Maryland 276

Known as the Jacob Tome Memorial Highway, Maryland 276 links the towns of Port Deposit and Rising Sun in northwestern Cecil County. Parts of the roadway overlap with the Maryland 222 Truck bypass of Port Deposit between U.S. 1 and Maryland 275. The roadway otherwise rolls across the slow rolling piedmont of the Appalachian Mountains between the Susquehanna River and Conowingo Road.

Maryland 276 begins at the intersection of Maryland 222 (Main Street) and Rowland Drive as Center Street. The state highway rises out of the Susquehanna Valley to Woodlawn. A 3-digit Interstate 95 trailblazer faces Rowland Drive northbound and directs drivers onto Maryland 222 southbound for the Exit 93 interchange. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The narrow strip of land in which Port Deposit resides disallows for many cross streets in the town itself. The junction with Maryland 276 (Center Street) is the first such street that intersects Maryland 222 at a perpendicular angle. The state route begins here and travels northeast to junction Maryland 275 (Perrylawn Drive) and from there north to Rising Sun and U.S. 1 (Conowingo Road). Photos taken 03/28/04.

Maryland 276 ascends abruptly from Port Deposit 2.2 miles to junction Maryland 275 (Perrylawn Drive) via the Jacob Tome Memorial Highway. Rowland Drive spurs to the right to another set of modern homes and a marina. Photo taken 03/28/04.

Maryland 222 Truck northbound turns onto U.S. 1 (Conowingo Road) southbound to rejoin its parent at U.S. 222 in Conowingo itself. The truck route joined Maryland 276 back at its junction with Maryland 275 (Perrylawn Drive). Photo taken 07/25/04.
A one-piece fixture supports the U.S. 1 north and southbound shield assembly at the intersection with Conowingo and Slicers Mill Road. U.S. 1 northbound continues 3.1 miles to Sylmar and the Pennsylvania state line. 4.7 miles west is the end of Maryland 222 Truck and U.S. 222's southern terminus at Kilby Corner. A set of flashers governs the northern terminus intersection of Maryland 276 with U.S. 1 (Conowingo Road). Slicers Mill Road stems north from the junction into rural farm land. Maryland 276 overlaps with Maryland 222 Truck between U.S. 1 (Conowingo Road) and Maryland 275 (Perrylawn Drive). The truck alternate route provides the through route between Conowingo (U.S. 1 & 222) and Perryville (Interstate 95 & U.S. 40). Maryland 222 Truck northbound overlaps with U.S. 1 southbound 4.7 miles to Kilby Corner. Photo taken 07/25/04.
Curiously absent from the above depicted scene is the Maryland 276 southbound shield and accompanying Interstate 95 trailblazer. Perhaps the snow plows knocked the shield assembly down during the month of March 2004. Either way Maryland 276, 275, and 222 provide the preferred route to Interstate 95 (Exit 93) from U.S. 1 & 222.
