Maryland 286

Maryland 286 spurs east from Maryland 213 through South Chesapeake City to the Delaware state line via Bethel Road. The two-lane highway becomes Delaware 286 (Bethel Church Road) en route to Delaware 15 and U.S. 301 near Summit Bridge. The state of Delaware upgraded Bethel Church Road to Delaware 286 in 1993. The import is one of six from the Free State joining Maryland 54, 71, 299, 300, 404 as the other multi-state routes.

Southern Terminus Northern Terminus Road Names Mileage
Maryland 213 - South Chesapeake City Delaware state line (Bethel Church Road) George Street, 2nd Street, Bethel Road 2.09

Western Terminus - Maryland 213 (Chesapeake City Bridge)
Northbound on Maryland 213 (Augustine Herman Highway) as the highway prepares to cross the Chesapeake City Bridge. The high-level arch bridge crosses the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal between Maryland 286 (George Street) at S. Chesapeake City and Maryland 285 (Lock Street) at N. Chesapeake City Street. Maryland 286 begins here and travels George Street northeast to 2nd Street through the heart of town. Photo taken 08/10/04.
A closer look at the Maryland 286 shield posted for the George Street ramp from Maryland 213 north. Ramps to and from Maryland 213 southbound to Maryland 286 tie into Basil Avenue west of the bridge. Basil Avenue intersects George Street to the right adjacent to the Maryland 342 (St. Augustine Road) northern terminus. Photo taken 12/21/01.
Drivers taking Maryland 286 (George Street) westbound destined for Maryland 213 southbound must turn onto Basil Avenue south of St. Augustine Road (Maryland 342). From there Basil Avenue travels underneath the Maryland 213 steel arch bridge and turns southward parallel to the southbound lane of former U.S. highway. Basil Avenue then sees ramps with the southbound direction of Maryland 213. Pictured here is an older Maryland 213 shield for the Basil Avenue southbound turn onto Maryland 213. Photo taken 01/15/00.
Eastern Terminus - Delaware State Line (Delaware 286)
Delaware 286 (Bethel Church Road) westbound at the Cecil County, Maryland line. Like most crossings between Delaware and Maryland, a pavement change and small Maryland welcome sign are present. Maryland 286 ends at Maryland 213 (Chesapeake City Bridge) 2.5 miles to the west. Photo taken 12/21/01.
The first eastbound reassurance shield of Delaware 286 resides just beyond the state line. Bethel Church Road follows a curvy alignment between here and Delaware 15 (Choptank Road). Notice the single family home subdivision representative of the growth along the highway to the left. Photo taken 12/21/01.
