A set of flashers govern the intersection of Maryland 16 (Greenwood Road), Maryland 404 (Bridgeville Denton Road / Shore Highway) and Back Road. Maryland 16 turns westward onto the Shore Highway for a 3.2-mile overlap with Maryland 404 through Andersontown. Maryland 313 (Fredericksburg Highway) joins the paired routes 0.9 miles to the west. Closer look at the Maryland 16 & 404 shield assembly at the merge of the two highways. Maryland 404 represents the main corridor between the Maryland and Delaware coastal resort areas and the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan area. The rural route is often plagued with heavy traffic on the weekends and therefore a headlight requirement is in place throughout the two-lane stretch in eastern Caroline County. Proposals are underway to bring much of the road in Maryland up to expressway standards. Photo taken 04/13/04.

Maryland 27
Maryland 27, which originates at Interstate 270 Exit 16 and heads north via Ridge Road through northwestern Montgomery County before entering Frederick County and meeting Interstate 70 in Mount Airy. It intersects Interstate 70 and U.S. 40 at Exit 68 at a high speed interchange befitting a connection from a divided highway to an Interstate highway. This photo shows that intersection as seen from northbound Maryland 27 at Interstate 70/U.S. 40. From this interchange, Maryland 27 continues northeast as a rural highway to Westminster (Junction Maryland 140) and ultimately Manchester (Junction Maryland 30). Photo taken 06/01/03.

Maryland 99

Maryland 158
Maryland 158 (Bethlehem Boulevard) eastbound at the southern terminus of Maryland 157 (Peninsula Expressway) adjacent to the Exit 43 interchange of the Baltimore Beltway. Maryland 158 comprises 2.35 miles between the entrance to the Bethlehem Steel Plant and Maryland 151 (North Point Boulevard) at Edgemere. Maryland 157 meanwhile stems northwest 4.79 miles via the four-lane Peninsula Expressway and Merritt Boulevard to junction Interstate 695 & Maryland 151 at Exit 39. Despite the name and some 1980s road maps displaying it as a freeway, the Peninsula Expressway is nothing more than a draw bridge over the Bear Creek and the approaches associated with it. Maryland 228
Maryland 228 (Berry Road) begins at the intersection of Maryland 5 Business (Leonardtown Road) and U.S. 301 (Robert Crain Highway) in Waldorf. From there the four-lane divided highway ventures west to intersect Western Parkway and Hamilton Road. The first reassurance shield resides just after that signalized intersection. Maryland 231 crosses a narrow two-lane drawbridge between Calvert County and Benedict six miles west of Prince Frederick. A power plant lines the western banks of the Patuxent River at Maxwell Hall Park to the northwest. The draw span carried a 50 cent toll for drivers until December of 1954.1 Photos taken 09/25/04.

Maryland 231 (Prince Frederick Road) enters the village of Hughesville at junction Maryland 5 (Leonardstown Road). Maryland 5 represents a busy north-south corridor between U.S. 301 at Mattawoman and Lexington Park in southern St. Marys County (via Maryland 235). Maryland 231 continues west three miles via Burnt Store Road to its conclusion at Burnt Store. Maryland 5 splits with Maryland 5 Business outside of Waldorf eight miles to the northwest. Maryland 300 constitutes a multi-state route between Church Hill in Queen Annes County and Smyrna in the state of Delaware. The east-west route serves the communities of Dudley Corners, Sudlersville, Peters Corners, Kenton, Delaware, and Clayton, Delaware along its journey. Maryland 307 comprises a 6.5-mile route between Hurlock, Williamsburg, and Federalsburg in southeastern Maryland. Maryland 311

Just 300 yards north of its beginning, Maryland 311 (Main Street) intersects Maryland 287 (Sandy Island Road / Sandtown Road) in Goldsboro. Maryland 287 ends at short distance to the west at junction Maryland 313 (Oldtown Road / Goldsboro Road). Maryland 315
Maryland 315 constitutes a 3.2 mile loop through the Caroline County town of Federalsburg in southeast Maryland. The state highway begins as Federalsburg Preston Road and from there Bloomingdale Avenue and Main Street before entering downtown. Here the state highway turns left onto Central Avenue eastbound.
