U.S. 1 South
Two views of the Maryland state line entrance of U.S. 1 (Kennett Oxford Bypass) into Cecil County. The four-lane expressway downgrades into two-lane Conowingo Road at the settlement of Sylmar. A pavement change and welcome to Maryland sign usher in the state line as U.S. 1 travels southwest toward Rising Sun and Conowingo Dam. First photo taken by Adam Froehlig (03/02/04); second photo taken by JP Nasiatka (08/29/03).
Junction Maryland 276 shield posted ahead of the U.S. 1 (Conowingo Road) southbound intersection with Jacob Tome Memorial Highway and Slicers Mill Road. Maryland 276 begins here and travels west of Rising Sun en route to Colora and Port Deposit. Photo taken 07/25/04.
Maryland 276 overlaps with Maryland 222 Truck between U.S. 1 (Conowingo Road) and Maryland 275 (Perrylawn Drive). The truck alternate route provides the through route between Conowingo (U.S. 1 & 222) and Perryville (Interstate 95 & U.S. 40). Maryland 222 Truck northbound overlaps with U.S. 1 southbound 4.7 miles to Kilby Corner. Photo taken 07/25/04.
Curiously absent from the above depicted scene is the Maryland 276 southbound shield and accompanying Interstate 95 trailblazer. Perhaps the snow plows knocked the shield assembly down during the month of March 2004. Either way Maryland 276, 275, and 222 provide the preferred route to Interstate 95 (Exit 93) from U.S. 1 & 222. Three-quarters of a mile west of Maryland 276's north end is the west end of Maryland 273 (Rising Sun Road). The state route composes a direct route between U.S. 1 and Conowingo with Fair Hill and Newark, Delaware. The westernmost reaches of Rising Sun Road splits between a northbound leg to U.S. 1 ahead from the eastbound only partition from U.S. 1 north. Photo taken 07/25/04.
Maryland 273 westbound intersects U.S. 1. Drivers can turn east onto Maryland 273 (Rising Sun Road) to travel back to Rising Sun itself or Maryland 276 & 222 Truck. Otherwise U.S. 1 southbound continues westward beyond the route's end. Note the eastbound beginning in the background. Photo taken 07/25/04.
The beginning of Maryland 591 (Porters Bridge Road) as it splits from U.S. 1 at Richards Oak. The segmented state route follows the original U.S. 1 alignment south of Conowingo Road to the former Octoraro Creek crossing. Photo taken 07/25/04.
U.S. 1 crosses the Octoraro Creek and then descends to the south end of the Maryland 591 (Porters Bridge Road) and Connelly Road. A Maryland 222 Truck trailblazer directs motorists westward to U.S. 222. To the left is the 0.3-mile western leg of Porters Bridge Road. Photo taken 07/25/04.
1.6 miles west of Maryland 591 (Porters Bridge Road) is the southern terminus of U.S. 222 (Rock Springs Road). The junction Maryland 222 shield is erroneous as it should display a federal route shield. The upcoming traffic signal ties into Rowlandsville Road from the south. Photo taken 07/25/04.
The federal highway saw truncation to Kilbys Corner in 1995 following the dedesignation of itself south of U.S. 1 as Maryland 222. U.S. 222 still connects Conowingo with Lancaster, Pennsylvania to the north. Maryland 222 begins one mile to the south via Susquehanna River Road on the eastern shore of the Susquehanna River. Photo taken 07/25/04.
Southbound U.S. 1 (Conowingo Road) at its junction with Maryland 222 (Susquehanna River Road) south. A significant descent occurs between U.S. 222 and the river for U.S. 1 southbound drivers. Truck climbing lanes exist on either side of the dam for the ascent out of the valley. Susquehanna River Road consists of a 4.5-miles scenic drive between Conowingo and Port Deposit. Photos taken 06/17/00 & 08/11/05.
A set of flashers govern the movements between U.S. 1 (Conowingo Road) and Maryland 222 (Susquehanna River Road) at the east end of the dam. Maryland 222 southward to Port Deposit and eastward to Mt. Ararat Farm Road/Frenchtown Road is a part of the Susquehanna River Scenic Drive. The Scenic Drive includes U.S. 1 across Conowingo Dam to Maryland 623 and 161. Photo taken 08/11/05.
