U.S. Highway 33 & U.S. Highway 250 - Virginia

U.S. 33 and U.S. 250 follow Broad Street through downtown Richmond before transitioning into Virginia 33 east of Interstate 95, U.S. 60, and U.S. 360.

Perspective from U.S. 250 West
The signage from northbound Interstate 95 indicates that Broad Street is both U.S. 33 and U.S. 250; however, this particular stretch is only designated as U.S. 250 at this point. However, there is access to Virginia 33 via 18th Street north (U.S. 360 east). Meanwhile, the ramp here leads from westbound Broad Street to northbound Interstate 95 and Interstate 64. Photo taken 06/02/03.
This view of downtown Richmond is afforded from westbound Broad Street (U.S. 250) as it approaches Interstate 95, with the railroad overpass partially blocking the view. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Westbound U.S. 250 approaches a junction with Virginia Secondary 617, which heads north to meet Interstate 64 at Exit 167 and then continues northeast to Rockville and Montpelier. Photo taken 06/02/04.
Perspective from U.S. 33-250 East
After uniting at the intersection of Broad Street and Staples Mill Road, U.S. 33-250 enter the city of Richmond. At that point, the city takes over maintenance of the roads and signs. Occasionally, cut out U.S. shields may be found on these locally maintained segments, including this set of shields found as Broad Street enters Richmond. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Eastbound U.S. 33-250 approaches Junction Virginia 197. Photo taken 06/02/03.
One of the features of Richmond city signage is that the U.S. shields tend to be a bit smaller than normal and have varying fonts. All two-digit and three-digit U.S. routes are the same size, and the shields are placed on one continuous sign panel. This picture shows eastbound U.S. 33-250/Broad Street at Junction Virginia 197. Photo taken 06/02/03.

Interstate 195 itself is not visible from Broad Street because it runs below grade through this part of Richmond. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Still continuing southeast on Broad Street, U.S. 33-250 meet Interstate 195, the Downtown Expressway, which heads south to meet Virginia 76/Powhite Parkway and Virginia 195/Downtown Expressway (toll). Northbound Interstate 195 connects to both Interstates 64 and 95. Photo taken 06/02/03.
U.S. 33 and U.S. 250 next meet north Virginia 161, the junction for which is counterintuitively located before the junction with south Virginia 161. Normally when headed east, the first turn would be right (i.e., south) and the second turn would be left (i.e., north). However, in this case, northbound is first. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Virginia 161 follows Sheppard Street north from Broad Street. Note the use of the erroneous U.S. 161 shield here. Photo taken 06/02/03.
A block later, U.S. 33-250 meet southbound Virginia 161. Virginia 161 south crosses the James River, becoming Belt Boulevard and Bells Road en route to Interstate 95 Exit 69. This is the last state route intersection before U.S. 33 downgrades to Virginia 33 and separates from U.S. 250 (and this specific intersection, at Broad and Hancock, is not photographed yet!). Photo taken 06/02/03.
Perspective from U.S. 250 East
Eastbound U.S. 250 parallels Interstate 64 from Staunton west to Richmond, generally acting as a rural access to towns and communities along the freeway route. In this picture, U.S. 250 approaches Virginia 208/Courthouse Road east to Interstate 64 and Louisa and Virginia Secondary 659/Kents Store Road south to Kents Store in Fluvanna County. Photo taken 06/06/04.
A flashing beacon warns through traffic of this intersection, as traffic on Virginia 208 and Virginia Secondary 659 come to a stop at U.S. 250. Note the use of an Interstate 64 trailblazer shield that features the state name. Interstate 64 is only a mile or so northeast of this intersection via Virginia 208. Photos taken 06/06/04.
Now in Richmond and south of Hancock Street, where U.S. 250 becomes free of U.S. 33, U.S. 250 meets U.S. 1-301 five blocks southeast of the point where U.S. 33 converted into Virginia 33. U.S. 1-301 follow Adams Street through downtown, connecting to Chamberlayne Avenue north of Interstate 64-95. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Passing through downtown, U.S. 150/Broad Street east reach this valley, where U.S. 250 intersects with the below-grade Interstate 95. U.S. 250 continues a bit further east of here, ending at U.S. 60/21st Street. Photo taken 06/02/03.
