Scenic U.S. 40 branches off Interstate 68 and U.S. 40 in the panhandle of Maryland. These photos show the fall beauty of the hills through which Scenic U.S. 40 traverses. This may be the only instance in the country of a "Scenic" alternate to a U.S. highway. Note the trailblazer sign for Interstate 68 posted in the second picture. Photos taken 10/12/01.
Now several miles east of Scenic U.S. 40, eastbound U.S. 40 passes through the city of Hagerstown and approaches Junction Interstate 70/Exit 32 east of Hagerstown. U.S. 40 is a multi-lane, divided highway at this point. Photo taken 10/12/01.

This interchange marks the northern terminus of U.S. 340, and U.S. 15 exits off of its own freeway at this point, leaving U.S. 40 to carry the freeway alone from this point southeast to the beginning of Interstate 270 at the next interchange: Junction Interstate 70. Hilton Parkway carries U.S. 1 Truck & U.S. 40 Truck north between U.S. 40 and North Avenue. An old button copy overhead directs eastbound motorists onto the northbound parkway through Gwynns Falls Park from Edmondson Avenue. U.S. 40 continues east along Edmondson Avenue to the one-way couplet split of Mulberry Street (east) and Franklin Street (west). Shortly after the split, U.S. 40 reaches the former Interstate 170 freeway. There U.S. 40 eastbound departs Franklin Street for the Interstate 170 freeway between Pulaski Street and Greene Street. See Maryland @ AARoads - Terminated Interstate 170 (U.S. Highway 40) for photos of the depressed freeway. Photo taken 08/27/05.
U.S. 40 travels through central Baltimore via the one-way street couplet of Franklin & Mulberry Streets, the former Interstate 170 freeway, and Orleans Streets. The federal highway emerges from Orleans Street via the Pulaski Highway in east Baltimore. The Pulaski Highway carries U.S. 40 all the way to State Road, Delaware and junction U.S. 13. At the Orangeville section of east Baltimore, U.S. 40 Truck returns to U.S. 40 via Maryland 151 (Erdman Avenue) eastbound. Continuing eastward on the Pulaski Highway between Maryland 7 Segment "C" (Old Philadelphia Road) and Red Toad Road. The next couple of miles of U.S. 40 feature scenic rolling hills and next to no development. Photo taken 07/25/04.
In an effort to slow down traffic along U.S. 40, the Maryland State Highway Administration installed several new traffic lights along the Pulaski Highway in Cecil County during early 2004. Two of these signals now govern the intersections with Red Toad Road (far in the distance) and Mechanics Valley Road. The speed limit otherwise is posted at 55 MPH. Photo taken 07/25/04.

Within one-quarter mile of the state line is the southern terminus of Maryland 781 (Delancy Road) on U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway) eastbound. Delancy Road connects U.S. 40 with Maryland 281 (Red Hill Road) to the east of Elkton. Maryland 281 becomes Old Baltimore Pike upon entering New Castle County, Delaware. Thus motorists driving to/from Delaware often use Maryland 781 to make the leap from Maryland 281 / Old Baltimore Pike onto the Pulaski Highway. Photo taken 03/23/04.
