U.S. 50 Westbound
U.S. 50 (Ocean Gateway) westbound at the north end of Maryland 662 (Wye Mills Road) outside of Wye Mills in southern Queen Annes County. Maryland 662 represents the original alignment of U.S. 50 between Wye Mills and Easton to the south. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Continuing westbound on U.S. 50 after the north end of Maryland 662 (Wye Mills Road). U.S. 50 (Ocean Gateway) travels five miles to its merge with U.S. 301 (Blue Star Memorial Highway) at Queenstown. Photo taken 09/25/04.
U.S. 50 westbound near the intersections with Carmichael and Bloomingdale Roads midway between Wye Mills and Queenstown. Carmichael Road stems southward to Carmichael and Wye Island. Bloomingdale Road ventures northeast to U.S. 301 near its junction with Maryland 213 (Centreville Road). Photo taken 09/25/04.
0.25-mile guide sign for the junction with Maryland 456 (Friels Road). Maryland 456 travels just 1.22 miles between U.S. 50 and Maryland 18 (Old Stevensville Queenstown Road) at Queenstown. The state route provides a connection to U.S. 301 via Del Rhodes Avenue. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The split of Maryland 456 (Del Rhodes Avenue) westbound from U.S. 50 (Ocean Gateway). Maryland 456 splits with Del Rhodes Avenue for Friels Road just south of U.S. 301. Del Rhodes Avenue meets Maryland 18 (Main Street) near Maryland Avenue in the heart of Queenstown. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The last intersection U.S. 50 (Ocean Gateway) encounters before its merge onto U.S. 301 occurs just southwest of Queenstown with Maryland 18 (Old Stevensville Queenstown Road). Maryland 18 comprises two segments for a total of 20.47 miles between Centreville and Love Point on Chesapeake Bay. Photo taken 09/25/04.
U.S. 50 westbound at Maryland 18 (Old Stevensville Queenstown Road). Maryland 18 travels southwest from Queenstown via Main Street onto Old Stevensville Queenstown Road. The state highway parallels the U.S. 50 & 301 freeway west to Grasonville, Chester, and Stevensville. Photo taken 09/25/04.

U.S. 50 joins U.S. 301 via a partial "Y" interchange west of Queenstown. A two-lane concrete bridge carries U.S. 50 westbound motorists over U.S. 301 ahead of the Exit 45B interchange with Nesbit Road. Photo taken 09/25/04.
U.S. 50 & 301 merge together as a six-lane freeway from Queenstown west to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Several interchanges line the islands of western Queen Annes County on the nine mile drive to the Bay Bridge. The first off-ramp serves Nesbit Road at Exit 45B. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Westbound at the modified-diamond interchange with Nesbit Road. A short off-ramp joins with the adjacent Winchester Creek Road ahead of its intersection with Nesbit Road. Winchester Road follows the frontage of U.S. 50 & 301 from Blackbeard Road west to VFW Avenue. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Traffic from U.S. 301 southbound that missed the turn onto Maryland 18 south for U.S. 50 east is directed to U-turn at Exit 45B. Drivers should turn west onto Winchester Road, south onto Nesbit Road, and back east onto the U.S. 50 & 301 freeway. Use Nesbit Road south to Maryland 18 (Old Stevensville Queenstown Road) east for Bennett Point Road south to Bryantown. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Drivers merging onto U.S. 50 & 301 west from Exit 45B form the exit only lane for Exit 45A to Hissey Road. A short off-ramp departs ahead into the intersection of Winchester and Hissey Roads. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Westbound at the right-hand turn for Exit 45A and Hissey Road. Hissey Road stems north from Winchester Creek and Hissey Roads to the Chester River front. Winchester Creek Road continues west from Hissey Road to Exit 44B. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Again merging traffic composes the exit-only lane for the following exit. Exit 44B serves adjacent Winchester Creek Road and nearby Winchester Avenue. Photo taken 09/25/04.

Exit 41 loops onto Piney Narrows Road eastbound. Pine Narrows Road and Maryland 18 (Main Street) are joined by an under crossing near the Kent Narrows. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Traffic interests to Baltimore-Washington International Airport are advised to remain on U.S. 50 west to Interstate 97 north. Interstate 97 travels north from U.S. 50 & 301 to Baltimore from Exit 20. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Piney Creek Road forms a westbound side frontage road near the community of Chester on Kent Island. The nearby road ventures west from Exit 40A to Main Street near Castle Marina Road. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Exit 39B also joins U.S. 50 & 301 with Piney Creek Road via Chester Station Lane. Traffic interests to Cox Neck Road, Maryland 552 (Dominion Road), and Chester in general should use either Exit 39B or 39A. Maryland 552 comprises a 2.20 mile spur from Maryland 18 (Main Street) south to Dominion at Little Creek Road. Photo taken 09/25/04.
U.S. 50 west & U.S. 301 south at the sharp off-ramp onto Chester Station Lane north. Piney Creek Road meets Main Street just west of Chester Station Lane. Traffic bound for Chester should use Main Street east to Postal Road. Photo taken 09/25/04.

Upcoming exits sign featuring the final three Kent Island interchanges: Duke Street (Exit 38A), Maryland 8 (Exit 37), and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge approach. Traffic merges onto U.S. 50 west & U.S. 301 south from Shopping Center Road to the right. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Westbound at the Exit 38A turn-off onto Duke Street northbound in Stevensville. Duke Street links the freeway with Maryland 18 (Main Street) and Island Drive. Use Maryland 18 west from Duke Street for Love Point Road and State Street. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Exit 37 represents the final departure point for U.S. 50 & 301 travelers before the freeway ascends onto the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Maryland 8 (Romancoke Road / Business Parkway) interchanges with U.S. 50 & 301 near the Bay Bridge Airport in Stevensville. The north-south route journeys 8.37 miles south from Maryland 18 (Main Street) to Romancoke. Photo taken 09/25/04.
U.S. 50 west & U.S. 301 south at the Exit 37 diamond interchange with Maryland 8. Maryland 8 follows Romancoke Road south two miles to Metapeake, three miles to Norman, and six miles to Mattapex. Business Parkway carries the state highway north to its end at junction Maryland 18 (Main Street). Maryland 18 turns north from Maryland 8 (Love Point Road) four miles to its end at Love Point. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Motorists from Maryland 8 (Romancoke Road / Business Parkway) merge onto U.S. 50 west & U.S. 301 south at the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge proclamation sign. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Depending on traffic conditions, the Maryland Transportation Authority can adjust the two spans of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge so that the westbound three lane bridge carries two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane to compensate for traffic demands associated with beach bound traffic and other periods of congestion. The eastbound span only carries two lanes overall. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Motorists needing assistance to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge can seek an escort by pulling over in the designated area and letting the Maryland Transportation Authority know of their needs. A similar service is available for crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge as well. Photo taken 09/25/04.
These U.S. 50-301 shields greet westbound traffic as the freeway now prepares to cross over the Chesapeake Bay. A travelers advisory overhead lies in the distance. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The 4.3-mile long Chesapeake Bay Bridge (William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge) is not tolled in the westbound direction. Operated by the Maryland Transportation Authority, the westbound direction crosses the 1973 span, which was constructed with three lanes rather than two lanes. On certain occasions, traffic from eastbound is routed onto this span in order to account for weekend travel and emergency conditions. A crossover visible at the westbound entrance to the bridge accommodates the two-way traffic flow for the three-lane westbound span. Photos taken 09/25/04.
Now back on terra firma, the U.S. 50-301 freeway will pass by the eastbound toll plaza and approach Exit 32, East College Parkway and Whitehall Road. Photo taken 09/25/04.
View of the toll plaza for the Bay Bridge as seen along westbound. Note the change in lane markings to reflect the end of the five-lane configuration and the resumption of the six-lane freeway configuration. U.S. 50-301 assume Interstate standards from here until the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (Route 295). Photo taken 09/25/04.

Use Exit 29 to reach Busch's Front Road, Whitehall Road, and College Parkway. Photo taken 09/25/04.
West U.S. 50 and southbound U.S. 301 reach Exit 29, Junction Maryland 179/St. Margarets Road southwest to Cape St. Claire Road. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The next exit along westbound is Exit 28, Bay Dale Drive, one mile. Bay Dale Drive carries travelers north to College Parkway for the communities of Bayberry, Belvedere Heights, and Mago Vista Beach. Photo taken 09/25/04.
This mileage sign provides the distance to the exits for two highways that head north to Baltimore: Maryland 2/Governor Ritchie Highway and Interstate 97. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The Exit 28 partial-cloverleaf interchange with Bay Dale Drive serves traffic interests onto the nearby Old Mill Bottom Road. Old Mill Bottom Road exists in two segments near the U.S. 50 & 301 freeway. The northern segment travels east-west between Shot Town and Bretton View Roads. The southern segment links Fergusen Road with Maryland 179 at St. Margarets. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Bay Dale Drive travels north-south between Fergusen Road and College Parkway. Fergusen Road joins U.S. 50 & 301 with Maryland 179 (St. Margarets Road) via Old Mill Bottom Road. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Westbound at the ramp departure of Exit 28 for Bay Dale Drive. Maryland 179 comprises 3.16 miles of St. Margarets Road between Maryland 648 (Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard) and Exit 29 of U.S. 50 & 301. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The next exit along westbound is Exit 27B, Junction Maryland 2/Ritchie Highway north, followed by Exit 27A, Maryland 450 south to the U.S. Naval Academy. Photo taken 09/25/04.
This unusual trailblazer sign (more suitable for an expressway rather than a freeway) indicates that Exit 27B/Maryland 2 north also connects to Maryland 648 (Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard). Several old sections of Maryland 2 are now designated Maryland 648. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Westbound U.S. 50 and Southbound U.S. 301 at Exit 27B, Junction Maryland 2/Ritchie Highway north to Maryland 648. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The second exit in this cloverleaf interchange is south Maryland 450 to the U.S. Naval Academy. Upon reaching the academy, Maryland 450 turns west to enter Annapolis. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The next exit along westbound is Exit 24, Junction Maryland 70 south and Interstate 595 (Hidden) west. Here, U.S. 50-301 cross the Severn River. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Maryland 70 heads south via Rowe Boulevard to the Maryland State House, while Interstate 595 becomes the hidden designation for U.S. 50-301 between Exit 24 and Exit 7, Junction Interstate 95-495/Capital Beltway. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Exit 24A onto Maryland 70 (Rowe Boulevard) southbound serves the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the Maryland State Capital, and the Annapolis Historic District and Visitors Center. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Westbound U.S. 50 and southbound U.S. 301 at Exit 24B, Bestgate Road. Exit 24A is Junction Maryland 70/Rowe Boulevard south into Annapolis. Photo taken 09/25/04.
West Interstate 595 begins as U.S. 50-301 reaches Exit 24, Junction Maryland 70 (Roscoe Rowe Boulevard) south. Maryland 70 is a short route traveling just 2.32 miles between U.S. 50 & 301 and Maryland 450 (College Avenue / West Street). Photo taken 09/25/04.
Maryland 2 shares pavement with the U.S. 50 & 301 freeway between Exits 27 and 23A. Although vastly unsigned, the overlap replaces the original Annapolis routing of Maryland 2 along Maryland 450. The state highway departs the freeway at Exit 23A near the Annapolis Mall at Loretta Heights. Exit 23A splits into ramps for Maryland 2 south and Jennifer Road at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Jennifer Road links Admiral Drive with Maryland 450 (West Street). Photo taken 09/25/04.
Westbound U.S. 50/Interstate 595 and southbound U.S. 301/Maryland 2 approach Exit 23A. Maryland 2 departs the freeway via Solomons Island Road south toward Calver County and Solomons Island, while Maryland 450 heads east along old U.S. 50 (local route) to Parole and Annapolis via West Street. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Maryland 2 splits from U.S. 50-301 and Interstate 595 at Exit 23A. Maryland 2 is a very long route that roughly parallels the west shore of the Chesapeake Bay between Baltimore and Solomons Island. Between Annapolis and Baltimore, Maryland 2 is a very busy road, but much of the through traffic has since been redirected onto Interstate 97 (which generally follows the old Maryland 3 corridor). Photo taken 09/25/04.
The next exit along westbound is Exit 23B, Junction Maryland 450 east to Maryland 178 north/Crownsville, one-half mile. Following Maryland 450 are Exit 21 for Interstate 97 north to Baltimore and Baltimore-Washington International Airport and Exit 22 for Maryland 665/Aris T. Allen Boulevard to Riva Road. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Maryland 450 follows the original route of U.S. 50 between the District of Columbia and Annapolis via Defense Highway between U.S. 50-301 and Maryland 3 (Anne Arundel-Prince George's County Line) and via Annapolis Road in Prince George's County. The other signage on this sign bridge addresses Interstate 97 (Exit 21), which heads northwest to meet Maryland 32 and Maryland 100 before its northern conclusion at Interstate 695/Baltimore Beltway. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Westbound U.S. 50 and southbound U.S. 301 reach Exit 23B, Maryland 450/Old U.S. 50 to Crownsville. The next exit is Junction Interstate 97 north to Baltimore. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Westbound U.S. 50 and southbound U.S. 301 reaches Exit 21, Junction Interstate 97 north to Baltimore. The next exit along westbound is Exit 22, Junction Maryland 665. The reason why Exit 21 occurs prior to Exit 22 is because traffic for Interstate 97 is separated onto collector distributor lanes until after passing Exit 22/Maryland 665. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The two right lanes become exit only for northbound Interstate 97. The main lanes for U.S. 50-301 (and secret Interstate 595) continue west toward Washington, D.C. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Once on the collector-distributor lanes for the transition from U.S. 50-301 west to Interstate 97 north, the lanes pass the Maryland 665 interchange. Afterward, the right lanes are signed for Interstate 97, while the left lane returns traffic back to U.S. 50-301 west. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The collector-distributor lane splits when the left lane ramps back to the U.S. 50-301 mainline, while Interstate 97 exits right. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Interstate 595 & U.S. 50 eastbound & U.S. 301 southbound travel five miles from the southern terminus of Interstate 97 to junction Maryland 424 (Davidsonville Road) at Exit 16. Davidsonville Road carries the state route north-south between Maryland 214 (Central Avenue) and Maryland 3 (Crain Highway) at Crofton. Photo taken 09/19/04.
One half mile east of the half-cloverleaf interchange with Maryland 424 (Davidsonville Road) on Interstate 595 & U.S. 50-301 west. Maryland 424 travels 8.24 miles between Davidsonville (Junction Maryland 214) and Crofton. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Westbound at the ramp departure of Exit 16 to Maryland 424 (Davidsonville Road). Use Maryland 424 south to Birdsboro Road as an alternate route to Maryland 2 (Solomons Island Road) south for Mt. Zion and Calvert County. Photos taken 09/25/04.

The hidden Interstate 595 designation draws to a close at the directional-cloverleaf interchange between U.S. 50 (John Hanson Highway) and Interstates 95 & 495 (Capital Beltway). The high-speed interchange between the two freeways serves the Washington, D.C. metro area destinations of College Park, Andrews AFB, and Landover. Exit 7B carries drivers onto Interstate 95 & 495 northbound for Baltimore and Rockville. Exit 7A comprises a flyover onto the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway for Oxon Hill, Alexandria, Springfield, and Richmond. U.S. 50 meanwhile continues west to Cheverly and Washington itself. Photo taken 09/19/04.
