Virginia 168 - Chesapeake Expressway

Virginia 168 North
First Virginia 168 Northbound shield after the transition from North Carolina 168 into Virginia. This shield is posted roughly at the beginning of the new divided four lane alignment of Virginia 168. The old alignment (Battlefield Boulevard) follows a two lane road to the left. Access to Battlefield Boulevard from new Virginia 168 exists between Ballahack Road one half mile to the north. Taken 12/17/01.
A traffic signal composes the south end of the Chesapeake Expressway toll highway of Virginia 168 at Gallbush Road & Battlefield Boulevard (Virginia 168 Business). Virginia 168 Business travels the old roadway northward into Great Bridge. Virginia 168 meanwhile enters the limited access highway here. Photo taken 12/17/01.
The toll plaza of the Chesapeake Expressway exists between Gallbush Road and Exit 5 (Battlefield Boulevard). All passenger vehicles are levied a $2.00 toll. Smart tag users however receive a discount. Photo taken 12/17/01.
Virginia 168 travels underneath Indian Creek Road near the Exit 5 Battlefield Boulevard interchange. Virginia Business 168 crosses from the southwest to northeast at the upcoming interchange. Photo taken 12/17/01.
Chesapeake Expressway northbound at the Exit 5 off-ramp to Battlefield Boulevard. Virginia 168 Business travels northward through the Hickory community from Exit 5. Located at Hickory is the south end of the Centerville Turnpike (former Virginia State Secondary 604). Centerville Turnpike offers an alternate route to Virginia Beach in conjunction with Virginia 165 (Mount Pleasant Road). Photo taken 12/17/01.
Hillcrest Parkway was constructed for the sole purpose of intersecting Virginia 168 at Exit 8. The east-west surface highway links Battlefield Boulevard and Johnstown Road with the Chesapeake Expressway via a five-ramp partial cloverleaf interchange with a southbound to eastbound loop ramp. Photo taken 12/17/01.
The original south end of the Great Bridge Bypass was just south of Hanbury Road, where the Great Bridge Bypass merged back into now-Business Virginia 168/Battlefield Boulevard. The Hanbury Road interchange (Exit 10) was built as part of the Chesapeake Expressway. Previously, there was no interchange...not even an overpass at that location.2 At this location Virginia 168 Business (Battlefield Boulevard) turns northwesterly toward Great Bridge center. Photo taken 12/17/01.

Virginia 168 (Great Bridge Bypass) northbound approaching Exits 13A/B with Battlefield Boulevard. Until 2000, the Great Bridge Bypass concluded at Virginia 168 Business with all traffic utilizing Battlefield Boulevard northbound to Interstate 64. The Oak Grove Connector segment of Virginia 168 relocated the highway from Battlefield Boulevard onto a new freeway between Exit 13 and Interstate 64 & 464. Photo taken 12/17/01.
The two mile guide sign for Interstate 64 & 464 (Exit 15) is posted at the Virginia 190 (Kempsville Road) undercrossing. Out of view to the right was an abandoned off-ramp to Virginia 190 from Virginia 168 northbound. Photo taken 12/17/01.
The Exit 13 interchange provides for a full cloverleaf between Virginia 168 and Battlefield Boulevard. Virginia 168 Business is heavily traveled with several signalized intersections in both directions of the exit. The old Virginia 168 merges with new Virginia 168 at Interstate 64 Exit 290. Photo taken 12/17/01.
Continuing northbound on the 2000 opened Oak Grove Connector. Displayed in the photograph is the one-half mile sign bridge for Exit 15A (Interstate 64 Outer & Virginia 168 north). Virginia 168 merges onto Interstate 64 Outer for a brief overlap to Exit 290. The mainline of Virginia 168 becomes Interstate 464 northbound in one mile. Photo taken 12/17/01.
Coinciding with construction of the Oak Grove Connector is a redesign of the Interstate 464 & U.S. 17 (former Virginia 104) interchange with Interstate 64. U.S. 17 (former Virginia 104) now merges onto Virginia 168 just before the Interstate 64 cloverleaf interchange. Traffic to Interstate 64 Outer and Virginia 168 north (Exit 15A) departs before U.S. 17 merges. However traffic from U.S. 17 north to Interstate 64 Outer merges with the Exit 15A ramp before the roadway enters the Interstate 64 Exit 291 collector/distributor roadway. Otherwise a loop ramp departs in 0.25 miles for U.S. 17 (Dominion Boulevard) southbound as the final Virginia 168 off-ramp. U.S. 17 replaced Virginia 104 along Dominion Boulevard in Winter of 2002. Photo taken 12/17/01.
Virginia 168 (Tidewater Drive) northbound at the Little Creek Road (Virginia 165 & 170) interchange in the city of Norfolk. Virginia 168 follows a suppressed roadway from Little Creek Road northward to U.S. 60 (Ocean View Avenue). Opened in the mid-1950s1, the four mile Virginia 168 Tidewater Drive sees an diamond interchange with U.S. 460 (Granby Street) and limited access from Granby Street to Ocean View Avenue. Photo taken 04/13/01.
