Interstate 83 Business Loop / George Street

Business Loop Interstate 83 serves downtown York via George Street in York County. The alignment follows most of old U.S. 111 through the city. Business Loop Interstate 83 is the only such Business Route within Pennsylvania of an Interstate highway. Additionally the Business Route is one of only a handful ever signed within the Northeastern U.S. The others are Business Loop Interstate 89 in Lebanon, New Hampshire and Business Spur Interstate 495 at Lowell, Massachusetts. Maryland also features Interstate 270 Spur and Interstate 895 Spur, but those routes are freeways and not business routes persay.

Business Loop Interstate 83 follows a four-lane expressway spur from Exit 15 of Interstate 83 northward. The alignment dumps traffic onto South George Street at the York city line. From there Business Loop Interstate 83 is well signed throughout George Street route between Exits 15 and U.S. 30 (Arsenal Road).

The alignment of Business Loop Interstate 83 follows George Street through downtown York. This was not always the case as George Street was a one-way affair in the southbound direction at one point. At that time Business Loop Interstate 83 northbound followed Jackson Street east to Duke Street northbound to Philadelphia Street (Pennsylvania 462) westbound. Once George Street was made into a two-way street, Business Loop Interstate 83 northbound relocated wholey onto it with southbound through downtown.
