Exit 49 departs quickly underneath the Sword Avenue overpass for U.S. 5 (Enfield Street). U.S. 5 travels Longmeadow Street south from Longmeadow, Massachusetts into Enfield from the northeast. The final Enfield interchange involves the second meeting of U.S. 5 (King Street) with Interstate 91 at Exit 46. U.S. 5 continues southward along the eastern side of the Connecticut River through East Windsor, South Windsor, and East Hartford. A modified folded-diamond interchange joins the freeway with Connecticut 159 (Main Street) and Lawnacre Road along the west banks of the Connecticut River. Exit 42 loops onto Connecticut 159 (Main Street) near its intersections with Connecticut 140 (Elm Street) and Lawnacre Road. Ahead is the Exits 41 & 39 off-ramp for Center Street. Lawnacre Road parallels Interstate 91 between Connecticut 159 and Center Street along the northbound side of the freeway. Northbound traffic sees a Exit 41 & 39 off-ramp to Kennedy and Archer Roads to the southwest of Exit 40 (Connecticut 20). Connecticut 20 travels 31.56 miles west from Interstate 91 to Connecticut 8 at Winchester. The last Windsor interchange joins Interstate 91 with Connecticut 218 (Putnam Highway) and Interstate 291 at Exits 35B/A. Connecticut 218 stems west from Connecticut 159 (Windsor Avenue) along Interstate 291 to Interstate 91 and Blue Hills and south Bloomfield. Connecticut 218 consists of 7.00 miles of pavement between Windsor and U.S. 44 (Albany Avenue) in West Hartford. The alignment roughly parallels the unconstructed path of Interstate 291. Interstate 291 was a planned 270-degree beltway around Hartford between Interstate 84 at Manchester and Interstate 91 at Rocky Hill. The freeway was never built west of Interstate 91. Trumbell Street begins there and heads west two blocks to junction U.S. 44 (Main Street) where it turns southward into downtown.
