I-95 Northbound - Downtown Providence to Massachusetts

Interstate 95 north
U.S. 6 westbound merges onto Interstate 95 northbound after the Interstate 195 western terminus (Exit 20). From there the tandem travel along a depressed freeway along the western edge of downtown Providence. U.S. 1 parallels the freeway along frontage streets. Exit 21 leaves Interstate 95 north & U.S. 6 west at the Westminster Street overpass. U.S. 1 turns onto Broadway from the frontage street system to Sabin & Fountain Streets through downtown Providence. U.S. 6 westbound departs Interstate 95 northbound for the Rhode Island 10 freeway at Exit 22. A directional interchange facilitates the movements of the Exit 22 complex for U.S. 6 west & Rhode Island 10 west to Johnston and Cranston, Memorial Boulevard east to junction U.S. 1 and downtown, and Dean Street north to Pleasant Valley Parkway. Interstate 95 elevates to span the Providence River north of the U.S. 6 & Rhode Island 10 interchange. Providence Place Mall comes into view along the eastern frontage of the freeway. Exit 23 serves two movements from Interstate 95 northbound: Rhode Island 146 north to Lincoln, Woonsocket and Worcester, Massachusetts, and State Street south to Rhode Island 7 (Orms Street), U.S. 44 (Smith Street), U.S. 1 (Gaspee Street), and the state capital complex. Photo taken 06/26/05.
A partial "Y" interchange provides the northbound split of Interstate 95 and Rhode Island 146 at Exit 23. Rhode Island 146 comprises a full freeway northward from Providence to the Massachusetts state line near Woonsocket. The freeway provides a direct route to Worcester, Massachusetts. A loop ramp splits beyond the Exit 23 gore point for State Street south at Rhode Island 7 (Orms Street). State Street meets U.s. 1 & 44 (Smith and Gaspee Streets) at the state offices. U.S. 44 follows Smith Street northwest to Centredale and Greenville in the Providence suburbs. Rhode Island 7 (Orms Street) passes over Interstate 95 at the Exit 23 ramp departure. Rhode Island 7 turns northwest onto Douglas Avenue at the over crossing en route to North Providence and Smitfhield. Attached to the Industrial Drive over crossing is the 0.75-mile overhead for Exits 25A/B (Rhode Island 126 to U.S. 1). Rhode Island 126 departs its end at U.S. 1 (North Main Street) in north Providence west along Smithfield Avenue to west Pawtucket and Saylesville. The Branch Avenue off-ramp departs ahead at Exit 24. Interstate 95 sees a partial-cloverleaf interchange with Branch Avenue at Exit 24 northeast of the split with Rhode Island 146. The Branch Avenue northbound on-ramp forms a collector/distributor roadway for Exits 25A/B with Rhode Island 126 (Smithfield Avenue). Exit 25A serves U.S. 1 (North Main Street) via Cemetery Street east to Frost Street independent of Smithfield Avenue. U.S. 1 remains to the east of Interstate 95 through to Exit 27. Interstate 95 enters the city of Pawtucket just north of Exit 25. Intersecting the freeway ahead is Rhode Island 122 (Lonsdale Avenue) at Exit 26. Rhode Island 122 branches northward from U.S. 1 (North Main Street) via Lonsdale Avenue through west Pawtucket to Lincoln and Lonsdale. Photo taken 06/26/05.
Interstate 95 gains a frontage street system through western reaches of central Pawtucket. Comstock Street travels eastward alongside the freeway to provide the connection between Lonsdale Avenue (Rhode Island 122) and Main Street. Quincy Avenue travels along Interstate 95 southbound between the same streets. Rhode Island 122 carries Main Street north from U.S. 1 (Pawtucket Avenue) to Lonsdale Avenue. Exit 27 consists of a split-diamond interchange with Garden Street south, Pine Street north, and George Street (U.S. 1 south) for downtown Pawtucket. The split diamond utilizes the frontage streets of Pearl & Marrin Streets (east) and Cedar Street (west) for the connections between Garden Street and U.S. 1 south. Photo taken 06/26/05.

Exit 27 departs Interstate 95 northbound at the Main Street over crossing. The ramp ascends to form Pearl Street eastbound at Garden Street. The Exit 27 on-ramp joins Interstate 95 ahead of the Pleasant and Taft Street overpasses near U.S. 1 south (George Street). U.S. 1 northbound merges onto Interstate 95 for a brief overlap to Exit 29 (Broadway). Trucks to the George Bennett Highway should remain on the freeway through to Exit 30 (East Street). Interstate 95 & U.S. 1 span the Seekonk River ahead of the Exit 28 ramp to Rhode Island 114 (School Street). Rhode Island 114 comprises a lengthy north-south route between Middletown and Woonsocket in eastern Rhode Island. Interstate 95 and U.S. 1 part ways at the Exit 29 off-ramps to Broadway and Cottage Street. U.S. 1 follows Broadway northeast through northern Pawtucket to Attleboro, Massachusetts. Fountain and Middle Streets join Interstate 95 as frontage roads from Broadway north to Roosevelt Avenue. The roads provide the movements of the Exit 30 diamond interchange for East Street. East Street in conjunction with Roosevelt Avenue south serves Central Falls to the west. East Street otherwise provides a truck route to U.S. 1 (Broadway) to the east. Photo taken 06/26/05.
Interstate 95 leaves Pawtucket, Rhode Island for Attleboro, Massachusetts north of the Roosevelt Avenue overpass. The freeway turns eastward to meet Massachusetts 1A (Newport Avenue) at the Exits 2A/B full-cloverleaf interchange. U.S. 1 (Washington Street) sees a partial interchange with Interstate 95 at Exit 1.
