Exit 48 joins Interstate 95 with U.S. 302 (Forest Avenue) and Maine 25 (Brighton Avenue / Larabee Road) via Riverside Street. Riverside Street acts as a connector between the two numbered highways, traveling north-south parallel to Interstate 95 (Maine Turnpike). Larabee Road extends west from the Exit 48 ramps at Riverside Street to junction Maine 25 Business (Main Street), where Maine 25 leaves Brighton Avenue for Larabee Road south. Exit 48 serves a multitude of area colleges including St. Joseph's College, the University of Southern Maine, and the University of New England Westbrook. Photo taken 06/28/05.
Southbound at the Exit 48 trumpet interchange with Riverside Street and Larabee Road south. U.S. 302 (Forest Avenue) travels underneath Interstate 95 from downtown Portland northwest to North Windham, serving the Bridgton Lakes region en route to New Hampshire. The Maine Turnpike authority construction the Exit 47 trumpet interchange in the late 1990s. Work coincided with the completion of the Rand Road/Westbrook Arterial connector between Larabee Road and Brighton Avenue of Maine 25.1 The alignment allows Maine 25 drivers to bypass the Brighton Avenue intersections of Larabee Road and Riverside Avenue between Portland and Westbrook. Photo taken 06/28/05.
Also constructed in the late 1990s is the Exit 46 folded-diamond interchange with Jetport Road. Jetport Road provides an east-west connector from Interstate 95 to Maine 22 (Congress Street), Maine 9 (Western Avenue), and Jetport Boulevard to Portland International Jetport (PWM). Photo taken 06/28/05.

Exit 45 provides the only access to Interstate 295 north from south Interstate 95 for interests to downtown Portland. Interstate 295 otherwise merges via a partial "Y" interchange ahead. Maine Mall lies nearby and is served by Maine Mall Road, a north-south roadway linking the mall area with Maine 114 (Gorham Road) to the south and Maine 9 (Western Avenue) to the north. Eastward, the Maine Turnpike approach road provides access to U.S. 1 & Maine 9 (Main Street) through South Portland in conjunction with the Scarborough Connector freeway. Photo taken 06/28/05.
Traffic merges onto Interstate 95 south from Interstate 295 south via Exit 44 (northbound only). Capacity increases from four to six overall lanes along the Maine Turnpike between Exit 44 and the New Hampshire state line. Otherwise southbound drivers approach the Exit 42 trumpet interchange with Haigais Parkway, a connector road leading east from Interstate 95 to Payne Road, U.S. 1 & Maine 9, and Lincoln Avenue near Scarborough. Photo taken 06/28/05.

Approaching Saco on Interstate 95 south, drivers bound for the Saco Hotel and Conference Center are advised to take Exit 36 (Interstate 195 east). The conference center sits on the site of the former Saco interchange toll plaza adjacent to Maine 112 (North Street). When Interstate 195 was completed, the trumpet interchange to its south became less relevant and early 2000s widening resulted in the closure of the southbound ramps to Maine 112. Space for the former toll plaza was later sold to build the Saco Hotel and Conference Center.2 Direct access to that facility is still available via the northbound exit ramps, but southbound drivers must use Interstate 195 east to Exit 1 (Industrial Park Road). Photo taken 06/28/05.
Flag Pond Road passes over Interstate 95 (Maine Turnpike) two miles north of Interstate 195 (Exit 36). Interstate 195 constitutes the Saco Industrial Spur, a 1.55-mile long freeway leading east to Old Orchard Beach and Maine 5 (Ocean Park Road). Photo taken 06/28/05.
Interstate 195 was built to serve industrial areas of north Saco. The freeway also provides the only access to downtown Saco from Interstate 95 since the ramps to Maine 112 (North Street) closed. Interchanges include those with Industrial Park Road and U.S. 1 (Main Street) at Maine 5 (Ocean Park Road). Industrial Park Road loops west from U.S. 1 to Maine 112 (North Street). Maine 112 joins Saco with Buxton to the north. Photo taken 06/28/05.
One half mile north of the Exit 36 trumpet interchange with Interstate 195 (Saco Industrial Spur). Interstate 195 merges with Maine 5 (Ocean Park Road) at its eastern terminus. Maine 5 follows Ocean Park Road to its intersection with Saco and Temple Avenues. Temple Avenue continues Ocean Park Road east to Maine 9 (Grand Avenue) at Ocean Park. Interstate 95's final Maine Turnpike main line toll plaza resides just north of the Exit 7 diamond interchange with Chases Pond Road. All passenger vehicles are levied a $1.75 toll. EZ Pass lanes are also available, but all motorists must slow to 10 mph through the lanes. Interstate 95 is a free facility between Exit 2 and the Portsmouth Circle in New Hampshire (Exit 5). Photos taken 06/28/05.
Exit 7 leaves Interstate 95 southbound almost immediately after drivers depart the final main line toll plaza. Chases Pond Road links Maine Turnpike with nearby U.S. 1 (Blue Star Memorial Highway) at York Village. U.S. 1A loops east from York Village to York Harbor and York Beach. Maine 91 travels northwest to South Berwick and Berwick. Traveling the Exit 2 c/d roadway to Maine 236 (Harold L. Dow Highway). U.S. 1 Bypass represents the original routing between the Maine and New Hampshire Turnpikes. U.S. 1 Bypass utilizes a two-lane lift bridge over the Piscataqua River into New Hampshire bypassed by the six-lane Interstate 95 bridge in 1972.3 The highway loops around downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Meadowbrook. U.S. 1 meanwhile spans the Piscataqua River from Kittery onto State Street in downtown Portsmouth. Photo taken 06/28/05.

Traveling southward along the Piscataqua Bridge. Interstate 95's last shield within Maine resides on the approach to the six-lane span. Work on the bridge commenced in May 1968 with an official opening on November 1, 1972 as the widest arch-span bridge within the Interstate highway system.4 Drivers enter New Hampshire at mid-span, but the state line sign was missing in Summer of 2005.
