Interstate 95 South
Interstate 95 continues south from the Falmouth Spur (unsigned Interstate 495) through the greater Portland area. The next four interchanges serve western reaches of Portland including South Portland and Westbrook. 06/28/05
Exit 48 joins Interstate 95 with U.S. 302 (Forest Avenue) and Maine 25 Business (Brighton Avenue / Main Street) via Riverside Street. Riverside Street acts as a connector between the two numbered routes, traveling north-south parallel to I-95 (Maine Turnpike). Larabee Road extends west from the Exit 48 ramps at Riverside Street to junction SR 25 Business (Main Street) and SR 25 (Westbrook Arterial). Exit 48 serves a multitude of area colleges including St. Joseph's College, the University of Southern Maine and the University of New England Westbrook. 06/28/05
Southbound I-95 at the trumpet interchange (Exit 48) with Riverside Street and Larabee Road south. U.S. 302 (Forest Avenue) travels underneath Interstate 95 from Downtown Portland northwest to North Windham, serving the Bridgton Lakes region en route to New Hampshire. Maine 25 travels west from Downtown via Brighton Avenue to Rand Road at Nasons Corner. Maine 25 Business follows Main Street through while Maine 25 takes Westbrook Arterial around east Westbrook. The state route continues west beyond Westbrook to Gorham and Standish. 06/28/05
Exit 47 joins Interstate 95 (Maine Turnpike) with Rand Road and the Westbrook Arterial east of Larabee Road. Maine 25 loops north along Rand Road to Brighton Avenue east into Portland. Westbrook Arterial continues the route west toward the Westbrook city center. 06/28/05
Interstate 95 passes over the Portland Terminal Railroad one half mile north of Exit 47 to Rand Road and Westbrook Arterial. Maine 25 continues west along the arterial to William L. Clarke Drive encircling Downtown Westbrook. Maine 25 Business follows Main Street one block north of William L. Clarke Drive. 06/28/05
The Maine Turnpike authority constructed the trumpet interchange at Exit 47 in the late 1990s. Work coincided with the completion of the Rand Road / Westbrook Arterial connector between Larabee Road and Brighton Avenue.1 The alignment shifts Maine 25 through traffic away from the Brighton Avenue retail corridor at Larabee Road and Riverside Street. 06/28/05
Also constructed in the late 1990s was the folded diamond interchange (Exit 46) with Skyway Drive. Skyway Drive provides an east-west connector from Interstate 95 to Maine 22 (Congress Street), Maine 9 (Johnson Road) and Jetport Boulevard to Portland International Jetport (PWM). 06/28/05
Southbound reassurance markers posted for I-95 and the Maine Turnpike ahead of the Stroudwater River. Stroudwater River flows east into the Fore River to the north of Portland International Jetport (PWM). 06/28/05
Maine 9 & 22 follow Congress Street west from Bradleys Corner in Portland to split at Johnson Road just east of Exit 46. Maine 9 is part of a longer state route stretching northward from Berwick and the New Hampshire state line to the New Brunswick line at Calais. Maine 22 meanwhile begins a western route from Portland (U.S. 1) to Maine 35 near Bonny Eagle within the town of Buxton. 06/28/05
SR 22 (Congress Street) and Skyway Drive pass over the Maine Turnpike as Exit 46 departs. Skyway Drive meets SR 22 (Congress Street) just west of Interstate 95, with SR 22 continuing from there nine miles to U.S. 202 & SR 4 at Buxton. SR 9 follows Western Avenue south from Maine Mall Road to South Portland and U.S. 1 (Main Street) at Thornton Heights. Interstate 95 meets SR 9 again at Exit 19. 06/28/05
Exit 45 comprises the west end of the Maine Turnpike freeway spur into South Portland. Destinations include The Maine Mall, Interstate 295 north, Broadway, and U.S. 1 & Maine 9 (Main Street). 06/28/05
Exit 45 provides the only access to Interstate 295 north from southbound Interstate 95 for interests to Downtown Portland. I-295 south otherwise ends at an adjacent wye interchange ahead. The Maine Mall lies nearby and is served by Maine Mall Road, a north-south roadway linking the retail area with Maine 114 (Gorham Road) to the south and Maine 9 (Western Avenue) to the north. Eastward, the Maine Turnpike approach road provides access to U.S. 1 & Maine 9 (Main Street) through South Portland in conjunction with the Scarborough Connector freeway. 06/28/05
Traffic merges onto Interstate 95 south from Interstate 295 south ahead at the SR 114 (Goreham Road) overpass. Capacity increases to six overall lanes along the Maine Turnpike southward to the New Hampshire state line. Otherwise southbound drivers approach the trumpet interchange (Exit 42) with Haigis Parkway, a connector road leading east from Interstate 95 to Payne Road, U.S. 1 & Maine 9, and Lincoln Avenue in the town of Scarborough. 06/28/05
South of I-295 and the Nonesuch River, Interstate 95 continues to within one half mile of Exit 42 (Haigis Parkway). Haigis Parkway intersects Payne Road nearby. Payne Road continues Maine Mall Road south from the South Portland city line to Maine 114 (Gorham Road), Scarborough Downs Road (to Scarborough Downs racetrack), and ultimately to U.S. 1 & Maine 9 at West Scarborough. 06/28/05
Southbound I-95 at the ramp departure (Exit 42) for U.S. 1 & Maine 9 and Scarborough. Haigis Parkway leads 1.4 miles south from Payne Road to U.S. 1 & Maine 9 at Lincoln Avenue. The pair head east a short distance to the Scarborough town center. 06/28/05
Two Rod Road spans Interstate 95 (Maine Turnpike) at this shield assembly. 07/08/12
Six lanes of the Maine Turnpike angle southwest toward the Dunstan River and Saco-Biddeford vicinity. Interstate 95 leaves Cumberland County for York County on this stretch. 06/28/05
Approaching Saco, drivers bound for the Saco Hotel and Conference Center are advised to take Exit 36 (Interstate 195 east). The conference center sits on the site of the former Saco interchange toll plaza adjacent to Maine 112 (North Street). When Interstate 195 was completed in 1983, the adjacent trumpet interchange with SR 112 became less relevant, leading to closure of the southbound ramps during early 2000s widening. Space for the former toll plaza was later sold to build the Saco Hotel and Conference Center.2 Direct access to that facility is available via the northbound exit ramps, but southbound drivers must use Interstate 195 east to Exit 1 (Industrial Park Road). 06/28/05
Flag Pond Road passes over Interstate 95 (Maine Turnpike) two miles north of Interstate 195 (Exit 36). Interstate 195 constitutes the Saco Industrial Spur, a 2.41 mile long freeway leading east to Old Orchard Beach and Maine 5 (Ocean Park Road). 07/08/12
Interstate 195 was built to serve industrial areas of north Saco. The freeway also provides the most direct route to Downtown Saco from Interstate 95 since the ramps to Maine 112 (North Street) closed. Interchanges along I-195 include those with Industrial Park Road and U.S. 1 (Main Street) at Maine 5 (Ocean Park Road). Industrial Park Road loops west from U.S. 1 to Maine 112 (North Street). Maine 112 joins Saco with Buxton to the north. 07/08/12
One half mile north of the trumpet interchange (Exit 36) with Interstate 195 (Saco Industrial Spur) on I-95 south. I-195 ends at Maine 5 (Ocean Park Road) just across the Old Orchard Beach town line. SR 5 follows Ocean Park Road to its intersection with Saco and Temple Avenues. Temple Avenue branches east to SR 9 (Grand Avenue) at Ocean Park while SR 5 turns northeast onto Saco Avenue to junction SR 98 (Portland Avenue) and 9 (Grand Avenue) at Old Orchard Beach. 07/08/12
Travelers destined for Interstate 195 east to Saco and Old Orchard Beach depart I-95 southbound at Exit 36. U.S. 1 (Main Street) south connects I-195 with both Downtown Saco and adjacent Biddeford. 07/08/12
Interstate 95 & Maine Turnpike reassurance shields posted ahead of the Maine 112 (North Street) overpass. Grading remains here from an abandoned loop ramp to I-195 east. 07/08/12
Approaching the Saco River on the Maine Turnpike south. Meeting the toll road next is Maine 111 (Alfred Street). Maine 111 leads southwest from Downtown Biddeford to Exit 32 and west to Lyman and Alfred. 07/08/12
Southbound at the South Street overpass, one mile north of the trumpet interchange (Exit 32) to Maine 111 (Alfred Street). Biddeford is home to the University of New England. 07/08/12
Exit 32 joins Interstate 95 (Maine Turnpike) with Maine 111 (Alfred Street) at the Biddeford Spur. The Biddeford Spur runs southeast to U.S. 1 (Elm Street) at Precourt Street, an industrial park road leading toward Biddeford Municipal Airport (B19). U.S. 1 parallels Interstate 95 through the coastal region of Cumberland County from Biddeford to Kittery. 06/28/05
Motorists bound for Maine 111 (Alfred Street) and the Biddeford Spur depart Interstate 95 south for Exit 32. SR 111 travels 13.7 miles overall between U.S. 202 & SR 4 near Sanford and SR 9 & 208 in Downtown Biddeford. 07/08/12
Next in line for southbound drivers is Kennebunk and Maine 35 (Exit 25). Maine 35 comprises a north-south state route between Kennebunkport and Bethel. 07/08/12
The Maine Turnpike Kennebunk Service Plaza precedes the folded diamond interchange with Maine 35 (Fletcher Street), though the Exit 25 off-ramp departs first. 07/08/12
SR 35 travels south two miles to U.S. 1 & SR 9A within Kennebunk and 5.6 miles east (with SR 9A) to its end at SR 9 (Western Avenue) in Kennebunkport. Motorists bound for Kennebunk Beach are directed onto SR 9A & 35 south to SR 9 west. 07/08/12
Three quarters of a mile ahead of the Kennebunk Service Plaza off-ramp. This is the final Maine Turnpike service area. 07/08/12
Forthcoming Maine 35 follows Fletcher Street south to U.S. 1 (Portland Road) and Alewive Road north to Maine 111 at Lyman. Alfred Road stems west from the Exit 25 area to West Kennebunk. 07/08/12
Eastern Trail spans Interstate 95 south at the dual off-ramps for both Kennebunk Service Plaza and Maine 35 in Biddeford. 07/08/12
Exit 25 leaves I-95 south for Maine 35 (Fletcher Street east / Alewive road north). SR 35 to U.S. 1 & SR 9A (Main Street) south leads to the Kennebunk town center. U.S. 1 continues from there to Elms and Wells. 07/08/12
Exit 25 circumvents Kennebunk Service Plaza to adjacent Alewive Road (SR 25). The service area provides food, fuel and tourist information. 07/08/12
Interstate 95 (Maine Turnpike) spans the Mousam River between the SR 35 and 99 (Cat Mousam Road) overpasses. 06/28/05
Maine 9 crosses paths with Interstate 95 again with Maine 109 at Wells (Exit 19). The state route straddles the coast from Old Orchard Beach southward through Kennebunkport to Elms, joining U.S. 1 briefly between Elms and Wells. SR 9 combines with SR 109 for 2.1 miles from U.S. 1 westward while U.S. 1 remains south to Moody and Ogunquit. 06/28/05
One mile north of the trumpet interchange (Exit 19) to Maine 9 & 109 (Sanford Road) on I-95 south. SR 9 & 109 split west of Wells on respective paths toward Sanford and North Berwick. SR 9 constitutes a multi-state route with New Hampshire 9 at Berwick. 06/28/05
Maine 109 also represents a multi-state route with New Hampshire 109 between Sanbornville, Springvale, Sanford, and Wells. 06/28/05
Exit 19 carries drivers onto Maine 9 & 109 (Sanford Road) from Interstate 95 south. SR 9 leads southwest 7.5 miles to junction SR 4 at North Berwick. SR 109 meanwhile ventures 9.5 northwest to meet SR 4 at South Sanford. 06/28/05
Interstate 95 continues south toward York and Kittery, the final destinations in southern Maine. Boston remains 70 miles south of Exit 19. 06/28/05
The York Main Toll Plaza lies just north of the diamond interchange (Exit 7) with Chases Pond Road. 06/28/05
Speed limits reduce as motorists approach the final Maine Turnpike toll plaza. E-ZPass-dedicated toll booth lanes are used in place of open road tolling (ORT) lanes. 06/24/13
Motorists with E-ZPass accounts must slow to 10 MPH to pass through. Interstate 95 is toll free from adjacent Exit 7 south to Portsmouth Circle in New Hampshire (Exit 5). 06/24/13
Exit 7 leaves the freeway immediately beyond the York Main Toll Plaza. Chases Pond Road links I-95 with nearby U.S. 1 (Blue Star Memorial Highway) at York Corner. U.S. 1A loops east from U.S. 1 nearby to York Village, York Harbor and York Beach. Maine 91 follows and angles northwest from U.S. 1 to South Berwick and Berwick. 06/24/13
A commercial vehicle weigh station / state police truck check station lies south of the York River and Beech Ridge Road overpass along Interstate 95 south. 06/28/05
The final Maine exit joins I-95 with U.S. 1 (Blue Star Memorial Highway), U.S. 1 Bypass and Maine 236 (Harold L. Dow Highway) in two miles. A wye interchange brings southbound drivers onto Interstate 95 from parallel U.S. 1 ahead of its split with U.S. 1 Bypass adjacent to the three-quarter cloverleaf interchange (Exit 2) with Maine 236. 06/24/13
A collector distributor roadway carries drivers to Maine 236 (Harold L. Dow Highway) north of the traffic rotary with U.S. 1 (Blue Star Memorial Highway) and Old Post Road. U.S. 1 south leads into Downtown Kittery while Maine 236 (Rogers Road) arcs east to Maine 101 (Whipple Road). 06/24/13

SR 236 travels north from Kittery six miles into the town of Eliot and 10.5 miles to South Berwick and 14.5 miles to its end at SR 9 in Berwick. 06/24/13
Like Chicago area signs, Interstate 95 features state-based control points as it leaves Maine. Pictured here is the c/d roadway departure for Exit 2 (Maine 236 to U.S. 1 Bypass and U.S. 1). Traffic from U.S. 1 south merges onto the c/d roadway ahead of the Exit 2 loop ramp to Harold L. Dow Highway. 06/24/13
Traveling the Exit 2 c/d roadway to Maine 236 (Harold L. Dow Highway). Until 1972 when the Piscataqua River Bridge opened for I-95, U.S. 1 Bypass was default connection between the Maine and New Hampshire Turnpikes.3 The US highway parallels I-95 south from Kittery to the Portsmouth Circle in New Hampshire before turning south to Meadowbrook. 06/28/05
Interstate 95 rises along the Piscataqua River Bridge on the approach to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Exits 7, 5, and 4 serve Portsmouth, with Exit 7 to Market Street providing the most direct route into Downtown. 06/28/05
