Interstate 278 New Jersey

Six guides cover Interstate 278 in New Jersey and New York:

Interstate 278 East
Milepost zero of Interstate 278 eastbound as the freeway departs the northbound lanes of U.S. 1 & 9 at the city of Linden. Interstate 278 links U.S. 1 & 9 with Interstate 95 (New Jersey Turnpike) and the Goethals Bridge. A wide grassy median remains from the abandoned plans to join Interstate 278 with its parent at Newark to the northwest. Photo taken 10/03/04.
Access to Interstate 278 eastbound is provided only to U.S. 1 & 9 northbound travelers. The four-lane freeway leaves the partial "Y" interchange with the federal highway tandem for its interchange with Brunswick Avenue and New Jersey 439 (Exit 1A). Note the wide median intended for the never built carriageways of Interstate 278 northwest to Interstate 78. Photo taken 10/03/04.
A non-descript sign lies within the median of Interstate 278 for the Interstate 95 & New Jersey Turnpike interchange ahead (Exit 1B). The New Jersey Turnpike and the Goethals Bridges are tolled highways. Therefore traffic not wishing to pay fees should exit onto Brunswick Avenue ahead. Photo taken 10/03/04.
Interstate 278 eastbound at the ramp departure of Exit 1A to Brunswick Avenue and New Jersey 439 (Bayway Avenue). Brunswick Avenue serves the Linden Oil complex to the south and city of Elizabeth to the north. Bayway Avenue stems east to Front Street along the Hudson River and northwest as New Jersey 439 to Elmora Avenue and junction U.S. 1 & 9 in Elizabeth. Photo taken 10/03/04.
Original button copy signs remain in use at the Exit 1B off-ramp to Interstate 95 and the New Jersey Turnpike. Brunswick Avenue passes over Interstate 278 at the gore point. The New Jersey Turnpike represents the main-north south corridor between the greater New York metropolitan area and Philadelphia, Delaware, and the George Washington Bridge. Photo taken 10/03/04.
The westbound Interstate 278 off-ramp to Interstate 95 and the New Jersey Turnpike travels overhead as Interstate 278 prepares to ascend onto the four-lane Goethals Bridge across the Hudson River. On-ramps from New Jersey 439 and Brunswick Avenue merge ahead from the left. Photo taken 10/03/04.
Ascending onto the eastbound approach of the Goethals Bridge. The four-lane cantilever span includes a $6.00 toll for all passenger vehicles. All Hudson River crossings between New Jersey and New York City maintain a $6.00 eastbound only fee. Photo taken 10/03/04.
Scenes Pertaining to Interstate 278
Brunswick Avenue southbound at the westbound on-ramp to Interstate 278 in Elizabeth. A state-named shield points to the final two miles of the freeway. Otherwise Interstate 278 ties into New Jersey 439 and Brunswick and Bayway Avenues between U.S. 1 & 9 and Interstate 95 and the New Jersey Turnpike. Photo taken 04/10/00.
