Interstate 295 - Rhode Island

Interstate 295 provides a bypass route for the greater Providence area to the west and north. The freeway carries four to six lanes on its two-state routing, serving Woonsocket near the junction with Rhode Island 146. With origins dating as early as a 1947 in the Providence-Pawtucket Metropolitan plan, the freeway was submitted for inclusion in the flegling Interstate highway system in 1955 as a parallel or replacement route to Rhode Island 5 and 116. Construction began later in 1964 with an overall completion by June 1975.1
