Interstate 295 North - Salem and Gloucester Counties

Interstate 295 North
Welcome to New Jersey! Interstate 295 crosses the 1951-opened Delaware Memorial Bridge northbound into Salem County ahead of the partial-cloverleaf interchange with New Jersey 49 (Exit 1A) east and U.S. 130 north (Exit 1B). The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) maintains Interstate 295 from Interstate 95 eastward to the New Jersey Turnpike. Thus signing practices through here do not adhere to standard NJDOT designs with back plated shields. Photo taken 04/25/04.
The Delaware Memorial Bridge provides eight overall lanes for Interstate 295 over the Delaware River. The span is tolled in the southbound direction only at a rate of $3.00 per passenger vehicle. Pictured here is the first New Jersey interchange of Interstate 295, Exit 1A for New Jersey 49 (Broadway) east. New Jersey 49 straddles the marshlands of the Delaware River watershed southward three miles to Pennsville and nine to the Salem County seat of Salem. Photo taken 04/25/04.
The four northbound lanes of Interstate 295 & U.S. 40 partition between three to New Jersey Turnpike north and Atlantic City (U.S. 40) and two for Interstate 295 north to Camden. The Exit 1B off-ramp to the northbound beginning of U.S. 130 (Broadway) departs in 1,000 feet from the Interstate 295 carriageway. U.S. 40 motorists stay to the left and exit the freeway ahead of the turnpike toll plaza. Photo taken 04/25/04.
A look at the previous set of overheads at the Interstate 295 north and New Jersey Turnpike north & U.S. 40 eastbound split. Note the pavement change from concrete to asphalt and the right-hand lane restriping reducing Interstate 295 from three to two lanes at the partition. Photo taken 05/95.
Exit 1B loops northward from Interstate 295 east to U.S. 130 (Broadway) north into Deepwater, Carneys Point, and Penns Grove. The intrastate U.S. 130 begins here and ends at New Brunswick at junction U.S. 1 in North Jersey. To the left U.S. 40 eastbound prepares to depart the New Jersey Turnpike mainline for Woodstown, Pole Tavern, Elmer, Mays Landing, and Atlantic City. The first four miles of U.S. 40 follow a divided highway with no traffic lights. Photo taken 04/25/04.

Hook Road loops east from New Jersey 49 (Broadway) to Salem County 551 parallel to Interstate 295 north. The nearby highway is served by the Exit 1C off-ramp of the northbound freeway. Traffic meanwhile merges onto Interstate 295 from Broadway northbound ahead of the pending off-ramp. Photo taken 04/25/04.

Exits 2B-C facilitate access to U.S. 40 east and U.S. 130 north for Penns Grove and Atlantic City. The partial-cloverleaf interchange exists at New Jersey 140 (Deepwater Slapes Corner Road) just north of the New Jersey Turnpike split with U.S. 40 (Wiley Road). Deepwater Slapes Corner Road constitutes the pre-Delaware Memorial Bridge alignment of U.S. 40 between Wiley Road and Deepwater (junction U.S. 130). Photo taken 04/25/04.

A companion Delaware 48 continued from the ferry launch in Wilmington northwestward into downtown at that time. When the first span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge opened in 1951, the ferry service was no longer needed and thus discontinued.
