Interstate 295 North
The longest stretch of Interstate 295 between interchanges exists between Exit 47 (Burlington County 541) and Exit 42 (Florence Columbus Road). Posted just north of Exit 47 is an older mileage sign for Bordentown (Exit 56), Ewing (Interstate 95 Exit 4), and Yardley, Pennsylvania (Interstate 95 Exit 51). Photo taken 04/25/04.

Burlington County 543 (Burlington Columbus Road) passes over Interstate 295 ahead of the Exit 52 interchange with Burlington County 656 (Florence Columbus Road). The county highway travels six miles east from Burlington City and U.S. 130 to Columbus and U.S. 206. Dunns Mill Road parallels Rising Sun Road between U.S. 130 and Fieldsboro to U.S. 206 (Bordentown Road). Until 1994 all Interstate 295 traffic was forced to exit onto U.S. 130 northbound at Bordentown. The section between Exit 57 and Interstate 195 (Exit 60) was the last to be completed of the 67-mile freeway. Signs for Exit 60 were replaced with new panels including the New Jersey Turnpike in place of New Jersey 129 and Belmar in place of Shore Points along Interstate 295 northbound. The sign changes coincide with new panels put in place along Interstate 195 eastbound touting the New Jersey Turnpike as part of Interstate 95. These processes are part of the overall project to relocate Interstate 95 onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike from Bristol, Pennsylvania eastward to the New Jersey state line. That project is still a long ways off from fruition however with completion slated for 2012. Photo taken 08/11/04.

Before Interstate 295 opened here in 1994, all Interstate 195 westbound traffic was diverted directly onto Interstate 295 and the Trenton Belt Line northbound. New Jersey 29 was constructed around the same time period and was not fully completed as a freeway into downtown until 2001. Photo taken 04/25/04.
Interstate 295 northbound expands to four overall lanes in anticipation of the Interstate 195 & New Jersey 29-129 off-ramp (Exit 60). A directional ramp carries northbound drivers onto New Jersey 29 & 129 into Trenton. New Jersey 129 splits from the New Jersey 29 freeway along Canal Boulevard at the first downtown exit. A second Mercerville interchange exists in the form of a full cloverleaf with Sloan Avenue at Exits 65A/B. Sloan Avenue carries Mercer County 649 1.4 miles between Sweet Briar Avenue and the intersection of Quaker Bridge Road (Mercer County 533) and Flock Road (Mercer County 649 east of County 533). Exit 65B loops onto Mercer County 649 (Sloan Avenue) westbound. Sloan Avenue intersects the north end of Klockner road at a jug handled intersect one half mile to the west. Otherwise the county route ends 1.75 miles westward at Mercer County 606 (Whitehead Road) near the Trenton Freeway of U.S. 1. Photo taken 04/25/04.

The final interchange at present of Interstate 295 northbound is the Exit 67A/B directional cloverleaf with U.S. 1 (Brunswick Pike). U.S. 1 comprises a six-lane surface arterial between Trenton and New Brunswick. In case you missed the ground level sign, an overhead also ushers in the beginning of the Exit 67 c/d roadway. U.S. 1 departs the Trenton Freeway two miles south of Interstate 295 for the Brunswick Pike. An interchange resides at the junction with Mercer County 533 at Clarksville just north of here. Otherwise the six-lane highway travels northward to Penns Neck, Princeton, Plainsboro, and North Brunswick en route to North Jersey. Photo taken 04/25/04.
The current northern terminus of Interstate 295 as signed at Exit 67A. Until 1993 Interstate 295 used to continue another two miles to U.S. 206 (former Exit 69 new Exit 8). The final two miles became part of an extended Interstate 95 once it was realized that the missing link between Trenton and New Brunswick would not come to fruition. Things will change again in 2012 when Interstate 95 relocates to the Pennsylvania Turnpike allowing for Interstate 295 to receive a substantial extension westward to Ewing and southward to Bristol, Pennsylvania. U.S. 1 (Brunswick Pike) southbound upgrades to the Trenton Freeway en route to downtown. The suppressed urban freeway cuts through the central business district to a toll bridge across the Delaware River. U.S. 1 (Trenton Freeway) crosses into the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 6.5 miles to the south. A 50 cent car toll is levied on all passenger vehicles utilizing the four-lane span.
