Interstate 384 East
An Interstate 384 reassurance shield in Arial font appears barely after the two exit only lanes begin to separate from the Interstate 84 mainline. Photo taken 05/29/09.
Just as soon as eastbound motorists on Interstate 384 split off from Interstate 84, there is an offramp for exit 1 to Silver Lane, Spencer Street and Manchester Community College. Photo taken 12/30/07.
A second Interstate 384 reassurance shield appears quite shortly after this first one, except this time on the left side of the road and in different font. Photo taken 05/29/09.
An HOV lane joins the mainline from the left and becomes a standard lane, while an additional lane gets added on the right from a lengthy and complex collector/distributor system. At this point the mainline has grown to 4 lanes. Photo taken 05/29/09.
Exit 2 for Keeney Street and Hartford Road. Photos taken 12/06/08, 12/08/08, 12/06/08.
The far right lane becomes an exit only lane for Connecticut 83. This exit serves interests to the historic downtown of Manchester, Manchester Memorial Hospital, Manchester Country Club and Glastonbury. Oddly enough, the control city of Providence is absent from the overhead sign in the second photo. Photos taken 12/06/08.
Exit 4 for Highland Road. Motorists on this exit actually get deposited onto Wyllys Street, whereas Highland Street runs parallel to Interstate 384. Photos taken 07/24/00, 12/30/07, 12/06/08.
The right lane becomes an exit only lane for Connecticut 85 to Bolton or Colchester, and reduces Interstate 384 to only two lanes in either direction. The expressway has become much more rural in nature by this time, and traffic counts are correspondingly lower. Photos taken 07/24/00 & 12/06/08.
While there are no signs explicitly stating that Interstate 384 ends, it is implied by the "Expressway Ends 1 Mile" sign. Interstate 384 ends shortly before the end of the expressway; the last portion is a cosigning of U.S. 6 and U.S. 44. Both U.S. highways parallel one another and can be used to get to Providence despite U.S. 6 only being signed as such. The left lane serves U.S. 44 east to Coventry, Mansfield and the University of Connecticut, and the right lane serves U.S. 6 east to Willimantic, home of Eastern Connecticut State University, and Providence, RI. Photo taken 12/06/08.
The expressway ends in Bolton Notch and motorists must take either U.S. 6 east or U.S. 44 east. Photo taken 12/06/08.
