Interstate 490 - New York

Interstate 490 provides a loop into the Rochester metropolitan area from the New York Thruway (Interstate 90). Beginning at Victor, Interstate 490 west travels northwest through the suburbs of Fairport, East Rochester, and Pittsford to the Rochester Outer Loop freeway (Interstate 590). While the Outer Loop provides a bypass of downtown, Interstate 490 travels directly into the central business district along the East Expressway. Once in downtown, Interstate 490 comprises the southern third of the Inner Loop freeway.

Interstate 490 continues west along the West Expressway to junction Interstate 390 & New York 390 (Outer Loop freeway) at Gates. The freeway splits with New York 531, a freeway spur leading to Brockport, and then turns southwest toward Chili Center and the New York Thruway.

In downtown Rochester, a major project is underway to replace the aging Genesee River bridge with a new signature span. Dubbed the Troup Howell bridge for the streets that it originally connected, the arch bridge will rise 85 feet above the river below with the arches themselves rising 70 feet above the road deck. Road work began in Spring 2004 and should be complete by Spring 2007. See Road Traffic Technology - Troup Howell Bridge, Monroe County, NY, USA for details of the project.

Scenes Pertaining to Interstate 490
Interstate 490 New York trailblazer posted on New York 31 (West Main Street) west at Broad Street. Nathan Perry provides a description: This is actually the eastern end of New York 33 (at that traffic light)...Also the overpass visible here is in fact Interstate 490 itself. And the brick building behind is Nick Tahou's, famous hots and home of the garbage plate. It was formerly the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh railroad station, and this spot was also the confluence of the Erie and Genesee Valley canals. Photo taken 05/28/00.
"To West Interstate 490 New York" trailblazer posted on New York 31 west. Located about a block from the above photo, New York 31 (Broad Street) parallels Interstate 490 ahead of the Allen Street on-ramp. Broad Street carries New York 31 northwest to Lyell Avenue otherwise. Photo taken 05/28/00.
Goodman Street northbound within the Exit 17 diamond interchange of Interstate 490. Broadway begins from the westbound off-ramp of Interstate 490 and parallels the freeway toward downtown. Photo taken 05/10/05.
Broadway westbound splits with the westbound on-ramp to Interstate 490 to Clinton Avenue (New York 15) and downtown Rochester. Broadway otherwise continues northwest to Union Street and the Inner Loop. Photo taken 05/10/05.
