The freeway quickly encounters a full-cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 283 (Exits 1A/B) just north of the Harrisburg East Interchange. The first eastbound reassurance shield of Pennsylvania 283 lies between the Interstate 76 off-ramp and the Interstate 283 southbound on-ramp. A small red detour sign coincides with the assembly. Interstate 283 links Interstate 76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike) and Pennsylvania 283 with Interstate 83 & U.S. 322 at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Interchange near Lawnton. Interstate 283 ends at Interstate 83 & U.S. 322 (Capital Beltway) in two miles. Interstate 83 continues five miles from there to its terminus at junction Interstate 81 (Exit 51). The next interchange for eastbound travelers serves the Harrisburg International Airport access road at Lower Swatara Township. The access road comprises a four-lane freeway between Pennsylvania 283 and the Airport terminal itself at Middletown. An off-ramp exists on the freeway to Spring Garden Drive for Pennsylvania 441 (Oberlin Drive) for Pennsylvania 283 eastbound drivers. Photo taken 10/08/01. After crossing the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Pennsylvania 283 approaches Toll House Road which links the freeway with Pennsylvania 230 (Harrisburg Pike) and 341 (Colebrook Road). Pennsylvania 341 ventures east from the Harrisburg Pike to Deodate and Lawn. Pennsylvania 230 parallels Pennsylvania 283 to the south between Middletown and Salunga. Photo taken 10/08/01. Approaching the Pennsylvania 743 interchange. Pennsylvania 743 (Hershey Road) is a north south route that passes through Elizabethtown and Hershey. Pennsylvania 241 (Mt. Gretna Road) ties into Hershey Road from Bellaire to the northeast. Photo taken 10/08/01. Two miles west of the Pennsylvania 772 (Mt. Joy Road) diamond interchange on Pennsylvania 283 eastbound. Pennsylvania 772 travels north from Marietta and Mount Joy to Pennsylvania 283 en route to Sporting Hill and Manheim. The state route intersects Pennsylvania 230 (Main Street) as Manheim Street 2.2 miles to the south. Photo taken 10/08/01. Pennsylvania 722 (State Road) intersects Pennsylvania 283 near East Petersburg in the great Lancaster metropolitan area. State Road serves the Landisville community via its connection with the Harrisburg Pike (old U.S. 230) east of town. Old U.S. 230 follows Main Street through town. Photo taken 10/08/01. Pennsylvania 283 eastbound as it nears the half-cloverleaf interchange with Pennsylvania 72 (Manheim Pike). Pennsylvania 72 ends in Lancaster at junction U.S. 222 & Pennsylvania 272 (McGovern Avenue & Prince Street). The state highway flows northward out of Lancaster to Maheim and Lebanon otherwise. Approaching the eastern terminus of Pennsylvania 283. The ramp to westbound U.S. 30 was added to the freeway with the widening/upgrade of the Lancaster Bypass. This project was underway between 1999 and 2002. Before Pennsylvania 283 was upgraded to modern standards, the freeway consisted of four narrow lanes with a metal guard rail for a median. Photo taken 10/08/01. Eastbound Pennsylvania 283 at the westbound off-ramp to U.S. 30. U.S. 30 travels a four-lane freeway between Lancaster and York to the west. The eastbound Pennsylvania 283 roadway onto eastbound U.S. 30 parallels the U.S. 30 mainline for a short distance with an independent ramp for Fruitville Pike. Photo taken 10/08/01. Traffic to Fruitville Pike departs Pennsylvania 283 eastbound ahead of its merge onto U.S. 30 east. Fruitville Pike stems northward from Pennsylvania 72 and Lancaster to Manheim. The next exit serves the collector/distributor roadway for Pennsylvania 501 (Lititz Pike) and U.S. 222 south & Pennsylvania 272 (Oregon Pike) along U.S. 30 eastbound. Photo taken 10/08/01. Pennsylvania 283 draws to a close after a 29-mile journey from Highspire to Lancaster. A partial "Y" interchange composed the eastern terminus until the early 2000s. The modernizing of Pennsylvania 283 took place in conjunction with the widening and upgrading project of the U.S. 30 Lancaster Bypass.
