U.S. Highway 222 Southbound

The guide for U.S. 222 is split between three components:

U.S. 222 South
Interstate 78 Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Turnpike, and Pennsylvania 309 shield assembly at the westbound Interstate 78 ramp from Pennsylvania 222 (Hamilton Boulevard) southbound at Allentown (pop. 106,632). This interchange marks the southern terminus of Pennsylvania 222 and the southbound beginning of U.S. 222. Photo taken 07/28/00.
A partial-cloverleaf interchange composes the junction of U.S. 222 & Pennsylvania 222 (Hamilton Boulevard) with Interstate 78 & Pennsylvania 309. Pictured here is the first U.S. 222 southbound reassurance signage as Hamilton Boulevard passes underneath Interstate 78 & Pennsylvania 309 overhead. Interstate 78 utilized the older Pennsylvania 309 expressway southwest of Allentown. Eastward toward Bethelehem and Easton, Interstate 78 utilizes a younger freeway only opened in the early 1990s. Photo taken 07/28/00.
U.S. 222 (Lauer Road) southbound approaching the split with U.S. 222 Business (Allentown Pike) near Blandon. Allentown Pike represents the pre-2000 alignment of the federal highway as U.S. 222 traveled through the city of Reading (pop. 81,201). Upon completion of the freeway between U.S. 422 & the Warren Street Bypass and the North Reading bypass, U.S. 222 saw realignment from Allentown Pike and the 5th Street Highway through the borough Laureldale (pop. 3779). U.S. Highway 222 Southbound

U.S. 222 will relocate from its overlap with U.S. 422 between the Warren Street Bypass (Pennsylvania 12) and original alignment at Bingman Street/Lancaster Avenue by the end of 2004. Therefore the Future U.S. 222 freeway segment is profiled for U.S. 222 south here instead of the soon to be removed overlap with U.S. 422 and future U.S. 222 Business. For coverage of those segments of roadway, please see the U.S. 422 eastbound guide or the U.S. 222 Business guide.

Future U.S. 222 South
At present U.S. 222 overlaps with U.S. 422 between the Warren Street Bypass and its original alignment of Lancaster Avenue & Bingaman Street. This will change upon the completion of a new freeway between U.S. 422 and U.S. 222 (Lancaster Pike) near Shillington. In the meantime U.S. 422 travels solo westward from the Warren Street Bypass (Pennsylvania 12) and west Reading bypass to Wyomissing. Pictured here is 0.25-mile overhead for the Paper Mill Road exit on U.S. 422 & Future U.S. 222 southbound as they leave their confluence with Pennsylvania 12. Photo taken 08/01/04.
