New Brunswick - Provincial Highway 2, Provincial Highway 8, Provincial Highway 9, and Provincial Highway 10

New Brunswick - Provincial Highway 2, Provincial Highway 8, Provincial Highway 9, and Provincial Highway 10 sign.

Fredericton. I got this one just under the wire. According to http://the506.com/roads/NB/002.html, the big renumbering of New Brunswick’s highways occurred in 1965. These were the shields used before they switched to markers featuring the shape of the province, in three different colors, representing arterial (green), collector (blue) and local (black) routes. It looks like the old highway department in New Brunswick liked our US shield design. I wonder if they gave AASHTO the idea of the squares.

Further research indicates that these shields may be of Nova Scotia origin, as this is the contemporary design from that province. New Brunswick's green shields with the provincial shape date back to the 1940s, and the renumbering of 1965 added the blue and black shields for the new road classifications. According to Jim Lindsay, the Nova Scotia style shields were everywhere in New Brunswick in the early 1960s. They must've been a brief idea New Brunswick tried, before returning to the more locally flavored design.
