Interstate 471 North

Exits 2 and 3 (junction Kentucky 1892) serve the city of Fort Thomas, which lies east of Interstate 471 and west of the Ohio River. The city derives its name from Civil War General George Henry Thomas and was incorporated on February 27, 1867. 16,000 call the municipality home. Photo taken 11/14/04.

Interstate 471 crosses the Ohio across the yellow Daniel Carter Beard Bridge. The span was added to the Interstate system in 1981 when Interstate 471 was designated, but the route was not fully completed until 1985 when ramps to Interstate 71 opened. Construction of the bridge occurred by 1977, but the bridge was only opened between access ramps at each end.1 Photo taken 11/14/04.
Northbound Interstate 471 carries four overall lanes. Exit 6A provides access to U.S. 50 (Columbia Parkway) east along the Ohio River and U.S. 50 (Fort Washington Way) west to Interstate 71 south and 3rd Street. 3rd Street parallels Interstate 71 near the stadiums for the Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds. Interstate 471 South
Two lanes join Interstate 471 south from U.S. 50 (Fort Washington Way) east to form the overall four-lane southbound Dan Beard Bridge. The right-hand lane, which was the shoulder until a 2000-restriping, defaults onto Exit 5 for Kentucky 8 at the south end of the span. Photo taken 11/14/04.

Exit 5 departs Interstate 471 south as a loop ramp to Park Avenue north to Kentucky 8 (Dave Cowens Drive). Kentucky 8 exists as a segmented route along the Ohio River from Kentucky 20 near Idlewild to U.S. 23 at South Portsmouth. Locally the route joins downtown Newport with central Bellevue.
