Interstate 35W North - Tarrant County (from Interstate 30)

Interstate 35W North
Spur 280 forms the main route into downtown Fort Worth from IH 35W. East of the spur, the US 287 freeway runs southeast through town and down to Mansfield. There is no access from IH 35W to the US 287 freeway. Photo taken 03/11/08.
Another "Thru Traffic" pull through sign sits here on the east side of downtown. The Spur 280 exit is immediately followed by an exit to the SH 121 freeway. Photo taken 03/11/08.
As the graphic suggests, the exit for Spur 280 is a loop ramp and the interchange is a partial cloverleaf. The original interchange opened in 1960. Photo taken 03/11/08.
US 377 and SH 121 split off here. US 377 begins near the Mexican border and runs north to IH 44 in Oklahoma. North of Fort Worth, US 377 forms an important arterial route. Photo taken 03/11/08.
The two right lanes split off here. This marks the southern end of SH 121, which is a freeway running northeast to DFW airport and beyond. Plans call for the extension of SH 121 southwest from Fort Worth as a toll road. Photo taken 03/11/08.
Exit 52B departs Interstate 35W and quickly partitions into a direct ramp onto Texas 121 (Airport Freeway) and a ramp leading to the frontage road system with connections to Belknap Street, U.S. 377's surface street routing through northeast Fort Worth. Texas 121 joins portions of Interstate 820 and Texas 183 eastward to Bedford. The Airport Freeway continues from there to DFW International Airport. Photo taken 03/11/08.
After downtown, the original construction of IH 35W remains. This is an early 1960s freeway that has never been upgraded. Pharr and Carver Streets are both minor routes northeast of downtown. Photo taken 03/11/08.

IH 35W northbound at Carver (Exit 52E). Carver Avenue serves an isolated residential area bound by the Trinity River and the Union Pacific Railroad line. Photo taken 03/11/08.

As the freeway prepares to cross the Trinity River, signs appear for the next exit at Northside/Yucca. Northside Drive turns into Yucca east of the freeway. Both form a northern bypass of downtown and the stockyards. Photo taken 03/11/08.
IH 35W crosses the Trinity River northeast of downtown. The bridge was originally built in 1961 but has seen some upgrades since. Photo taken 03/11/08.
SH 183 is the next exit. Texas 183 crosses Interstate 35W as an arterial, upgrading into an important freeway just a few miles east. As a freeway the highway generally maintains six lanes to Dallas and Irving, with eight-lane sections near the northeast interchange with Loop 820 in far east Fort Worth at the Airport interchange between Euless Main Street and Int'l Pkwy, and in Dallas between SH 114 and IH35E Stemmons.1 In Fort Worth, it is just an arterial road. Photo taken 03/11/08.
28th Street runs east and west through North Fort Worth. Its home to a lot of old motels and gas stations and runs generally through poorer neighborhoods. Photo taken 03/11/08.
The old bridge is evident that this is an old freeway. The 28th Street exit is a partial cloverleaf with loop ramps on the north side. IH 35W loses its third lane here. Photo taken 03/11/08.
33rd/Long is the next northbound exit. Long runs east into the center of Haltom City, one of Fort Worth's oldest suburbs. Photo taken 03/11/08.
IH 35W northbound at 33rd/Long. There is no northbound reentry from this exit, as it has railroad tracks on the north side that do not allow for ramps. Photo taken 03/11/08.
Meacham Blvd is an important route on the north side of town and is the next exit. Photo taken 03/11/08.
IH 35W northbound at Meacham. Meacham connects the freeway to Fort Worth's municipal Meacham Airport. The airport originally saw commercial service but today is only used by corporate and cargo planes. Photo taken 03/11/08.
Melody Mills Dr is an exit that was added after the original freeway opened, it runs east and west to industrial areas. Photo taken 03/11/08.
IH 35W northbound at Melody Mills, this exit is just south of the 820 interchange. Photo taken 03/11/08.
IH 35W northbound at IH 820. This interchange opened in 1967 and has never been upgraded. Plans call for it to be rebuilt starting in 2009. Additionally, US 287 shows up here for the first time since downtown. Photo taken 03/11/08.
IH 820s west ramp is a left exit and, as most freeway loops go, does not have a control point. Photo taken 03/11/08.
North of IH 820, 35W opened in the early 70s. Traffic from Interstate 820 enters here and the road briefly gains another lane. Photo taken 03/11/08.
