U.S. Highway 54 Texas - Patriot Freeway

US 54 was originally designated as US 70, and changed to US 54 in the 1939 redesignation of the State Highway system. The freeway was added to the 1963 El Paso freeway plan, with construction beginning in the early 1970s.
The freeway was opened between IH-10 and Trowbridge Drive in 1973, and extended north to Tompkins Road by 1974. The freeway was extended north to Loop 375, and completed between IH-110 and Loop 375 in 1976.
The frontage roads were completed on the freeway alignment between Loop 375 (north) and BU 54 in Newman in 1992, with freeway mainlanes completed to the end of the present-day freeway in 2004.
Exits were renumbered in early 2006 to match the new
Texas Reference Marker system (which replaced mileposts),
which accounts for the disparities between the text
and some photos.
