Colorado E-470

E-470, a private toll facility, is the eastern half of the Denver Beltway. Partially completed as of February 2002, the entire route from Interstate 25/Colorado C-470 in the south all the way to Interstate 25/W-470 in the north is expected to be complete in 2003. The Northwest Parkway (formerly W-470) is the proposed extension of E-470 from Interstate 25 west to U.S. 36 southeast of Boulder then south to meet the northern end of Colorado 470. The first segment, from U.S. 36 to Interstate 25, opened in November 2003. The rest of the Northwest Parkway is slated for construction by 2010.

The E-470 is a freeway, with tolls charged at regular intervals. It does not have much traffic, but that is partially due to the fact that it does not connect to Interstate 25 at both ends yet. E-470 will become more critical as traffic increases in the downtown area and as Interstate 25 construction projects such as T-Rex and the eventual Broadway viaduct replacement snarl traffic.

Eastbound Iliff Avenue approaching Junction E-470. The design of the E-470 is unique to Colorado. The design was unveiled in 1993 when the first leg of E-470 was opened. While the gray, white, and black design portrays the Front Range of the Rockies close-up, it is not very clear from a distance. The numerals for E-470 are difficult to read, but at least the color scheme distinguishes this route from any other in Colorado. The yellow "tollway" banner is fairly commonly seen above the E-470 shield on junction assemblies like this one. Photo taken 02/02/02.
