Interstate 15 North - Las Vegas Vicinity

Interstate 15 north
This mileage sign provides the distance to the next three exits along northbound: Exit 36, Russell Road; Exit 37, Tropicana Avenue/Frank Sinatra Drive; and Exit 38, Flamingo Road. Exit 36/Russell Road is the best route to Mandalay Bay, Four Seasons, and Luxor; Exit 37/Nevada 593/Tropicana Avenue/Frank Sinatra Drive is the best route to New York New York, Excalibur, MGM Grand, Monte Carlo, San Remo, and Tropicana; Exit 38/Nevada 592/Flamingo Road is the best route to Caesar's Palace, Bellagio, Bally's, Paris, Aladdin, Barbary Coast, Mirage, Treasure Island, Harrah's, the Venetian, and Frontier. Photo taken 10/19/04.
The next two exits serve Frank Sinatra Drive, a parallel frontage road between Exits 37 (Russell Road) and 39 (Flamingo Road). Frank Sinatra Drive, opened in late 2003, provides a surface arterial between the freeway and nearby casinos and businesses. Photo taken 10/19/04.
Nearing the departure of the Exit 36 two-lane off-ramp onto the adjacent Frank Sinatra Drive northbound and Russell Street. Russell Street comprises an east-west connector between Valley View Drive, Interstate 15, and Las Vegas Boulevard South (Nevada 604). Photo taken 10/19/04.
Exit 36 departs Interstate 15 northbound at a railroad over crossing. Frank Sinatra Drive splits and begins its northward drive ahead. Russell Road meanwhile intersects the freeway via a diamond interchange. Photo taken 10/19/04.
Looking at the offramp from Interstate 15 to Russell Road is this overhead sign for Frank Sinatra Drive and Russell Road. Frank Sinatra Drive parallels both Interstate 15 and Las Vegas Boulevard, offering an alternative to both roads. Photo taken 03/28/08.
The Mandalay Bay is currently the southernmost resort and casino on the Las Vegas Strip; it dominates the view at the Russell Road interchange. Photo taken 03/28/08.
The next exit along Interstate 15 north is Exit 37, Junction Nevada 593/Tropicana Avenue and Frank Sinatra Drive (one mile). Nevada 593 tallies 7.492 miles between Industrial Road (Interstate 15) east to Boulder Highway (Nevada 582). The state highway used to continue west to Rainbow Boulevard (Nevada 595). Russell Road passes overhead in this scene. Photo taken 10/19/04.

The massive Mandalay Bay marquee and color screen dominate the view as the freeway continues north alongside the Las Vegas Strip. Photos taken 03/28/08.
Exit 37 is a two-lane exit along northbound, with the right lane exit only to Nevada 593/Tropicana Avenue and the optional lane leads to Frank Sinatra Drive. Tropicana Avenue constitutes a busy east-west surface arterial between Nevada 595 (Rainbow Boulevard) and Nevada 582 (Boulder Highway). Photo taken 10/19/04.
This mileage sign along northbound Interstate 15 provides the distance to the next three exits: Exit 37, Junction Nevada 593/Tropicana Avenue and Frank Sinatra Drive; Exit 38, Junction Nevada 592/Flamingo Road; and Exit 39, Junction Nevada 591/Spring Mountain Road. Hacienda Avenue and Mandalay Bay Road pass over the freeway 0.25 mile south of the Tropicana Avenue diamond interchange. Photo taken 10/19/04.
The pyramid-shaped Luxor resort and casino comes into view on the east side of Interstate 15 along its section of the Strip. Photo taken 10/19/04.
Interstate 15 northbound at the Exit 37 ramp departure for Tropicana Avenue (Nevada 593 east) and Frank Sinatra Drive northbound. Nevada 593 crosses Nevada 604 (Las Vegas Boulevard) in 0.4 miles and Nevada 605 (Paradise Road) in 1.7 miles. Tropicana Avenue continues west 3.5 miles to junction Nevada 595 (Rainbow Boulevard). Photo taken 10/19/04.
Prior to the offramp for Tropicana Avenue (Nevada 593 east) and Frank Sinatra Drive north, the Excalibur and New York New York resorts and casinos come into view on the east side of Interstate 15. Photo taken 10/19/04.
This view of the offramp shows the Exit 37 ramp split for Tropicana Avenue and Frank Sinatra Drive north. The off-ramp to Frank Sinatra Drive passes underneath Tropicana Avenue and the northbound on-ramp to Interstate 15. Frank Sinatra Drive intersects Rue De Monte Carlo north of the Nevada 593 over crossing. Photos taken 10/19/04 and 03/28/08.

Passing through the Exit 37 interchange with Tropicana Avenue on Interstate 15 north. A high-speed flyover carries Interstate 15 southbound drivers onto Nevada 593 (Tropicana Avenue) eastbound. Photo taken 10/19/04.
The City Center development continues between Monte Carlo and the Bellagio. This massive development will result in a change to both the Strip and to Interstate 15 as the freeway continues north parallel to the Strip. This view is from the onramp from Tropicana Avenue to Interstate 15 north. Photo taken 03/29/08.
The next casino resort seen on the Las Vegas Strip is the Monte Carlo (view looking east toward the Strip). Believe it or not, we are still not in the city of Las Vegas. Many of the best-known hotels, resorts, and casinos are located south of downtown Las Vegas. Photo taken 10/19/04.
This mileage sign was added by 2003-2004 and was gone by 2008 due to the City Center project. The next exit (Exit 38, Flamingo Road) was omitted from this mileage sign, but the Sahara Avenue and Charleston Boulevard exits were listed. A pair of large marquees lie along the northbound frontage of Interstate 15 for the adjacent Bellagio Hotel and Casino. Only one of them remains in 2008 due to the City Center project. Photos taken 03/29/08 and 2/16/04.
Northbound Interstate 15 reaches Exit 38, Junction Nevada 592/Flamingo Road. Nevada 592/Flamingo Road extends from Nevada 595 (Rainbow Boulevard) east to Nevada 582 (Boulder Highway / former Business U.S. 93-95). Exit 39 departs soon after Exit 38 for Spring Mountain Road and Highland Drive. Many of the prime and major arterials in the Las Vegas Basin are currently state routes; however, there are precious few signs that identify these routes as state routes. Flamingo Road otherwise travels west to 1.5 miles to Decatur Boulevard and east to the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Photos taken 03/29/08 and 2/16/04.
An upcoming exits sign lists the next three departure points from Interstate 15 northbound: Flamingo Road (Nevada 592), Spring Mountain Road, and Sahara Avenue (Nevada 589). The Exit 39 off-ramp leaves the northbound freeway ahead of the Flamingo Road overpass, paralleling the freeway for one half mile through to the Spring Mountain Road directional-cloverleaf interchange. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Interstate 15 passes underneath Harmon Avenue and partitions with the Exit 38 off-ramp to Flamingo Road (Nevada 592). Flamingo Road intersects Las Vegas Boulevard to the east and Valley View Boulevard to the west. A two-lane off-ramp otherwise splits soon after Exit 38 for the Spring Mountain Road interchange. Photo taken 03/29/08.
The Exit 38 off-ramp widens to five overall lanes before ending at Flamingo Road (Nevada 592). Flamingo Road represents another in a series of east-west surface arterials between the Las Vegas Beltway (Clark County 215) and Nevada 582 (Boulder Highway). Photo taken 03/29/08.
Northbound Interstate 15 reaches Exit 39, Junction Nevada 591/Spring Mountain Road. Only the section of Spring Mountain Road that is immediately east and west of Interstate 15 is currently maintained by the Nevada DOT as part of Nevada 591. The rest of the route is maintained by Clark County. After Exit 40 (Junction Nevada 589), Interstate 15 will finally enter the city of Las Vegas. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Attached to the Nevada 592 (Flamingo Road) over crossing is the two-mile guide sign for the next exit, Junction Nevada 589/Sahara Avenue (Exit 40). Exit 39 ascends above the Flamingo Road northbound on-ramp and Industrial Road ahead of its split to Spring Mountain Road (Nevada 591) east and west and Highland Drive north. Sahara Drive (Nevada 589) skirts the southern city limits of Las Vegas between Hualapai Way and Fremont Street (Nevada 582). Photo taken 03/29/08.
This neutered shield is located on the median jersey barrier between the Flamingo Road partial-cloverleaf interchange and Spring Mountain Road (Nevada 591). Industrial Road and Twain Avenue pass underneath Interstate 15 here. Photo taken 02/16/04.
Exit 39 partitions into ramps for Spring Mountain Road west & Highland Drive north and Spring Mountain Road east to Nevada 604 (Las Vegas Boulevard). Spring Mountain Road crosses Las Vegas Boulevard in 0.6 miles at the Fashion Show Mall. The east-west road meets Durango Drive 5.5 miles to the west at Desert Breeze County Park. Highland Drive provides connections to the nearby Desert Inn Super Arterial eastbound. NDOT only maintains a 0.242-mile stretch (Nevada 591) of Spring Mountain Road at the Interstate 15 interchange. Photo taken 03/29/08.
A high-speed flyover carries southbound Interstate 15 motorists onto Spring Mountain Road eastbound for the Las Vegas Strip. Spring Mountain Road passes over Industrial Road ahead of its intersection with Nevada 604 (Las Vegas Boulevard). Photo taken 03/29/08.
The next four exits all serve the city of Las Vegas. This is the first city encountered by Interstate 15 since leaving the city of Barstow in California. Las Vegas, a Spanish word that translates to "the meadows" in English, was established in 1905 and incorporated as a city in 1911. When gambling was legalized in Las Vegas in March 1931, the city began its inexorable growth. In 2000, the official Census population was 478,434 people within the city of Las Vegas. This excludes the heavily populated unincorporated areas of Clark County, including the popular Las Vegas Strip. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Sahara Avenue is the first exit for the city of Las Vegas; however, this exit also leads to the Convention Center, which is actually located south of Sahara Avenue and the city limits (along Nevada 605/Paradise Road). This is the best exit to the convention center. Photo taken 03/29/08.
This overhead sign was removed between 2004 and 2008. This upcoming exits mileage sign along northbound Interstate 15 indicated that the next four exits serve Downtown Las Vegas: Exit 40, Nevada 589/Sahara Avenue; Exit 41, Nevada 159/Charleston Avenue; Exit 42, Junction Interstate 515/U.S. 93-95; and Exit 43, Washington Avenue. Photos taken 02/16/04 and 10/19/04.
Northbound Interstate 15 approaches Exit 40, Nevada 589/Sahara Avenue, next right. Sahara Avenue leads east to Stratosphere, the Las Vegas Hilton/Star Trek Experience, Las Vegas Country Club, Circus Circus, and Stardust. Photo taken 03/29/08.
A newly placed upcoming exits mileage sign along northbound Interstate 15 provides the distance to the next three exits: Exit 40, Junction Nevada 589/Sahara Avenue; Exit 41, Nevada 159/Charleston Avenue; and Exit 42, Junction Interstate 515/U.S. 93-95. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Exit 40, which connects to Nevada 589 (Sahara Avenue) departs Interstate 15 north at this offramp. Nevada 589 follows a viaduct from the freeway east to just past Industrial Road. From there the state highway intersects Las Vegas 604 (Las Vegas Boulevard) and Paradise Road (Nevada 605). Photo taken 03/29/08.
Formerly just a diamond interchange, the junction between the two highways was upgraded to include a high-speed flyover and loop ramp onto Sahara Avenue eastbound from Interstate 15 south. Photo taken 03/29/08.
The Las Vegas Stratosphere tower comes into view east of Interstate 15. Located within the city of Las Vegas at the north end of the Las Vegas Strip, this popular destination offers 360-views of the surrounding Las Vegas Valley from the top of the 1,149-foot tower. Las Vegas Stratosphere is the tallest free-standing structure in Nevada and the second-tallest free-standing structure in the United States west of the Mississippi River, after the Kennecott Smokestack in Magna, Utah. Opened on April 30, 1996, the Stratosphere became a popular tourist destination for its views and relatively low room rates (when compared to other Strip hotels).1 Photo taken 03/29/08.
This Interstate 15 shield is located after the Nevada 589/Sahara Avenue interchange. A narrow swath of industrial land exists east of the freeway. Western Avenue, the Union-Pacific Railroad line, and Industrial Road parallel Interstate 15 close by between the northbound lanes and Las Vegas Boulevard. Photo taken 02/16/04.
The next northbound interchange joins Interstate 15 with Nevada 159 (Charleston Boulevard). Nevada 159 constitutes 31.516 miles of pavement between Nevada 160 (Blue Diamond Road) to Nevada 612 (Nellis Boulevard). The state highway links Las Vegas with the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area to the west. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Exit 41A leaves Interstate 15 northbound for Nevada 159 (Charleston Boulevard) eastbound. Heading east, Nevada 159 leads to Grand Central Parkway, which in turn connects to the Clark County Government Center. Grand Central Parkway flows northeast from Nevada 159 to Main Street in downtown Las Vegas. The state highway skims the southern reaches of the Las Vegas central business district at 4th Street and Las Vegas Boulevard in 0.6 miles. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Prior to the reconstruction of this freeway in 2000 (Project Neon), these older signs were in place. Note that the Nevada 159 shield was omitted on these older signs. Photo taken 11/11/00.
One mile south of junction Interstate 515 & U.S. 93-95 (Exits 42A/B) near the Exit 41A ramp departure. Nevada 159 (Charleston Boulevard) travels west to University Medical Center and junction Nevada 599 (Rancho Drive) nearby. This stretch of Interstate 15 was reconstructed in 2000 as part of Nevada DOT's Project Neon, which covered the Interstate 15 corridor from Sahara Avenue north to Interstate 515/U.S. 93-95. Photos taken 03/28/08 and 10/19/04.
Northbound Interstate 15 reaches Exit 41B, Junction Nevada 159/Charleston Boulevard west. Heading west, Nevada 159 crosses a good deal of the city of Las Vegas, finally leaving the urban area after passing by Clark County Route 215/Las Vegas Beltway south of Summerlin. Nevada 159 leads to Red Rock and Blue Diamond in the shadow of Mount Charleston, which dominates the western skyline in the Las Vegas basin. Photo taken 03/28/08.
Exit 41B splits into lanes for Grand Central Parkway northbound to Clark County Government Center at Bonneville Avenue and the parkway southbound for its junction with Nevada 159 (Charleston Boulevard). Photo taken 10/19/04.
The next exits along northbound are Exits 42A-B, Junction Interstate 515 snd Future Interstate 11 south and U.S. 93-95 (Las Vegas Downtown Expressway / Oran K. Gragson Expressway). Interstate 515, Future Interstate 11, and U.S. 93-95 travel south toward Henderson and split outside of Boulder City. U.S. 93 and Future Interstate 11 travel toward Hoover Dam and Kingman, while U.S. 95 proceeds south toward Laughlin and Needles. From this interchange, U.S. 95 north heads toward Summerlin and northwest Las Vegas, and U.S. 93 north merges onto Interstate 15 north. Photo taken 03/28/08.
Northbound Interstate 15 approaches Exit 42A, U.S. 95/Downtown Expressway north to Reno. Exit 42B provides the connection to Junction Interstate 515/Downtown Expressway, Future Interstate 11, and U.S. 93-95 south to Phoenix, with connections to downtown Las Vegas. The exit for Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is accessed from the transition ramp from northbound Interstate 15 onto U.S. 95 northbound. Photos taken 03/29/08 and 10/19/04.
This upcoming exits mileage sign along northbound is posted for the next three exits: Exit 42A, Junction Interstate 515, Future Interstate 11, and U.S. 93-95 south; Exit 42B, Junction U.S. 95 north; and Exit 43, D Street/Washington Avenue. Interstate 11 was adopted as a Congressionally mandated route designation between Las Vegas and Phoenix in July 2012 with the passage of the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), Section 1104. Photos taken 03/29/08 and 10/19/04.
Northbound Interstate 15 enters the Spaghetti Bowl interchange: Exit 42A, U.S. 95 north to Summerlin Parkway, northwest Las Vegas, and Reno, with connections to Martin Luther King. Jr. Boulevard. Exit 42B is Interstate 515, Future Interstate 11, and U.S. 93-95 south, while Interstate 15 and U.S. 93 north continue straight ahead. This interchange was reconstructed massively in the late 1990s, and this picture shows the post-construction configuration. Photos taken 03/29/08 and 10/19/04.
This view of the Spaghetti Bowl interchange is found along northbound Interstate 15 at the gore point for the ramp to northbound U.S. 95 (Exit 42A). This interchange was reconstructed in the late 1990s, resulting in many additional movements as well as more capacity. Exit 42A constitutes the highest flyover in the interchange complex. Photo taken 03/29/08.
This series of pictures follows the movement from Interstate 15 north to U.S. 95/Downtown Expressway north to Reno via Exit 42A. An offramp from this towering transition ramp leads to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The massive U.S. 95 freeway comes into view as the tall transition ramp flies over the sprawling interchange. Photos taken 05/14/12 by Steve Hanudel and Erik Slotboom.
Still on the transition ramp from Interstate 15 north to U.S. 95 north, a second slip ramp connects to Business U.S. 95/Rancho Drive north. After that interchange, traffic from Interstate 15 finally merges onto U.S. 95 north. Photos taken 05/14/12 by Steve Hanudel and Erik Slotboom.
Returning to the Interstate 15 mainline back at the Spaghetti Bowl interchange, northbound Interstate 15 next reaches Exit 42B, Junction Interstate 515, U.S. 93, and U.S. 95 (Future Interstate 11) south. Interstate 515 reaches East Las Vegas in ten miles and Henderson in 14 miles. Boulder City lies 26 miles southeast, beyond the end of the Interstate 515 freeway along U.S. 93. This interchange marks the northern terminus of Interstate 515. Photos taken 03/29/08 and 10/19/04.
An elaborate network of flyover ramps facilitate the movements between Interstate 15 and Interstate 515 (Future Interstate 11) & U.S. 93-95 at Exit 42. Photos taken 02/16/04 and 10/19/04.
Interstate 15 and U.S. 93 north
The next exit along Interstate 15 and U.S. 93 north is Exit 43, Junction Nevada 578/Washington Street/D Street, next right. The next several signs are representative of an older standard of signage, which has non-reflective, forest green signs that are lit at night. These signs are the only ones remaining in southern Nevada, and are similar to the signs found in California if there were no button copy on the California signs. A handful of similar signs exist in Reno on both Interstate 80 and Interstate 580 & U.S. 395. Photo taken 10/19/04.
Northbound Interstate 15 and U.S. 93 reach Exit 43, Junction Nevada 578/Washington Avenue/D Street. Nevada 578 follows D Street east along the northern tier of the city of Las Vegas before transitioning into a city street. Washington Avenue travels east-west between U.S. 95 Business & Nevada 599 (Rancho Drive) and Bruce Street near Cashman Field (home of the Las Vegas 51's Triple A Baseball franchise). Photos taken 03/29/08 and 10/19/04.
Now on the offramp, a traffic signal for D Street is first, and the connection to Nevada 578/Washington Avenue follows shortly thereafter. Photo taken 10/19/04.
This mileage sign reflects the exits for the city of North Las Vegas: Exit 45A-B, Junction Nevada 147/Lake Mead Boulevard; Exit 46, Junction Nevada 574/Cheyenne Avenue; and Exit 48, Junction Nevada 573/Craig Road. The freeway leaves the city of Las Vegas and enters the city of North Las Vegas. Photo taken 03/29/08.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 45A, Junction Nevada 147 East/Lake Mead Boulevard and Exit 45B, Lake Mead Boulevard west. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Exit 45B is the main route into the city of North Las Vegas, and Nevada 147/Lake Mead Boulevard connects to the civic center of that city. Lake Mead Boulevard is not to be confused with Lake Mead Drive, which is Nevada 564 to the southeast in Henderson. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Northbound Interstate 15 and U.S. 93 reach Exit 45A, Junction Nevada 147/Lake Mead Boulevard east. Nevada 147 crosses the metropolitan area along Lake Mead Boulevard, passes through Sunrise Mountain Natural Area, and culminates its journey upon entering Lake Mead National Recreation Area. There are park roads that connect to Nevada 169 to the north and U.S. 93 to the south. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Immediately thereafter, northbound Interstate 15 and U.S. 93 reach Exit 45B, Lake Mead Boulevard west. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Northbound Interstate 15 and U.S. 93 shields after Exit 45B. The urban speed limit remains 65 miles per hour through this stretch, but some blue logo guide signs are in place north of Exit 45B. Photo taken 03/29/08.

The next exit along Interstate 15 and U.S. 93 is Exit 52, Junction Clark County Route 215. This unusual sign is a bit harder to read than a normal county route pentagon shield since the numbers are compressed into a diamond within the pentagon. This is the only pentagon-shielded route we've seen in Nevada, and it is the only signed county route freeway in Nevada. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Northbound Interstate 15 and U.S. 93 reach Exit 52, Junction Clark County Route 215/Bruce Woodbury Las Vegas Beltway. Clark County Route 215 was completed as an expressway around the west side of the metropolitan area in the early 2000s, but it is not yet a full freeway. Expansion of the expressway to freeway standards is underway in the southwestern quadrant. Upon completion as a freeway, it is possible that this road might be redesignated as an extension of Interstate 215, but if and when that would happen is unclear. Photo taken 03/29/08.
The interchange between Interstate 15 and Clark County Route 215 is a diamond interchange currently, with certain high speed ramps for the connections that don't require flyover ramps. This configuration will change once the beltway is brought up to full freeway standards. Photo taken 03/29/08.

Scenes Pertaining to Interstate 15: Casinos

Interstate 15 parallels the Las Vegas Strip to the west from Interstate 215 northward into downtown Las Vegas. Colorful casino high rises line the eastern skyline of Interstate 15 between McCarran International Airport and the junction with Interstate 515. Pictured below are several of the buildings visible along the freeway. Believe it or not, most of the Las Vegas Strip is not part of the city of Las Vegas and is actually part of unincorporated Clark County (mostly within the community of Paradise).
