Interstate 25 South - Albuquerque

Interstate 25 Southbound
Interstate 25 undulates through downtown Albuquerque with as many as 11 lanes not including the parallel frontage roads. Decorated sound walls line the freeway along some stretches. Interests to the University of New Mexico campus and the Albuquerque Convention Center should use Exit 224B to Dr. Martin Luther King Avenue Jr. Photo taken 06/29/08.
Exit 224B consists of a two-lane off-ramp to both Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Central Avenues. MLK Avenue joins the freeway with University Boulevard/UNM to the east and New Mexico 47 (Broadway Boulevard) to the west. Photo taken 06/29/08.
A half diamond interchange connects with the adjacent frontage roads ahead of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. The parallel roads facilitate movements to Central Avenue (Historic U.S. 66) three blocks to the south. Central Avenue (which also was Business Loop Interstate 40), carries the post-1937 alignment of U.S. 66 east to Exit 167 and west to Exit 149 of Interstate 40. Photo taken 06/29/08.
A handful of high-rises peak over the adjacent wall of Interstate 25 south from downtown Albuquerque. Photo taken 06/29/08.
Exit 224A quickly follows with ramps to Lead Avenue west and Coal Avenue east, a one-way street couplet. Photo taken 06/29/08.
Interstate 25 enters a safety corridor where traffic fines are increased. Photo taken 06/29/08.
The next exit (Avenida Cesar Chavez) serves the University of New Mexico sports complex including the football stadium, arena, and multipurpose fields. Isotopes Park, home of the AAA Baseball Albuquerque Isotopes, also lies along Avenida Cesar Chavez to the east. Photo taken 06/29/08.

One quarter mile north of the diamond interchange with Avenida Cesar Chavez (Exit 223). The east-west arterial connects Interstate 25 with Yale Boulevard to the east of UNM Stadium and Bridge Boulevard (the pre-1937 routing of U.S. 66) west of 4th Street. Photo taken 06/29/08.
Exit 223 leaves Interstate 25 south for Avenida Cesar Chavez. Bridge Boulevard spans the Rio Grande from Barelas to Iseleta Boulevard south (the continuation of Historic U.S. 66). Photo taken 06/29/08.
A parting shot of a southbound Interstate 25 mileage sign from Exit 223. El Paso represents the end of U.S. 85 via Interstate 10. Photo taken 06/29/08.
Mast arm traffic lights posted at the Interstate 25 ramp end with Avenida Cesar Chavez. Bridge Boulevard west from 4th Street across the Barelas Bridge represents old U.S. 85; Bridge Boulevard west to Arenal is former New Mexico 135. Photo taken 06/29/08.
