Interstate 70 - Adams and Arapahoe Counties (Westbound)

Interstate 70/U.S. 36-40 West and U.S. 287 North
Westbound Interstate 70/U.S. 36-40 and Northbound U.S. 287 reaches the left exit for Exit 288, Junction Business Loop I-70 and U.S. 40-287 westbound (Colfax Avenue). While U.S. 40 is included on this freeway sign, U.S. 36 and 287 are conveniently forgotten. U.S. 36 at this interchange continues west with Interstate 70 toward Denver, while U.S. 287 exits off here at Colfax Avenue leading west into Denver. The east end of the business loop is located pretty far east of the urban areas of Denver; the west end is all the way out in Golden, in the foothills. Photo taken 02/02/02.
The two-lane left exit from the eastbound Interstate 70/U.S. 36 freeway leads directly to eastbound Business Loop I-70/U.S. 40-287/Colfax Avenue. Photo taken 02/02/02.
Interstate 70/U.S. 36 West
After the Federico Peņa Boulevard interchange (Exit 284) and the Chambers Road interchange (Exit 283), eastbound Interstate 70 and U.S. 36 approach Exit 282, Junction Interstate 225 south to Aurora and Interstate 25 south. For traffic headed to the Denver Tech Center, Castle Rock, and Colorado Springs, use Interstate 225 south to Interstate 25 south. Most parts of Aurora are also best served by Interstate 225, since the freeway spends most of its route traversing Aurora (which spans two counties, Adams and Arapahoe). This is the first Interstate Highway interchange along westbound Interstate 70 since intersecting Interstate 135 in Salina, Kansas, some 420 miles east of here. Photo taken 08/29/04.
A two-lane exit splits traffic from Interstate 70 westbound to Interstate 225 southbound. Once on the collector-distributor lanes, there is also an exit to Peoria Street. The left three lanes continue west on Interstate 70 and U.S. 36. Photo taken 08/29/04.
These two photos show the signage for Interstate 225 as seen from the mainline of westbound Interstate 70 and as seen from the collector-distributor lanes of westbound Interstate 70. On the collector-distributor lanes, the two left lanes transition onto Interstate 225 south, while the #3 lane continues back to Interstate 70/U.S. 36 west. The right lane becomes exit only for the connection to Peoria Street. Photos taken 08/29/04.

These shields, located on the transition ramp from westbound Interstate 70 to southbound Interstate 225, point the way to the respective routes. The left two lanes connect to southbound Interstate 225, while the right two lanes will merge back onto Interstate 70 after the Peoria Street interchange. Photo taken 08/29/04.
Still on the collector-distributor lanes of westbound Interstate 70, the right lane becomes exit only for Peoria Street, while the left lane will reconnect to westbound Interstate 70. Parallel to Havana Street, Peoria Street offers a more direct route north to Montbello (in Denver city-county) and south into Aurora. Use Peoria Street south to the U.S. Army Garrison at Fitzsimons and Del Mar Circle, the location of a park and shopping center in Aurora. Peoria Street reaches its southern end at Colorado 83/Parker Road near the Interstate 225 interchange. Photo taken 08/29/04.
Traffic on the collector-distributor lanes split: the left lane continues back toward Interstate 70/U.S. 36, while the right lane exits onto Peoria Street. Photo taken 08/29/04.
Here is a view of transition ramp from the collector-distributor lanes back onto the mainline of westbound Interstate 70 and U.S. 36. The freeway exits the city of Aurora in Adams County and enters the city-county of Denver. Photo taken 08/29/04.
