Interstate 215 - Utah

Interstate 215 Utah

These Interstate 215 route markers are posted on northbound Utah 171 (3500 South) in West Valley City. Photo taken 08/28/11 by Garrett Smith.

Routing

Interstate 215/Belt Route provides a bypass route for the city of Salt Lake City. The 28-mile freeway allows Interstate 15 through traffic bound for Odgen or Provo to bypass downtown by use of a 270-degree loop freeway. The southeastern leg of the highway joins Interstate 15 with Interstate 80 at Parleys Canyon.

History

Historically, the southeastern portion of Interstate 215 between Interstate 15 and 80 carried the designation of Interstate 415 between 1962 and 1964. Some older maps show this designation, and the Utah Department of Transportation photo archives verify that the Interstate 415 was briefly signed, specifically on overhead signs. However, since that time, it was decided to make the entire route a consistent corridor, and now the entire belt route is considered part of Interstate 215.
