Northwest Nevada @ AARoads

The map above shows the original, pre-1982 state route numbers in Northwestern Nevada. Many of these routes have been renumbered, but several retain their original numbering. Those routes with their original route numbers are generally unpaved routes that have not been improved to state highway standards. This map also shows the routing of Nevada 8A, which winds its way across Northern Nevada in a variety of routings. The gray route markers are old numbers; the white markers are the current state route numbers. Most unpaved segments have retained their old numbers by default.

Jim Magin traveled to Northwestern Nevada in November 1993. The following pictures document that trip from Reno to Gerlach, a small town near the northern end of Nevada 447. Most of this trip took place along State Route 447 and connecting roads leading to Pyramid Lake.

This was Jim's second trip to Pyramid Lake. On his first trip, he drove a rented Pontiac, but that prevented him from driving on the rough roads that lead to the pyramid itself. On this return trip, he rented a four wheel drive pick-up truck so he could drive all the way to the pyramid.

Northbound Nevada 447 entering Gerlach. This is about as far as one can get from any other civilization in Nevada and possibly in the continental U.S. The Texaco station is the only gas within a huge three-state radius, which includes parts of extreme northeastern California and southern Oregon.
