Utah 34 and Business Loop I-15

Routing

Utah 34 is a short, east-west state highway that follows St. George Boulevard between Utah 18 and Interstate 15 within the city of St. George. The entire route is cosigned with Business Loop I-15, but route markers in the field may vary between one or both shields.

History

All of Utah 34 was part of U.S. 91, which was eliminated in 1974 in favor of Interstate 15 and a series of state highways, mostly in urban areas. Through the St. George area, U.S. 91 entered the state from Arizona via Mohave County Route 91, curved onto Old Highway 91, Utah 8/Sunset Boulevard (Santa Clara Drive), turned south on Utah 18/Bluff Street, then turned east on Business Loop I-15 and Utah 34/St. George Boulevard past Interstate 15 to Red Cliffs Drive. Old U.S. 91 then paralleled Interstate 15 on the east side of the freeway, traveling northeast via Red Cliffs Drive and Telegraph Street (a portion of which is designated as Utah 212) from St. George into Washington, connecting to Utah 9.

Highway Guide

Business Loop I-15 and Utah 34/St. George Boulevard east
Eastbound Utah 34 and Northbound Business Loop I-15 at 300 West, which is three blocks west of Main Street. Utah 34 follows the original route of U.S. 91 through St. George, but U.S. 91 did not follow Utah 18 south. Instead, U.S. 91 took Utah 18 north, and then it left Utah 18 in Santa Clara to go southwest around the Virgin River Gorge. Photo taken 10/24/03.
The next traffic signal is at Main Street, which connects to the Mormon Temple as well as Dixie State College. Photo taken 10/24/03.

Now approaching Interstate 15, Utah 34 approaches its eastern terminus. It is a very short route and is an urban arterial for its entire length. Business Loop I-15 also meets its northern end here. Photo taken 10/24/03.

Utah 34 reaches its western terminus at the traffic signal with Utah 18/Bluff Street. Business Loop I-15 turns left at this traffic signal to make its way back to Interstate 15. Continuing straight through this traffic light will lead to the former St. George airport. Photo taken 10/24/03.
