Photos taken from our travels across the United States. Albums cover a variety of highway imagery including signs, bridges, interchanges, traffic control devices and other infrastructure. Archived albums cover photos taken during the early years of the site, or photos showing stretches of highway before widening or major reconstruction, or an old alignment.
This album looks at both the original Woodrow Wilson Bridge approach and crossing of the Potomac River during early work of the 2002-09 replacement project, and I-495 north from the Springfield Interchange (I-95/395) to McLean. Started in 2008, the 495 ExpressLanes project revised all interchanges along the Capital Beltway between I-395 and Old Dominion Drive at McLean. Completed on November 17, 2012, work expanded the beltway to 12 overall lanes (eight general purpose and four toll lanes).
I-95 and I-495 north before and during construction associated with the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project. Underway between 2002 and 2009, work replaced the Potomac River bridge and rebuilt the beltway between the Eisenhower Connector and MD 210 (Indian Head Highway).
Through Northern Virginia, photos show I-495 before the addition of the express toll lanes. The toll lane project ran from 2008 to November 17, 2012. It revised all interchanges along the beltway between Old Dominion Drive at McLean and the Springfield Interchange. Work expanded the beltway to 12 overall lanes (eight general purpose, four express lanes).
