Updates August 17, 2020 – Minnesota, North Carolina

Made good progress in going through the backlog for North Carolina over the course of August thus far. Finally posted the last of the photos covering North Carolina Interstates, and finished going through everything covered statewide east of I-95, and east of I-77 with the exception to U.S. 421 through Lillington. That leaves just U.S. and State Route coverage in [...]

Updates July 28, 2020 – Florida, North Carolina

Still not traveling much, though did make a daytrip to the Big Bend of Florida, checking out some state roads from Steinhatchee north to Live Oak and west to Madison. Entered South Georgia briefly, only my third state visited of 2020. AARoads site updates continue to focus on our large backlog for North Carolina. Also posted some photos shot on July 22 on the aforementioned [...]

Updates July 15-18, 2020 – North Carolina

A planned trip to the Mid-Atlantic was postponed due to COVID19, so took the opportunity to at least catch up on more of the photo backlog in North Carolina and Virginia from previous trips through the region. We have several thousand photos from both states dating back to 2013 that have yet to make the site. Plus a number of pages, some untouched since 2005, that needed attention. Still a [...]

U.S. 74 – Shelby, NC Bypass

Carter took some photos recently along U.S. 74 eastbound at the new Shelby Bypass currently under construction. The interstate standard freeway will eventually shift U.S. 74 north onto a freeway around the Cleveland County seat, connecting with the U.S. 74 freeway around Kings Mountain further east. When completed, U.S. 74 will provide a seamless freeway between Interstates 26 and 85. Split into six sections, the first contracts for work on [...]

The newest North Carolina Interstates

The Tar Heel state continues to lead the nation in proposing and developing new Interstate corridors. Additions approved by AASHTO in 2016 alone designated Interstates 42, 87 and 587. These join ongoing progress or long range plans for Interstates 73, 274, 285, 785, 295, 795, etc. We drove across North Carolina last month and checked out progress on a number of projects: Interstate 42 will run east from I-40 at [...]

Fayetteville Outer Loop Progress – January 2017

Among the many future Interstate corridors designated across the state of North Carolina, the one gaining perhaps the most headway is the Fayetteville Outer Loop. Designated as Future Interstate 295, and signed in the field as North Carolina 295, the new beltway is roughly two thirds of the way complete with the December 2, 2016 opening of a segment west from NC 24 & 87 (Bragg Boulevard) to the All [...]

Interstate Completion Watchlist

The often delayed interchange between Interstate 65 and the new Interstate 22 in north Birmingham is finally nearing completion. Although now 18 months behind schedule from the October 2014 target date, final paving along the two mile stretch between Coalburg Road and I-65 should be finished by June. A video story on the project: Finishing touches on I-22 in Birmingham Section 5 of Interstate 69 will be substantially complete by [...]

Updates and Road News for the week of January 25

Well no big snowstorm this week, at least for the east coast. The western U.S. however is receiving a large storm system, with heavy rains and mountain snows. Rainy now across #SierraNevada passes but that'll change this evening as snow levels drop. Plan ahead! #cawx pic.twitter.com/x3omK3JV2t — NWS Sacramento (@NWSSacramento) January 29, 2016 Now on to the road news and updates for this week at AARoads. Today we completed adding [...]

Signs of construction along U.S. 25 northbound near East Flat Rock south of Hendersonville Ccompare this scene with this 2007 view. Widening of the two-lane highway is underway to bring it up to four-lane Interstate standards. At-grade intersections with Kay Road and other residential roads will be handled by a new frontage [...]

Two years more in the making, Interstate 485 grows again

Barricades were removed on the latest stretch of Interstate 485 to open for motorists in the northern Charlotte area yesterday. What was expected to be completed in March 2007 opened without any fanfare by midday between North Carolina 16 (Brookshire Boulevard) and Interstate 77 / North Carolina 115 (Old Statesville Road). The 5.5 mile stretch completes the northwest quadrant of the Charlotte beltway, leaving the unconstructed northeast quadrant as the [...]
