California 142 is a 11.4 mile route across the Chino Hills between Brea in Orange County and Chino in San Bernardino County. The state route stems north from California 90 along Valencia Avenue, a four-lane arterial connecting with Lambert Road. Carbon Canyon Road extends California 142 east from there initially with four lanes before narrowing along a winding course northeast through Carbon Canyon.

Crossing the county line at Sleepy Hollow, California 142 (Carbon Canyon Road) continues northward to Western Hills Country Club and a series of switchbacks. The state route lowers to meet Chino Hills Parkway, a four to five-lane boulevard taking California 142 east through residential areas of Chino Hills. The east end is located at a split diamond interchange with California 71 (Chino Valley Freeway) along the Chino city line.

SR 142 was designated in 1959 over what was SR 274. An unconstructed extension of SR 142 leads nine miles northeast from SR 71 through Montclair to what was SR 30 along Baseline Road.
