Well damn, that bites.
Hopefully their foundation stays strong throughout this.
People get divorced from long term marriages all the time. The only reason this is news is because of the money involved.
I'm not that surprised, Bill Gates is gonna benefit from an upcoming railroad merger. If it goes through, that is.
Their youngest child is 18. Makes me wonder if they've just been tolerating each other until she was legally an adult.
Hopefully the B&M Gates Foundation can find a new headquarters campus if it gets balkanized. It's one of the worst uses of land in Downtown Seattle: a suburban-style lowrise campus right between the Seattle Center and SLU.
Half
They said they will continue to run the Gates Foundation together. We'll see.
Agree that the Foundation is not really a great use of that real estate. They don't do much with the arts.

What's worse than bad land use? Vacant and unused...
I'm more interested in how the under the couch cushions corners of the Internet spin this as part of his plan for world domination or claim he can't actually get divorced because he wasn't really married on account that he's not human but is a prototype for a cyborg he turned himself into 40 years ago or some shit.

Jumping the gun, man! Even after they file for divorce there's a year wait for the judge and then a 90 day waiting period after that, even if they agree on all issues.

Not much of a problem for a high-demand market like Downtown Seattle, though we are still picking away at the last remaining surface parking lots.
The Gates Foundation campus occupies more than four blocks of space that would be nice for some more housing, or an extension of the Seattle Center.

Gates used to be a huge asshole as well. He seems like he maybe mellowed out some after he stepped away from Microsoft and focused on philanthropic work, but he got where he was in life by screwing over a lot of people.

I don't agree with either take. The Gates Foundation sits on the site of a former parking lot, and was lauded by all involved when the site was chosen 15 years ago. It is an urban design masterpiece, and the buildings are easily some of the most eco-friendly in the city. It is low-rise to not compete with the Space Needle, and sits on four blocks to accommodate future growth. I don't see how you can seriously improve on that when you have hundreds of surface lots littering the city. Never mind the current state of Seattle Center, which is hardly remarkable.

My best guess - she's a pure gold-digger and he's a nerdy simp who is planning to donate nearly his entire fortune to charity (a la John D. Rockefeller), leaving a million or so to her and each of the kids.
No pre-nup? This is going to be fun to follow.

I kind of doubt that–they met at Microsoft, have been married since the 90s, they run their own charity, and Melinda's involved in it–the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. If she was just a gold-digger she would have checked out years ago.

You maybe didn't know that Melinda was also an early employee of Microsoft and was worth a couple of billion on her own when she and Bill got married. Neither of them had any reason to get married except love.
They've already left several million to each of their kids.
The decision to leave most of their money to their foundation was made decades ago. I see both of them wanted to settle as calmly and quietly as possible.
I was watching Wendy Williams this morning (it comes on after morning news...don't judge), and she was laying into Bill for apparently having a thing with Ann Winblad. They dated some time ago, but apparently have maintained a relationship where he visits her once per year. No way to know if it was sexual or perhaps a reason for the divorce, but apparently Melinda was accepting of it. At least early on, when Walter Isaacson wrote an article on the couple in 1997.
Williams also said that the kids are more on Melinda's side.

Sides? So much for a drama-free divorce.
I don't think anybody, even Wendy Williams (whoever she is) knows what's going on in a couple's relationship except the couple themselves.

Obviously it'll be awhile before we know for sure whether anyone is taking sides. No more than rumour at this point, thankfully.
