Title: April 2024 Bakersfield Road Meet
Post by: Max Rockatansky on May 14, 2023, 04:00:58 PM
Updating the original post for the official itinerary.  Closer to the meet I will post Google Map links to make all of these easy to follow like we did in Fresno last year.

Meet Start

Location:  9 AM at the McDonald's off I-5 Exit 257
Address:  20700 Tracy Avenue, Buttonwillow, CA
-  There are numerous other food options at Exit 257 such as Carl's Junior, Starbucks, El Taco Loco and a couple off brand or gas station options.  We will meet for an hour as group before heading out on the road.  There might be an opportunity for some to group up beforehand and leave their cars at the TA Travel Center but I wouldn't count on that.

Leg 1:  the new alignment of California State Route 58 along I-5, Stockdale Highway, West Side Parkway and the Centennial Corridor
-  The directions here are pretty straight forward.  We will depart Buttonwillow on I-5 south which multiplexes eastbound CA 58 to Exit 253 at Stockdale Highway.  Upon departing Stockdale Highway, we will follow CA 58 east through West Side Parkway and the Centennial Corridor interchange to CA 99.

Leg 2:  CA 204 and former US Route 99
-  From the Centennial Corridor the meet tour will continue on eastbound CA 58 to Exit 112 onto CA 204/Union Avenue.  CA 204 continues north onto Golden State Avenue which was part of a 1930s era realignment of US Route 99 out of downtown Bakersfield.  Union Avenue also carried US Route 399 to a terminus at US Route 466 Sumner Avenue.  US Route 99 and US Route 466 multiplexed Golden State Avenue towards Famoso where the latter split towards Cholame.  The tour will briefly detour off CA 204 to Graces Circle which was part of the 1930s at Chester Avenue.  Graces Circle is one of the earliest traffic circles in California and was an improvement to the early US Route 99 corridor along Chester Avenue.  The tour will continue on CA 204 and use Exit 6 to onto southbound Airport Drive.

Leg 3:  The Bakersfield Sign
-  From Exit 6 at CA 204 the tour will follow Airport Drive, Buck Owens Boulevard and Sillect Avenue to the Bakersfield Sign located at Buck Owens Crystal Palace (2800 Buck Owens Boulevard).  The Bakersfield Sign (we will have the meet photo here) was one located on US Route 99/US Route 399 along Union Avenue and was somewhat recently restored.  Buck Owens Boulevard was also part of Legislative Route Number 141 which functionally was the precursor corridor to the freeway now occupied by CA 99.

Leg 4:  Downtown Bakersfield to Hart Park via Alfred Harrell Highway.
-  From the Bakersfield Sign the tour will head towards Hart Park.  The tour will follow southbound Buck Owens Boulevard, eastbound 24th Street (former CA 178), eastbound 23rd Street (former CA 178), the CA 178 Freeway to Exit 5 at Mt. Vernon Avenue, Mount Vernon Avenue north to the start of Alfred Harrell Highway at China Grade and eastbound Alfred Harrell Highway to Hart Park.  24th and 23rd in downtown were part of CA 178 until it was truncated to M Street in 2011.  The China Grade portion of Alfred Harrell Highway was part of the Stockton-Los Angeles Road which the major north/south wagon route bypassing the Central Valley during the 1850s.  Alfred Harrell Highway is a Kern County maintained freeway which was completed in the late 1950s and is one of the strangest I've found.  The freeway portion of Alfred Harrell Highway ends at Hart Park (the park sign is another good group photo opportunity).

Leg 5:  Hart Park to Lake Isabella
-  From Hart Park the tour will continue east on the expressway portion of Alfred Harrell Highway to CA 178.  The tour will continue east on CA 178 along the Kern Canyon Highway to the community of Lake Isabella.  The Kern Canyon Highway was completed in the late 1920s as a State Highway replacement for Caliente-Bodfish Road and is highly scenic.  The tour will use CA 178 Exit 43 to Kernville Road (the same exit for CA 155).

Leg 6:  Caliente-Bodfish Road
-  From Lake Isabella the tour will follow Lake Isabella Boulevard (former CA 178) to Caliente-Bodfish Road (County Road 483).  Caliente-Bodfish Road is among the more scenic mountain roads in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains and passes through the original Kern Seat of Havilah.  Caliente-Bodfish Road ends at the community of Caliente which is surrounded on three sides by the Union Pacific Railroad (formerly Southern Pacific).

Leg 7:  The Tehachapi Loop
-  From Caliente the tour will follow Bealville Road south to CA 58 and turn east.  The tour will follow CA 58 east to Tehachapi-Woodford Road at Exit 139.  Tehachapi-Woodford Road is the original alignment of CA 58 and ascends to the Tehachapi Loop.  The Tehachapi Loop has numerous train coil overs which happen in short intervals given the volume of freight traffic.

The meet will officially end at the Tehachapi Loop.  The location will provide many additional options for the group to disperse such as:

-  Continuing east on former US 466 to Tehachapi and possibly clinching CA 202.
-  Stopping at Cesar Chavez National Monument on Tehachapi-Woodford Road.
-  Backtracking west on CA 58 or CA 223.
-  Returning to Caliente and drive Caliente Creek Road which was part of the Havilah Stage Road (which is probably what I will do).

That sounds rather interesting, and I'll definitely put it on my calendar.  My parents lived in Bakersfield from 2010 to 2012 while my dad worked for the City of Taft, so I know a little bit about it already.  Could be fun to see what's changed.

I would be very interested, but I will likely be hosting my 2024 "city meet" (location to be announced) around the same general timeframe as this.  I rather like the late-April/early-May timeframe for hosting my meets, but I will try to avoid the same date as your meet.

your city can be Bakersfield!

Put me as interested!

If I plan ahead a little more, should be able to come this time. Was bummed to miss out on Fresno.

Just saw this (I don't normally read this group). Potentially interested; I"ve blocked the date on my calendar. Please keep me informed (but remember I don't read this group normally).

I'm committed to doing this meet at this point.  I'll keep you in the loop as I think that a couple of the west coasters in general were just finding out about this tonight.

Due to a recent life event for me likely coming to fruition for me during May I bumped the Bakersfield Meet day up to 4/13.  I don't believe anyone has fully committed to this meet yet so I wanted to get an update in before that happened.  I am floating doing a second day on the 14th on the Old Ridge Route (US 99) from Grapevine Village to the site of Tumble Inn.  During the course of the week I'll be refining the 4/13 tour route slightly based of my test run of the West Side Parkway last month.

April 13 may make this a tad harder for me to attend, especially if I end up traveling east for the eclipse earlier that week. If I don't fly east to see the eclipse, it's weekend trip range provided we don't get a late-season storm, so not like I need to plan much in advance. I'm definitely interested provided I'm not out east.

Right now, I think I am going to end up choosing New Orleans over this meet mainly because my parents want to do the Charlotte one.

I'll mark this on my calendar and try to get everyone I have to help out around here to keep that time free. This fits into a couple of trips I've wanted to take starting in SoCal, including driving the San Andreas Fault from Cajon Pass to the Carrizo Plain.

Having completed that circuit myself you might want to add Bitterwater Road and CA 25 onto that.  By the time April rolls around all those mountains will be green.

I second CA 25. Not only does it follow the fault, it's one of the quietest roads in the entire state highway system south of Pinnacles.

Out of curiosity, are we still looking at Buttonwillow as the meet start location? Not that it makes a huge difference to me, but that could be incentive for me to grab a hotel along I-5 instead of in Bakersfield.

Yes, that had some reasonable options for food.  I'll be formalizing the itinerary sometime after the Centennial Corridor dedication.  Out of curiosity what was your end goal for clinches related to this trip?

Good question, because I haven't decided yet. I have nothing in the area apart from the open parts of 58, 99, and 178, so I (along with others) should get new mileage regardless. Definitely wouldn't turn down another drive up Kern Canyon, because I saw that was proposed.

My thinking was that if the tour route goes down to Havilah and ends around there that people in the meet would have the option to backtrack to Lake Isabella or push forward to Caliente.  CA 155 certainly is up for the grabs somewhat organically heading north from the end of the meet.

I'm still interested in the meet, health permitting. I won't be at the New Orleans meet, but warmer weather and more daylight makes Bakersfield doable. I'm also unlikely to attempt eclipse watching (took a pass on the 2017 eclipse, too).

On lodgings, I'm not sure anything at the I-5 exit for Buttonwillow would work for me. But there are better hotels near the Bakersfield airport and along the Westside Parkway, that would be within reach of Buttonwillow.

My local clinching interests are of course the Centennial Corridor, as well as the Alfred Harrell Highway, and a relocated segment of CA 180 east of Fresno I forgot about during my return home from a college reunion last October. My outbound and return itineraries are TBD, other than leaving home right after Easter, returning around the end of April, and minimizing severe weather risks crossing the Great Plains (mindful of Scott5114's advice in another thread about traveling across Kansas and Oklahoma in April and May (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=27276.msg2586410#msg2586410)).

I'm liking that itinerary. Nice mix of old and new and not super long. I'll probably book my hotel in Bakersfield this week.

And yes, decent chance I do the CA 202 clinch after the meet. TBD what else I do on my way down/back.

One point I'll probably have to refine is the parking situation at the Bakersfield Sign.  There is a couple restaurants nearby (just to the south) that probably are the best/shortest option.

My thought is to just have a brief picnic/restroom break at Hart Park.  I'm not anticipating the meet going far enough into the afternoon that a full on sit down lunch would be necessary.  There is a couple fast food options in Lake Isabella we can stop at before heading south for the final two legs.  Right now things are pretty flexible given there won't be a large attendance number and we two months out.

Is the meet plan to sit down and eat breakfast at the McD's, or rather grab breakfast there or somewhere else at that exit (like the Carl's Jr., which isn't anywhere near where I live) and eat on the run?

And I don't mind it one bit. If there's enough time to socialize while eating or elsewhere on the tour, why have a big sit-down lunch? Reno will likely be counter serve (though not necessarily a chain) for exactly this reason.

Carl's has burgers for breakfast, which would make me happy.

Maybe if we do another Reading, PA, Meet, we can have a meal at the Bojangles on US 222 BUS.  I think Adam Prince is too sophisticated with restaurants to do one as part of a NC Meet.

Really the McDonald's is just a place to gather and hang out as a group for a hour.  I'm probably inclined to grab something from Carl's Jr. myself.

Speaking of lunch, if everyone wants that it looks like the best bet is the 178 Bar & Grill (even highway themed) at Lake Isabella.  They have decent reviews and I liked what I had the one time I ate there.  A good meal probably being placed right before Caliente-Bodfish Road probably would be ideal.

Put lunch at 178 Bar & Grill as tentative in the itinerary.  I'm game up a quick grab and go in the morning followed by a solid sit down lunch if everyone else is.

I have a hotel booked in Bakersfield, so I guess I'm officially "in". Looking forward to an excuse to see more of the southern Sierra and San Joaquin Valley.

As I said when you came over to my office; if you want to drive out to Northridge, I'll be glad to give you a ride. You just have to endure me killing off a few podcasts along the way :-) Drop me an email at work or at home and we can coordinate.

I think I finalized my plans to get to Bakersfield so I'll go ahead and RSVP!

My current plan is to leave the Bay Area the night before the road meet and book a hotel room in Hollister. I'll also drive the part of CA 156 I haven't been on and check out the new turbo roundabout at the CA 25 intersection. Then on the way to Bakersfield clinch CA 25 and take CA 198 to get to I-5.

Any rough estimates for how long this shindig will last? Just curious about how much time I should expect to have free in the PM (and if I should thus move my Saturday night hotel elsewhere).

Probably 2:30-3:00PM factoring drive time and stopping to look at things.  Based off who I know for sure is going I don't foresee a need for a formal sit down meal at Lake Isabella which will keep the pace snappy.

I'll have Google Map links up probably a day or two before the meet.  That worked out really well last year and this time around is many of the same faces.

There is plenty of options at Lake Isabella we can all grab as we regroup for the final legs of the meet.  I'm hoping to get Caliente Creek Road in myself after the meets at the Tehachapi Loop.

I like stopping at the 178 Bar and Grill in Lake Isabella before the final legs of the tour, though it sounds like I might be outvoted on that one.

I'm on my way, right now in SW Kansas, with a zigzagging itinerary arriving at my hotel room in Bakersfield (staying two nights) on Friday the 12th. Post-meet plans TBD.

On the Google Maps links, can they be included in a post here, or otherwise webposted? That's the best way for me to use a hotel printer to run off my own copy. I've had about zero luck plugging a thumb drive into a hotel printer, to move stuff from my laptop to the printer.

Starting to get reliable forecasts for Saturday. Looking like a disturbance will come in Friday night, with meet day being around 70 and windy in the valley. Small chance of showers. Snow level should be well above the passes in the region, but keep that and the potential for high wind in mind if you're driving in from elsewhere (like I am).

Honestly, I'd take that over the mid-80s and sunny the valley will be seeing on Friday.

Good thing I went to the RenFaire on Sunday :-)

The preliminary forecast I'm seeing has .17 inches of rain starting possibly around 5-6 PM.  The weather should be warm enough that lower elevations won't get snow.  None of the meet route crosses 4,000 feet above sea level.  The highest point is somewhere near Havilah on Caliente-Bodfish Road.

I'm keeping an eye on things regardless.  The later legs can be adjusted if needed.  We likely won't encounter anything of note in urban Bakersfield.

Tejon Pass shouldn't be anywhere nearly as cold as it would need to be for snow based off what I'm seeing

Tejon should be fine. Snow levels in the Reno area will be around 5,000 feet that morning per the government agency intel I have access to and Tejon is expected to be warmer.

I've been monitoring the forecast.  The latest on wunderground is showing about .50 inches of rain starting around midday Saturday into the afternoon around Bakersfield.  Lake Isabella has a current forecast showing about .40 inches of rain.

If needed, I have a couple ideas lined up if the weather is too hazardous east of Hart Park on CA 178.

Idea 1:  Head south on CA 184 and Wheeler Ridge Road to check out some ruins of the Old Ridge Route in Grapevine Village.
Idea 2:  Head south on CA 184 and east on Edison Highway/Bena Road (Old US 466) towards Caliente. This would allow access to the Tehachapi Loop through much less rugged terrain.  Bena Road this time of year is pretty scenic with all the greenery.

Post by: cl94 on April 10, 2024, 01:53:21 AM
Both of those are good ideas that I hope we don't need. I'd be down for either, though I did plan to revisit the Grapevine area either Friday PM or first thing Saturday for pictures.

Latest excessive rainfall outlook for Saturday has marginal risk along the central coast, none elsewhere. That could make things interesting for any of us planning to head north via 101/etc after the meet. Snow lines still looking high enough that they are unlikely to be a factor for the area passes, apart from maaaaaybe Walker if temps are on the low end of expected, but rockfall may be an issue.

I'm going to put this here to give advanced notice:

Looking at the itinerary it's looking to be a busy day, on top of getting to Bakersfield! Ofc I want to drive the new CA 58 corridor, but sometime after Leg 3 or 4 I prefer to park my car and go with someone else for the rest of the road meet. Time isn't really a constraint for me, we could hash it out when we meet up.

(although I might detour to see Route 202 and Business 58)

Tehachapi Willow Springs Rd
Continue onto 90th St W
Turn right onto CA-138 W
Turn left onto 110th St W
Continue onto Johnson Rd
Turn left onto Elizabeth Lake Rd
Turn right onto San Francisquito Canyon Rd

Forest Rte 5N27 turns slightly right and becomes San Francisquito Canyon Rd

Thence back to Northridge

Rain is probably the bigger concern at the elevations involved, but this storm is supposed to be shadowed a bit more than typical. Little is expected to spill across the Sierra crest in the Tahoe area.

San Francisquito Canyon is indeed one of the ideas I had for post-meet. Doubt I'll get that far south, but I would definitely like to get to one of the SoCal wildflower regions this weekend. The bloom down south is much better than we're getting up in NorCal.

Yep, I'll likely be on site in Buttonwillow a little early myself.

We meet up at 9 AM and depart at 10 AM.  Including myself we have six people confirmed.  I'll be in a red Subaru Impreza with steel rims if anyone is looking for me at Buttonwillow.

Having a look at a more finalized forecast it appears the rain will be arriving at about 2 PM in Bakersfield and will probably hit Lake Isabella an hour later.  Both Tejon Pass and Tehachapi Pass aren't anticipated to receive snow.

Speaking of which, the last two days of my trip to Bakersfield were unkind to my Subie's windshield. What started as a small star fracture in an inconspicuous location, from a mystery small rock strike in SW Arizona, grew to about a foot long and keeps growing.

I'm comfortable driving with it for a few days, while I can figure out where to get the windshield replaced (which might be in my next destination, TBD, rather than Bakersfield). But other people might be uncomfortable riding with me and having to look through my damaged windshield.

I have made it to Bakersfield, with my pilgrimage to the intersection of Inyo and Butte completed earlier this evening. While I was afraid that my Subaru was going to get damaged on Elkhorn (Grade) Road in Carrizo Plain NM this afternoon, I appear to have escaped without damage.

Fair chance I'll ask for photos.  I mentioned Elkhorn Grade a lot when I did Soda Lake Road on GN.  Elkhorn will have to wait until I get a high clearance vehicle or get my mountain bike out to Carrizo Plain National Monument.

Right now I probably couldn't even tell if I had windshield damage.  All the bugs have been hatching the Central Valley this week.  Having the weather cool down tomorrow might stave the worst of it off west of Bakersfield.

I have a few Elkhorn photos. Road was so bad that I didn't feel comfortable taking many, but I have some. High clearance is necessary with how bad some of the erosion is, and some of those bumps sneak up on you, even at 10-15 MPH. Several places are little more than tire tracks, though I did see a few other vehicles.

And yes, bugs started showing up en masse in Reno this week. My car is covered. Shame my car wash doesn't have any locations in Bakersfield, else I'd have gotten a wash this evening.

Depending on where you end up, and the age of your Subaru (i.e., do you have do deal with readjusting Eyesight sensors), it would either be a nearby Safelite location or the local Subaru dealership. Just make sure the window is water-tight.

As for getting the Subaru washed, there should be a rainstorm to take care of that. Shortly after we got my first Subaru (a 2016 Impreza, now with 43K miles we're passing to my daughter), we drove across I-10 to Scottsdale, and got caught in a haboob. New car was covered in dirt and dust. The car wash in Scottsdale took care of that, and the Subaru dealer changed the air filter for us.

This will be the first roadtrip for my new Subaru -- it has under 600 miles on it right now.

If you're going with Safelite, 1) they'll do it with your insurance so it won't cost as much, 2) schedule ahead to where you're going so they can have the windshield there when you arrive.  That'll make the replacement relatively fast (I know as I've had to replace several windshields in three different cars over the past two decades due to the rocks on the roads here), maybe an hour tops.

All, have fun today.  I wish I could've made it, but personal circumstances (getting laid off in the middle of February and getting a new, better job in the middle of March) got in the way.

Got to Buttonwillow a little early with how fast traffic was flowing on I-5.  I'm at the McDonald's lot north of the I-5 button copy sign along Tracy Avenue.

Just got back home from the meet.  We managed to get the full tour route in minutes before the storm got to Tehachapi Pass.  I'll be sending meet photos to everyone who was in attendance today (thanks for coming, great to put some new faces to known names) and organizing an album.

Thanks for hosting! That easily goes down as one of my favorite meet tours. Cool sites, great scenery, and a few names that I can finally put faces to.

Crosstrek. Or, in other words, the smallest vehicle on the market with decent ground clearance.

What a day! As Max mentioned there was a rainstorm coming towards us but we finished the whole road tour before it started to rain. I managed to avoid the storm in the morning (I stayed in Hollister for the night) but had to drive back home in the storm. I made it back 2 hours ago. Like last year's road meet I enjoyed this one so much. I only took a few photos, so I appreciate looking thru the photo album.

Oh and me and cahwyguy had to wait for a freight train to pass the railroad crossing at the Caliente Post office,  We had to wait 3-5 minutes for countless train cars to pass

nice. I probably did get shorted some $$$ but knowing the filter was dirty in mine I changed it anyway.

The rain started just after we left the loop, and we had pockets of heavy rain and wind as we went down Tehachapi-Willow Springs/90th St W, 110th St/Johnson, and San Francisquito Canyon Road. On the plus side, we got to go past where the St. Francis Dam collapse was. We got back to Northridge around 6:15 PM.

The funny thing was that I was playing with the "Auto Shutoff Engine at Lights". Mostly I disabled the feature, finding it a pain (or controlled it via brake pressure). But at this point I had the feature enabled, and was pressing hard on the brake -- and for whatever reason, the one time I might have liked it to shutoff the engine -- it didn't.

One thing I try to do on my pages is have pictures of the naming signs together with the picture of the person. @M3100 was trying to get them for me, but I know he didn't get them all. Looking at the pages, here's what I have for the naming signs I should have. ✔ indicates I have the naming sign. If you got pictures of other naming signs, or have ones not on the list, please send me links to the photos or post them. Thanks!

Thanks for organizing a great itinerary for this meet. Lots of interesting roads, cool drives, and great scenery. I didn't take a whole lot of photos, so I'll definitely be looking through your album.

I was really glad we beat the storm and got the full tour in to Tehachape Loop. Pretty much my whole drive back towards northern California after that (I'm returning to Reno this morning) was in moderate-to-heavy rain.

A memorable first meet for me, and happy to finally put some faces to names I've seen here forever.
