I've always automatically knew it meant Grand.

That is because you are from Michigan.

hbelkins

I'm not from Michigan, yet I knew the first time I saw signage for "Gd Rapids" that it referred to Grand Rapids.

I just think that's an odd word to abbreviate. I can see "bridge," "street," "road," even "saint" or "mount" or "mountain" abbreviated, but not "grand."

The only other similar abbreviation I can think of is "spgs" for "springs," commonly used in West Virginia.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Max Rockatansky

Almost everyone who saw the signage you all are referring to when I went to high school in Lansing referred to it as "Goddamn Rapids"  and "Goddamn River."

Hunty2022

Joining in on the Abbreviations, I used to think that "SR"  for State Route or Secondary Route, meant "Senior" ... I sure love Senior 20!

I swear there was someone on the forum who talked about "Colorado Spaghettis". Can't remember who said that, or if it happened at all.

Edit: oh, I said that.

I like chicken strips very greatly, but I'm not calling for them to be added to the zip code system.

I'm sure that this would improve the United States Postal System greatly.  Maybe we should turn all of the post offices into a [insert your favorite fried chicken palace here].

How about when you look up any route like "VA-20"  or "NC-33" , but the results end up being something completely different, like some random fighter jet?

Or Arkansas State Highway 15.

I'd love to fly in a State Route 71 though

I think the seemingly increasing amount of people misusing "your"  and "you're"  is because they're both abbreviated "ur"  in text speak.

I think that's more because they're dumb, myself.

With the advent of autocorrect I actually see less text speak these days than I did in the past. Emojis, however, confuse and terrify me. Most of them have a hidden second meaning (example: "🍆 parmesan" probably wouldn't go over the way you'd think it would) and I live in fear that I'll send a message I don't mean to by using the emoji with the wrong connotations.

Emojis are just dumb to begin with. Other than a simple thumbs-up to affirm something, what can you communicate with emojis that you can't easily communicate with words?
