The "what counts as a state clinch" stuff going on in another thread inspired this post. Basically, how many states have you been to if you go by each the various "rules." First I started off with the typical criteria you'd see brought up in one of those debates, then I added a bunch of transportation related stuff for the hell of it. Feel free to add any other categories you want.

Not entirely certain; subtract maybe two or three. Only spent a single night in Rhode Island, for sure. Alaska, I've only stayed over one night on land, but I have slept on a ship plying inland waters during consecutive nights. Might be another state or two where I've only spent a single night, but it's not occurring to me.

Well, not AK unless you count bicycles. Maybe another 5-8 that I haven't personally operated a vehicle in (but definitely was a passenger in all of those).

You know what, I'm gonna go ahead and stop there with the categories...I obviously don't have my data collected as well as I thought! But I can add a few other tidbits:

-I've had permanent residences in three states: PA, NY and MA.

-In three other states I've spent a month or longer, consecutively, in a single location: CO, TX and CA (and I'm actually not certain I have a solid consecutive month in CA).

-In the following additional states I've stayed a week or more in a single location: AL, AZ, DE, FL, MD, MS, NH, NJ, OK (two locations), TN (two locations), WV. In several others I've spent as much as a week but in different locations every day or so.

-In the following states I've only stayed overnight at one location: AK (again, excluding overnights at sea), DE (but for a whole week), ME (one town, different buildings, widely separate occasions), MN, ND, RI, VT

-I've entered NJ on foot without stepping on land.

-I've been to six Canadian provinces: BC, NB, NL, NS, ON, QC. I've stayed overnight in all but NL and NS (and my overnight in NB was on board a ship in port).

-I've crossed the border by road in BC (AK, WA), ON (MI, NY), and QC (NY). I've entered QC without reporting to a border station (or being required to). I've crossed by rail in BC (AK). I've crossed on foot in ON (NY). I have visited NB, NL and NS only by sea.

NJ-DE.  Due to some rule back in the 1600's (I forget offhand...Google it if you care), Delaware's jurisdiction includes all of the Delaware River for a 12 mile radius around New Castle, DE.  So by standing on the bank of the Delaware River on the NJ side of the river, you can stick your hand over the water and it will be in Delaware. Jump in the water, and you're in Delaware.  Because the border doesn't change, but land formations do, some sediment has built up on the Jersey side of the Delaware, but it's still considered the jurisdiction of Delaware.  Unless he walked across the Del Mem Bridge, I'm guessing this is how Steve walked NJ-DE.

There has been numerous fights by NJ to try to claim their half of the Delaware as NJ.  It's failed in the courts every time. 

PA & NJ's border is the more typical split down the middle (or nearly the middle) of the river.  For the most part, the relationship appears to be much friendlier.  Either state's police/fire/marine units will handle any incidents on either side of the river as necessary.

There are at least two spots where you can walk from New Jersey onto land located in Delaware: http://goo.gl/maps/49RDn  (One is near the center of the image above Fort Delaware, the other is near the bottom.)

as James Bay is part of Nunavut, you can walk into the water and clinch it from Quebec.

Depends on whether Nunavut's waters include every square centimeter of James Bay, or stop short of the shoreline.  Some islands in the middle of the bay belong to Nunavut, per the Nunavut Act (1993), which includes "the islands in Hudson Bay, James Bay and Ungava Bay that are not within Manitoba, Ontario or Quebec" .  But does the legal definition of the boundary reach all the way to the shoreline?  And if so, does it go to the low-water mark, the high-water mark, or somewhere else within tidal variations?  Not that it can't happen (as with Delaware, and Maryland's claim to all of the Potomac River), but you'd want to look at the border-defining legal documents to make sure of that.

Though when the Hydro Quebec deal with the owners of the Churchill Falls hydroelectric generating station expires in about 25 years, that pugnacious attitude may put the provincial utility into a very tough situation financially - thanks to geography, Labrador has not been able to sell the massive amounts of power generated there to anyone except Hydro Quebec, and they buy the power on the cheap.  But when the deal is over (in about 2040), Quebec will need to pay market rates, or Labrador may find other purchasers for that power (including the U.S.) by bypassing Quebec with undersea HVDC transmission lines.

True, no tide that far north.  But the state line is defined as the mean low-water point on the VA/WV side, and even above Harper's Ferry, that can be variable.

Hey look, it's been two years since I posted in this thread the first time, and I can't add too much to it.

I can definitely add WI, TN, and NC to "driven a vehicle in" and WI to my list of states that I've been on a boat in, but that's about it.

I should get out more.

What's the difference between "ridden a moving boat in" and "been on a boat in"? My guess if you've been on a docked boat, you qualify for the latter but not the former, but are there other differences I'm missing? If not, my list is the same for both, since the only non-moving boats I've been on (the retired Queen Mary in Long Beach CA, USS Missouri in Honolulu) were in states where I also went on a moving boat: AK, HI, WA, CA, FL, NC, VA, DC, MD, DE, NJ, NY, CT, MA, MI, WI, MO, IL (all except CA, three small-boat rides in AK, and the only one in DC, were auto ferries), and in Canada YT, NT, BC, ON, QC, NB, PE, NS, NL (all auto ferries, except one of many in BC was a small-boat ride out of Tofino).

For the easiest ones:

That's how I interpreted that one.  Needed differentiation since it's very possible to be on a boat that isn't moving if it never leaves the dock/pier/anchorage (and I have 2 states where such is the case).

Though one thing I'm not sure about is whether or not to count New Jersey for the boat category, because it depends on whether or not the Staten Island Ferry crosses into NJ waters for a bit as the dotted lines on both Rand McNally and Google maps suggests it does. For now I'm not counting it.

Out of my 49, the only ones I'm unsure about are: CT (I grew up in MA...no need to spend the night there...just drive throughs :D), IA and OK.  So, 46.

I was about to say all except AK again to this one, but there are states where I was driven in a vehicle rather than where I was doing to the driving.  So, I haven't driven in AK, IA, NE, OK or SD, so 45 states.

IN, UT, CT, PA, GA, MI, KY, CO, VA, MD, IL, MO, WA, CA, NC, ID, MN, WI, HI, MA, NJ, NY, AZ, TX, OR and NV...so 26.  Not sure if I've ever flown into Cleveland (OH).  Too bad Cincy is in KY. :D

Ridden a train in

MA, CT, NY, NJ, PA, MD; UT (Heber Creeper :D); and NH (Cog Railway :D).  CA - Does BART count? :D  Anyway, 7 definites (8 including DC) :D.

Not sure if the Amtrak entered DE between New Haven, CT and Union Station, DC.  Probably did.

Ridden a moving boat in

MA (including ferries to MV and Nantucket), NY, NJ, WI, MN, WY (across Jenny Lake :D), WA (San Juan Island ferries and boat up to Stehekin on Lake Chelan), FL (one of those swamp skimmers and Dry Tortugas ferry), OH (ferry to Perry's Victory).  Oh wait, vehicle ferries, too: NC (can't believe that's it...I'm forgetting somewhere).  Also rode a steamboat somewhere that I can't remember now :D.

This should be 3. I completely forgot about the fact that my Aunt Joyce's second wedding was on a boat anchored in the Hudson River on the NJ side circa 1984. They lived in Teaneck, and the boat wasn't very far from there. I seem to remember this as a boat that specialized in these large party type gatherings like weddings and I almost want to say it was permanently anchored, but don't hold me to that.

Yeah, I remember going on a tour of USS Constitution docked in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, and I think that's the floating vessel I'd ever boarded in Maryland.
