Title: State highways that cross interstates but have no interchange.
Post by: dvferyance on July 12, 2016, 05:50:42 PM
For the most part every time a state highway crosses an interstate it has an interchange but there are a few exceptions. I know WI-71 crosses I-90 at Sparta but with no interchange same for WI-58 at Mauston. IL-23 crosses I-90 with no interchange although one is planned. IN-16 crosses I-65 with no interchange. Any other examples? I just want to focus on primary state highways so Missouri's lettered highways don't count.

I-95 with MA 27, MA 117, NH 27, NH 84, NH 88, NH 111, and NH 151

I-190 with MA 62

I-495 with MA 30, MA 108, MA 121, MA 135, and MA 225

Mass Pike (I-90) with too many to count

I think the Ohio Turnpike has some too not sure what they are though.

Also, there is notably no interchange between the turnpike and I-475 in Toledo

Because I had nothing better to do than count.....

There are 38 State Routes that cross the Ohio Turnpike (I-76/80/90) without an interchange, including State Route 11 which is a freeway. Also, State Route 10 has a partial interchange with the Turnpike.

Interestingly, all of the State Routes that cross the Turnpike west of metro Toledo have an interchange.

In CT (not including partial interchanges or crossings with exits nearby that say "TO CT XX"):

I-84: CT 188 in Middlebury (although there is an exit farther west when it recrosses)

I-91: CT 160 in Rocky Hill

I-95: CT 121 in Milford

I-395: CT 193 in Thompson (there are a couple of CT 12 crossings without marked exits, but there is an exit where it's easily accessible within a quarter mile)

I-691: CT 322 (as part of the western end connections to I-84)

Do you mean "crosses and never has an interchange somewhere else," or "may have an interchange somewhere, but crosses at some point with no interchange?"

VA-55 and I-66 are an example of the latter. I-66 crosses over 55 just west of Broad Run with no interchange, though further to the west some five or so miles the two have a short concurrency. Location of the non-interchange is here: https://goo.gl/maps/WsN7GFxLf412

(BTW, I assume that an interchange on a different road but literally right around the corner counts as close enough. VA-55 passes under I-66 again a few miles further west, but there is a partial interchange just a smidgen south of a stop sign a short distance to the east: https://goo.gl/maps/xsfmKCXYeRU2 )

VA-208 has no interchange with I-95; you have to use US-1 to connect: https://goo.gl/maps/mVZydWQmdAP2

VA-22 has none with I-64 near Shadwell: https://goo.gl/maps/ZHpDM6T3DvF2

I could probably think of some more but I need to go cook dinner.

California examples (beyond 210/83 mentioned earlier) -

I-880/Route 87 in San Jose (interchange was proposed here at one point but canceled due to limited right of way; one quadrant is a VTA light rail yard)

I-5/Route 261 in Irvine (though I-5 has a connection with the freeway that toll route Route 261 feeds into, Jamboree Road)

Since we discussed Ohio I decided to look at Indiana. US-35 crosses the turnpike near La Porte with no interchange so does IN-120 cross near Fremont with no interchange. IN-3 and IN-327 are maybes. Not sure if the end at the Michigan state line or at IN-120.

Kentucky probably shouldn't count either since it has so many numbered state highways. But, if we restrict our search to just 2di's...

I-64 has no direct interchange with:
US 25, Lexington
KY 57, Lexington
US 60, Winchester, Grayson

I-65:
US 31E, Louisville
US 60, Louisville
KY 61, Shepherdsville
US 31W, Upton, Park City
KY 88, Munfordville
KY 73, Franklin

I-71:
US 42, Hills and Dales
KY 55, Campbellsburg
KY 36, Easterday
KY 47, Sparta

I-75:
US 25, Sadieville, Lexington (three times! though they do eventually get together just shy of the city limits), East Bernstadt (twice)
KY 57, Lexington
KY 52, Richmond

I-24:
KY 95, Calvert City
KY 93, Kuttawa, Eddyville

I-275:
KY 20, Hebron
US 27, Highland Heights
KY 8, Fort Thomas

Of course, these are all pretty understandable.

I'll let others attack I-69 and the Parkways if desired.

Minnesota (two of these don't really count)

I-494/35E/MN 55 in Eagan. I think there were originally plans for an interchange but was abandoned; access is made via 494 and MN 149. I-494 has an interchange with 55 in Plymouth which is why this one barely counts.

I-35/MN 23 near Sandstone. Doesn't really count because it's just a crossover inbetween 23 having two interchanges with 35 at Exits 191 and 195.

I-494/MN 13 in Eagan. This is the true uncompromised example.

Wisconsin I know of WIS 58 crossing over I-90/94 near Mauston with no interchange and no trailblazers at the WIS 82 exit to get to 58. Probably others.

Nitpick -- "2di" refers to two-digit Interstate. A more appropriate term would be "2dKY" or "two-digit state route."

KY 52, Richmond

That's going to change. When the reconstruction of KY 52 between Lancaster and Richmond is completed, the new portion from west of Paint Lick extending eastward is going to tie into Duncannon Lane (KY four-digit mumble) and then that four-digit route will be renumbered KY 52, giving KY 52 an interchange with I-75.

What's up with the lack of an interchange between the Ohio Turnpike and OH 11?  That always seemed like a no-brainer, including for access to nearby Canfield, although the PA Turnpike is full of 'no brainers', often due to the Turnpike being there first and lack of incentive to add one.  Has there ever been plans to add one?

The one in Nebraska I know about is NE 36 and I-680, although it is easily accessible from the US 75 interchange.

Wisconsin I know of WIS 58 crossing over I-90/94 near Mauston with no interchange and no trailblazers at the WIS 82 exit to get to 58. Probably others.
There's also WIS 106 by Albion, although that is close to the US 51 and WIS 73 interchange.

Some more California examples that come to mind:

- (former) Route 160 and I-5 in the South Land Park area of Sacramento, though access to 160 was originally signed via the Meadowview Road exit.  (The new Cosumnes River Boulevard extension a few miles south actually provides even better access to what is still Route 160 through the town of Freeport)

- to some extent, unsigned Route 260/signed Route 61 and I-880 in downtown Oakland.  260 itself ends where it crosses 880, but the access to the Nimitz Freeway is through looping around several city streets after the terminus.

AL19 crosses I22 near Hamilton.

It does, however, pass just east of the maybe-AL 74 interchange (I'm not sure if AL 74 ends at AL 19 or actually extends to I-22/US 78).

AL 253 also lacks an interchange with I-22, passing about a mile west of exit 26.

In Mississippi, MS 178 crosses I-22 once without an interchange, east of Holly Springs. MS 145 also lacks an interchange with I-22, although given the grade difference and proximity to US 45 and the Natchez Trace the omission is not surprising.

The only two other examples I'm aware of in Mississippi: MS 501 crosses I-20 south of Forest without an interchange; MS 471 crosses I-20 in Brandon sans interchange as well.

Elsewhere:

AL 39 & I-20/59 in Sumter County
AL 215 & I-20/59 in Tuscaloosa
AL 251 & I-65 near Athens
AL 281 & I-20 near Heflin
AL 199 & I-85 near Tuskegee

I'm not sure if future interstates count (at least those that are very close to getting I-shields within the next year), but...

I-42 (currently signed as US-70 Bypass) and NC-111 in Goldsboro, NC.

not really.

the Turnpike is not an interstate south of Exit 6.

this is really nitpicking; Exit 11 is signed for US 9.

NJ 35
ok.

US 1&9 (remember Exit 15E really is for US 1 & 9 Truck)
again, nitpicking. see Exit 14 and the GWB approach.
