Title: anyone interested in replica highway markers?
Post by: agentsteel53 on January 19, 2009, 02:39:06 AM
If anyone wants, I can have replica highway markers run off.  State routes, US, interstates, turnpikes and other named trails, etc...

I tend to concentrate on the old styles, but I can also have modern shields made.

Just a sample of some of the signs, flat and embossed, that I have run off before in the past.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.artistjake.com%2Fsigns%2Filly1%2FIlly%25201%2520-%2520front.jpg&hash=d637f97ef82679e40f927a9ddcba3409ceb663d8)
in this photo, the California 1, the US-278, and the US-61 are replicas.

An example of the accuracy of my replicas: one is an original sign, and the other is one of mine.

Perfect for all household decorative tasks - and you can avoid the embarrassment of explaining to the nice officer just what you were doing with the ladder, the bolt cutters, the peanut butter, and the hamsters.

Being that I have five of the replicas Jake has crafted, I can wholeheartedly endorse the replicas he has to offer!

I am intersested...I am making some for Wikipedia.

you must mean just the designs, then... I can share my mockups with you if you'd like.  I have just about all the old-school US shields available and a few of the state routes as well.  I know Wikipedia has some stunningly inaccurate ones ;)  Someone really needs to go in there and fix the Arizona US 66 for example.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:US_66_(AZ_Old).svg

*shudder*

to clarify, though, I can run off the actual signs so you can put them on your wall, use them as a coaster, whatever you like!

Wow, the CA 49 one is really tempting!

Jake has had a hand in 13 of the replicas that I have, either by making or designing the signs. There is none better that I've seen. His attention to detail is remarkable. Anyone who gets a replica from him will no doubt be pleased.

WA-1 shield (1937-64) = wow

do you have a link to the design?  I thought they changed it a few times between those two years ...

http://mdo20.0catch.com/route/wa/wa5.JPG

that's 1948-64 or so.

Here's a Wikipedia recreation:

gotcha.  I don't 100% trust the Wikipedia recreations, but that one looks to be about right.  Email me (artistjake@gmail.com) and we can discuss having one run off.

just made up these designs today, per someone's request.  These are all cutouts - the sign is cut to the shield shape.  I'll be running some off in the next few months.

three styles of US shield used in Texas:  left to right: 1926-1938, 1938-1948, 1948-early 50s.  the left one is embossed, 16 1/2 by 16 inches - the other two are flat, 18 3/4 by 18 inches.

In the early 50s, Texas moved to a 21x20 shield with the full border, and sometime in the late 1950s changed over from their custom round font to the FHWA standard one.  In 1969, they went away from the cutouts to the 24x24 square shield with just the number on a white shield on a black background.

if anyone would like any number from these three styles, let me know!  artistjake@gmail.com continues to work for all inquiries :)

Did Arkansas ever use color signs? If yes, I'd love to get my "namesake" in color (I got an oversized cut-out a few years back)... or even an older AR cut-out (state xx road).

I don't think Arkansas ever used colored shields.

I got your email re: state routes.

I can make a very nice embossed ARKANSAS US 71 replica - similar to your icon, except with wider font 71.

don't have an example of 71 offhand, so here is a 17 with those digits.

new additions:

Arkansas state route shields.  Left: 1926-1948.  Right: 1948-mid 60s or so.  Arkansas US shield, available with number embossed (1926-late 30s) or screen printed (late 30s-1948).

I'll wait on the embossed 71 for now, but I'll keep it in mind  :sombrero:

sounds good :)  feel free to rip off the design for a new avatar; the 71 of the BCBA font isn't quite right!

Hmm. Would a modern day (i.e. post-2006) OK 74 shield be something you'd be interested in doing? How much are you asking to perform these services (ZOMG THERE MUST BE TEH CAPITALISMS)?

Forget that! Can he do a diamond-shaped OK shield?  ;-) Of course, my picture would be AWOL at the moment.  :-/

There's also the original Missouri shield which was an oval (and is also AWOL).

ZOMG TEH CAPITALISMZ REPRESENTINGED BY TEH CAPITALS LETTERZSES!!!23LOLCAT

About 90 bucks each for embossed shields.  More if you'd like a reflector kit or glass-bead reflective paint, less if I order in even greater quantities than the $90 price break (New Mexico US 66 for $75, for example).

For flat ones, about 100 bucks for a fully custom 18x18 or smaller shield, 140 for a 24x24.  Non-reflective or engineer grade sheeting, two colors, on either aluminum or wood.  I do get discounts for running off identical or near-identical shields, which is why I always accumulate large orders and put them in once every few months.

A standard Oklahoma may run less if the sign shop has the design, but it may be more if you would like modern High Intensity reflective sheeting.  I would have to ask.

I can do the OK State Route in flat as seen here, but not in embossed.

Embossed, I can only do US highway markers and arrows.

Here is an example of a Missouri from the 20s.  If I can find a better version of the design, with sizing information, I can do that one in flat.

If I could come up with that kind of money, I'd definitely have a Louisiana US 190 shield done, just to use for pictures.

I can be able to get a discount if I run off enough of the same shape, say 16x16 US highway shields ...

Personally, I'm wondering whether it would be easy to make a replica of the sign blade for the street that my parents' house is on; the name is just so unique that I've always wanted one. I've had the urge in the past to steal one of the sign blades, but common sense got the best of me...

probably, and likely for not all that expensive, since it's a smaller sign with a standard design ...

This thread was the longest in the General Highway Talk board which has gone the longest without a reply.  Since we're now reviving threads from 2011 en mass I figured why the hell not 2009?

And for what it's worth I do have something relevant to say.  Jake has a ton of new shields he's offering on his eBay store.  I picked up these guys as a custom order which are replicas of the earliest Bear California Spade:
