I never got to see the Red Hot in its heyday, but the odd-shaped sign's always intrigued me.

What's even more fascinating, is that it's become a curious footnote on our pre-history.

As it happens, the Red Hot name still lives. When the truck stop began serving its first hamburger steaks, amateur fossil hunters started finding fossil shark's teeth in the woods beyond the Red Hot's parking lot. Decades later, paleontologists came and unearthed fossils dating from the late Paleocene and early Eocene, or roughly 55.5 million years ago, a slice of the paleontologic timescale not available elsewhere in the southeastern United States. A prelude to our own Cenozoic era, it ushered into North America many modern-day species, and mounting evidence now indicates that it was also a time of dramatic global warming. Over the years, paleontologists continued to probe the dirt beyond the Red Hot, for which they were richly rewarded. They named their cache the Red Hot local fauna.
