Brought up in chat while discussing freeway loops.
Northern NJ is surrounded by a loop of six Interstates: 80, 287, 87, 86 (count it as future), 84, 380. What is the highest number of Interstates that are needed to form such a loop? Note that the area enclosed must not be divided by any other Interstates. You can have a spur that ends inside the area. Autoroutes, Motorways, etc. in other countries count as well.

If I can fudge around the Thousand Islands Bridge:
I-90
I-890
I-90 (again, wasn't sure if I-890 counted for "drivable by other interstates" or not)
I-481
I-81
ON 137
ON 401
A-20
A-30
A-15
I-87

A fun way to get 8: 78-287-95-195-295-95-276-476 :bigass:

9: 20-520-20-285-675-75-16-95-26

80-280-74-474-74-155-55-270-70-435-35-235 has got to be the winner, though. That's twelve.
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

NorCal:

5 between Tracy and Sacramento -> unsigned 305 between Sacramento and the Yolo Causeway -> 80 between West Sacramento and the MacArthur Maze -> 880 between Oakland and Hayward -> 238 -> 580 between Castro Valley and Altamont -> 205, total of 7

SoCal, in the future:

5 from 405 to 210 -> 210 east to San Bernardino -> 215 south to Temecula -> 15 south to 805 -> 805 south to 905 -> 905 west to 5 -> 5 north to the East Los Angeles Interchange -> 10 west to West Los Angeles -> 405 north to 5.  Total of 9.  Could get to 10 if the 710 gap is ever filled and the loop created involves it and the San Bernardino Freeway to 215.

Future one involving California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah:

80 from Cordelia to Salt Lake City -> 215 around west side of town -> 15 to Las Vegas -> future 215 on west side of town -> 15 to Devore -> 215 south -> 15 to 8 -> 8 west to 5 -> 5 north to 605 -> 605 north to 210 -> 210 west to 5 -> 5 north to Vernalis -> 580 from Vernalis to Dublin -> 680 north to Cordelia.  11 different routes

One could also add on to this, "biggest area surrounded by these interstates".

"Symbolic of his struggle against reality." - Reg, "Monty Python's Life of Brian"

What about Chicago...

355-190-290-390-294-394(ish)

I show that as 11(12).
They said take a left at the fork in the road.  I didn't think they literally meant a fork, until plain as day, there was a fork sticking out of the road at a junction.

I've got one that goes in TX, OK, and NM...

Starting in Las Cruces NM-
25, 40, 44, 240, 35, 35W (does that count?), 820, 30, 20, and 10.

EDIT: Oh, didn't realize that this was the FIRST EXAMPLE USED by the STARTER OF THIS THREAD... oh well. It was good to feel smart for a couple minutes.

EDIT 2: Was about to post the Des Moines- Illinois- St Louis- KC Loop, glad I found 11, only to find upthread that that, too, is already taken.  :-/ Man.

For Chicago, the best you can get is fudging 6. Starting at the Circle, you have 90/94-55-294-88-290. But hey, that's entirely in one county (unless you want to get nit-picky about the Tri-State being on the county line).
Davenport, IA -> Valparaiso, IN -> Ames, IA -> Orlando, FL -> Gainesville, FL -> Evansville, IN

I think the land area championship will be won out west.

Eastern Kentucky is surrounded by 75-640-40-81-77-64. Western Kentucky is corralled by 24-65-264-64-57. South central Kentucky is looped by 65-24-40-640-75-64-265. Northeastern Kentucky gets 75-64-77-70-270-71-275. Those all contain parts of other states. The only area in Kentucky completely surrounded by interstates, excepting portions of Louisville, is the so-called Golden Triangle.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

This might not win anything, but Alaska has A1-A2-A4.
