Where Have We Not Held a Roadmeet?

I have a map for all of you! I have compiled all of the roadmeet history in this thread, and I have mapped a graphical representation of it.  Perhaps we might want to fill in some of the larger gaps between past roadmeet locations as shown on the map?

Wow.  We don't like crossing the Mississippi.

A little surprising there hasn't been one in Phoenix.

The Raleigh 2022 sticker should be moved into the area of the RDU Airport in my opinion.  The place it is now (by Clayton) was not even covered by that meet.

I see a similar issue with SE Chicagoland 2022.  That should be along I-90 near IN 912 IMO.

I would move Morris County, NJ, 2020 to the Dover area by I-80.

I knew that people would comment on the nuances of where I put the pins as soon as I posted this map.  Zoom out to a broader scale, as this map was intended for viewing at a broader scale. The Raleigh meet pin is going in Raleigh. :D I had to navigate around the other THREE PINS for the same city, give me some leniency!  :D

With that said, if you have recollections of previous meets that are missing from my list, I will be happy to add in any missing listings.

Yeah, I knew I would do that.  Long Island 2023, for instance, is probably close enough, though I would move it to the NY 25/NY 110 intersection. York, PA, 2022 is possibly close enough as well though I would move it south of the city along I-83.

The main big one I have an issue with is Missing Moves because that meet was by I-76, I-295, NJ 42, and NJ 55, and was not in PA at all (unless someone crossed the Walt Whitman Bridge during it by accident).

I take issue with that statement...we crossed the Mississippi SEVERAL times during my 2017 Twin Cities meet...😁

A handful of meets I can think of offhand that aren't on Paul's map:

- Asheville, NC 2003
- Slidell, LA 2008
- Chesapeake. VA 2014 (coincidentally the day before Bethany Beach)
- We've had one other meet in Norfolk, but not remembering the year offhand.

US-71 (R.I.P) proposed one back in 2018, but it didn't get enough interest at the time.  There's a whole lot more moving parts now, and there are scores of road projects in the works coming up in the next 3-7 years mainly regarding the Springdale Northern Bypass and AR-112 with its 28 roundabouts in 26 miles along with the XNA Connector and likely Siloam Springs Bypass.  So maybe 2025-2026 would be a good time for one if you like lots of orange barrels along with the ever-present historical bridges and scenic roads that radiate from NWA.

Was there ever a Springfield (MO) one?

According to the map on the very next post, there was one back in 2018.

If we had an NWA one in 3 years time, Springfield is only a 2 hour drive away, and Buc-ee's should be built and operational by then.  Not to mention, the Springdale Northern Bypass will have the western leg completed and the XNA Connector road as well.  AR-112 will be in full upgrade still, especially north of US-412 in Tontitown.  Just about reaching the point of perpetual road construction projects with growth rate of the area.

The main pin location I'd argue is the St. Lawrence County one.  The meet was based in Potsdam mainly went north and south, not getting any further west than Canton, so Ogdensburg is well outside the area it covered.

The Springfield Buc-ee's has been up and running since early December. The Facebook links on this post shows what the contents of that two-day meet were.

As for NWA.. definitely worth a visit to look at the new projects going on there. The Golden Gate of AR at Beaver would make for a good side-trip.

No mention of the Alaska meet in 2018. The group photo (at the Arctic Circle) is here. Other details are elsewhere in that thread, though it was basically a Fairbanks-Prudhoe Bay round trip.

The Ohio Valley of KY meet 2002 should be placed at the Greenbo Lake State Park Lodge in Greenup County.

My Somerset, KY meet is missing from the list. As is my Charleston, WV meet. I can't remember the dates of them, although the Charleston meet happened the same year (IIRC) as the State College meet.

A year will be sufficient enough I think. If it isn't exactly correct that's okay. Have number, will add.

I have made a few edits to the map on a few separate occasions recently. I have also included a layer listing future roadmeets that should be hidden by default, but you can turn the layer on by checking the box in the menu on the left.  Let me know if any roadmeets are missing.  And I am not planning on being a perfectionist about where the pins sit on the map--so long as they are in the right county-ish.  Let's get the scope of the map correct first.

Mammoth Lakes appears in the wrong location. On the map it is hovering over the Big Bear area near San Bernardino.

Yeah, I am still on board stating that this one absolutely needs to be edited.

Also the Columbus, OH, meet from last year is in the right location, but says Columbus, GA, on the pin for some reason.

Thirdly, I have no idea what Baltimore 2021 was....

Have to make a trip to Bass Pro/Worlds of Wonder Museum and Buc-ee's from the sound of it!  My wife and I took a road trip just Friday to get out of the house and went across Beaver Dam, through Eureka Springs, then circled back through Beaver on the way back to Fayetteville and crossed the old suspension bridge there.  Beautiful drive this time of year with the dogwoods speckling the mountainsides before the leaves fill in.  There's no shortage of side trips around here, or around Branson.  Hopefully there's reason for a side trip to Ft. Smith for some progress on I-49 crossing the river by then, but still probably early on the spanning of the river valley with I-49 to Barling.

Looking at the meet list, there is a Nashville meet missing from 2010 that I hosted before I moved away, which focused on the I-40/Briley west side interchange construction and the remaining construction on I-840 (then TN 840).  And the 2009 Charleston, SC meet was actually in 2011, which I hosted after I moved to Columbia.

To my knowledge there has not been a meet held in Columbia, SC or in the Greenville/Spartanburg area.  Columbia has a lot of active construction and might be a worthy meet candidate after a good bit of it is finished, such as the I-20/26/126 Malfunction Junction rebuild and the I-26 widening northwest of town.  And Greenville/Spartanburg has the recently reconstructed I-85/385 interchange, and I-85 widening NE of Spartanburg that might be finishing up this year if we're lucky.

As a non-roadmeet participant, it's bewildering there hasn't been formal Phoenix and Las Vegas roadmeet(s) yet.  Also find it a bit odd there hasn't been anything for Sioux Falls and next to nothing for Western WI and especially MSP, given the density of active roadgeeks from the region.

Consider for a moment though how spread out things are on this side of the country.  I tend to only meet with one maybe two people at time historically.  Out east there is way less distance between major population centers.

I don't think anything I ever did when I lived Arizona where I met up with road people was ever branded "meet."  There were certainly similar events which included drives in the mountains or ended up at remote locales like the Vulture Mine.  All of this was under the guise of car club or driving enthusiast activities.  The only person who i interacted with the greater road hobby on the regular back then was Agent Steel.

cl94

The east has population density. Remember that roughly half of the US population lives in the eastern time zone, as well as over 60% of the Canadian population. The mountain west has relatively few people and travel distances are long. Apart from the meet I'm hosting, the closest 2024 meet is 7 hours away while still being in a state I live 15 miles from.

Now, there are a handful of mountain west meets planned or at least outlined, such as Reno this September. But these things work best with a local-ish host, something lacking in a lot of the west. We may finally have a critical mass out here to support regular western roadmeets as well as people willing to host.
