So we've been doing the route number challenge to see how high a number we can reach. This one is not just about advancing numbers but about showing what our members have collected themselves.

What you can post:
1. Your own pictures only. You must have taken the picture yourself, or have someone take the picture for you (e.g. taking pictures for you as you drive; taking a picture of you with the sign). No Street View. No pictures poached from other people's sites or Flickr accounts. You must actually own the picture.
2. Limit one picture per route per person. If you have pictures of I-10 and US-10, you can post one picture from each route. Two people can post their own pictures of I-10 per rule #1.
3. Limit three pictures per post. (Just to keep posts from becoming enormously long.) Once someone else posts a picture, you can post again.
4. The number on the sign that is photographed must be shown on a route symbol.  Signs with third-person textual mentions of routes are not allowed.

When you can post it:
5. We will advance the current number no less than every 20 hours. For example, we will advance to 2 no less than 20 hours after we start 1. The 20-hour clock starts with the first post posted for a particular number, or a post by the moderator indicating that the number has advanced.
6. After 300, we will advance the number by 5 each time. So 20 hours after 300, 301-305 will come into play.
7. After 1000, we will advance the number by 20 each time. So 20 hours after 1000, 1001-1020 will come into play.
5-7. The interval and size of advancement is at the discretion of the OP. The current schedule is:
[ul]
  • 301-1000: One number every 10 hours.
  • 1001-3000: 5 numbers every 20 hours.
  • 3001+: The number will advance with each post.
8. All numbers before the current number are "still in play," so late-comers can continue to post new routes that they collect for prior numbers. (When posting a prior number, please indicate that you are doing so to reduce confusion.)
9. If you post a picture featuring the current number and a later number, you may post the same picture again when the game advances to the later number.

Other rules:
10. Interstitial discussion posts are allowed.
11. You do not have to provide a link to your site/collection, but doing so is encouraged.
12. Former and decommissioned routes are acceptable. Older pictures of routes that have since been decommissioned are allowed. Current photos of routes that have been decommissioned but are still signed in the wild are allowed. Markers denoting historical routes (e.g. US 66) are allowed.

The goal here is for members to showcase their pictures and collections, and perhaps go take some pictures to build out their collections.

Here we go. Show us your 1s!

Wow!  This is strikingly similar to an idea I had for the next 123 challenge.  In the middle of the first game, I was considering making a new game that only allowed original posts.  This way, the people taking the photos are the ones who get credit for their own work, unlike my thread...heheh.  The only problem is, I don't think the main photographers we revere on this forum are as obsessed with everyday posting as we are.

The rules are laid out very clearly and fairly imo   Question- do suffixes matter?  (i.e. can I post a route 1A?)
We may need to regulate rampant posting of county routes, as there are like what, 5000 counties in the US?

Here's what I have to offer as tribute:

Hmm. Suffixed routes are distinct routes. But so are business and truck routes, even though they have the same number. I'm inclined to allow suffixed routes but disallow business/etc routes because they have the same posted number.

What if you collect signs and have a crap ton of early numbers sitting in your office in a pile?  :-D

Nice, I was hoping something like this would pop up! I'm going to challenge myself to take a picture of all of Waterloo's Regional Roads. I'll get a photo of RR 1 at lunch to get things started :)

Jim

I was just saying over in the thread for distances that you can't have enough far north.  So let's go to Watson Lake, Yukon.  June 13, 2001.

Photos I post are my own unless otherwise noted.

Here's two photos of Waterloo RR 1, taken today:

On the east side of Baden, just off RR 6. I like how the sign says "please drive at 50 km/h speed limit", but the speed limit sign in the background is 60 :)

EDIT August 12th: I forgot I had this picture of the exit for Brock Rd (Durham RR 1) on the 407 WB

This should be posted in that other thread in traffic control regarding the good, the bad, the interesting, and whatever the like is.

Not a bad find though!
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

Here's the northernmost 1 in North America, in Tok Junction, Alaska:

I can get north of the Arctic Circle for NT 8 and AK 11. I have a YT 5, but taken south of the Arctic Circle.

Also, for a bonus, a fugly non-Caltrans-spec CA 1 marker on a relinquished, city-maintained segment of CA 1 in Dana Point CA. While state law requires continuation signage on relinquished segments of state routes, it doesn't say the signage has to be any good.

This is from my garage at home, some bonus spades since I can't crop the pic right now.  I also have a replica US 1 Florida embossed sign but I'm not going to make it home before the  switch to 2.

No points along the bottom.

I'd guess a 2dii shield as well, and they just cut the points off.

US 1 and Florida A1A:

Forget that embossed replica I mentioned earlier, I completely forgot my wife and I had a recent Florida trip that included the signature signage in Key West.   I know that I kind of slid the rules on US 1 but it couldn't be helped with A1A on the same guide sign.  I'm all speced up for a good run on this thread until "7" which I don't have any photos or signs for.

To keep the game moving, I'm revising the time limit rule. Instead of a no-posting window, I'm implementing a 24-hour rule for each number. We will advance the current number no less than every 24 hours. The timer starts when the first picture is posted for each number.

And since 24 hours have passed since the first 1 picture, the counter advances.
