As did the flag of the Kingdom of Hawaii before it.

Hawaii post-unification started off firmly within the British sphere of influence. British military advisors helped Kamehameha the Great annex Hawaii's other kingdoms. Later, when an over-eager Brit sought to annex Hawaii, the British government reversed that action and restored Hawaii's independence. Only much later did Hawaii slide into the U.S. orbit.

Canada / Re: Quebec's Highways

Quote from: oscar on Today at 04:27:04 AM^ Yukon and NWT max out at 90km/h, and Nunavut's roads (the few it has are all locally-maintained, except in territorial parks) even less. AFAIK (haven't been there lately), in Newfoundland the speed limits tend to be 10km/h lower than for comparable highways in Quebec.

A quick check of GMSV along various rural portions of TCH-1 in Newfoundland shows 100km/h speed limits, as did NL-2 west of TCH-1 and NL-70 coming off TCH-1.  I did not check lower-level roads.

They're still the Triborough and Tappan Zee Bridges. No amount of trying to officially name the bridges after politicians will change that.

Quote from: WillWeaverRVA on April 09, 2024, 01:38:59 PMThere's no ROW there except for the power lines. There is absolutely no way you can put a freeway there.

I respectfully disagree.  Agree that there is no room there now, but
the four 230 kVA lines are carried by lattice steel pylons that date
to the 1960's or maybe 1950's, and form a "beltway" of those lines
across Montgomery County and Prince George's County.  I think it may
be possible (if the old pylons will be replaced) to move the structures
that carry the phase conductors ("wires") to both sides of the
right-of-way and put a road down the middle, where the transmission
line pylons are now. PEPCo has very recently added a new line (looks
like 230 kVA) on steel poles the edge of that same right-of-way (while
keeping the old pylons) north of Gaithersburg (which crosses I-270
between Watkins Mill Road and Middlebrook Road) which is right up
against the trees.

That might get you over to 197, but there's a large electrical substation that extends the full width (and then some) of the power line ROW near Bowie State that would impede further progress.

In a more literal sense the same argument often seems to be made for expanding I-15 from Barstow to Primm. Why should california pay for upgrading a highway that gets people out of the state to spend money. Well, my opinion is because they have an obligation to upgrade the road to keep traffic moving at acceptable levels and keep people on its roads as safe as possible whether they're residents or not.

If any body is concerned about tax dollars being wasted, perhaps they should be concerned that their tax dollars are paying for D.O.T. Employees to hijack discussions, spread narratives and other oppositions, for the most childish of reasons. Keep your toxic attitudes off of here AND the roads.

Last I checked, DOT employees were still allowed to have a sense of humor, just like other human beings. But, thank you for the reminder that there are indeed people that do not detect irony, sarcasm, lightheartedness, or nuance out there.
Agreed, but it also seems like this is a running joke that is beaten to death and it isn't really funny or needed for a thread discussing a highway expansion in North Texas. Come up with something original.

And as for the thread being locked, I would think that would be a bit of an overkill.

It is a message board, and difficult to interpret comedy. If there was any smileys used, I did not notice them.

Also I am trying to figure out any possible justifiable reasons for these absurd reactions toward Oklahoma, which Texas has highways connected to. It seems that Nay Sayers on here are worried that Texas is paying for Oklahoma's Roads. I very much doubt such things actually occur.

The dangerous situations and traffic problems in for example Interstate 35 in Texas is absolutely nothing to joke about. Seeing fatalities, or otherwise traffic congestions in areas such as the main lanes and / or the Interchange Ramps ( which includes automobiles lined up in the shoulders ) I find very difficult to laugh.

The state flag of Hawaii also includes the Union Flag in the top left corner.

From the British standpoint, with one exception, including the three elements in the flag makes eminent sense because the "United" part of the name "United Kingdom" refers to what the Brits regard as four countries—England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. (If you've flown from Europe to the USA on British Airways, you may have heard them remind Brits to put "UK" in the country field on the customs declaration form, not "England" or "Scotland," because CBP won't accept the latter.) That, in turn, raises the exception—Wales is not reflected on the flag and it's a matter of some annoyance to some Welsh folks. A common suggestion is to include the Welsh dragon at the center of the Union Flag. (I think, though I'm not certain, the practical reason why Wales isn't on there is that England had essentially conquered Wales several centuries prior to the 1707 Act of Union creating the United Kingdom.)
