there are some places that show the shield - it seems to be a municipality-based decision, as street blades tend not to be covered by the state MUTCDs. I can think of a lot of historic route 66 street blades that show the shield, for instance.
it would be a good addition to the federal MUTCD!

Some municipalities have shown a shield on street name signs for some time now, either on street name signs on signals, or on standard post-mounted signs.
The national MUTCD is way ahead of you guys, though. Section 2D.43 paragraph 2 of the 2009 MUTCD includes an option for adding route shields to street name signs. This optional variant is even assigned its own MUTCD sign code, D1-3a.

New Jersey abides heavily by this because all blades on traffic light assemblies have a shield on them if the street is designated by any kind of route.

In California, I've seen shielded street signs for Skyline Boulevard (Route 35) and I THINK Mission Street (Route 82) in Daly City.
On Cameron Kaiser's site, there's a "Route 7" street sign near today's I-710 that was recently installed:

I just saw an outline-shield street blade for 395 near its southern end in Adelanto. There's also a US-86 shield on a street blade for state route 86 in Calexico or El Centro.

I was just there this weekend and I do not believe that to be a particularly new installation. It looks to be consistent with the early 80s when the road was indeed 7.

Don't think I've seen shields on street blades in Illinois, at least not around here. Usually IDOT will put "US Rte 52" or "ILL Rte 53" on the blade and forget the street name! :banghead:
Most blades in York County, VA have "Rt. #" (or maybe it's "Rte. #", I can't remember off the top of my head) in the bottom right of the blade where many municipalities would put the block number. And I've noticed that frequently on major highways (i.e. US 17) the block number gets its own plain green sign mounted halfway down the signal pole, probably to make room for this route number text.
I've never seen a shield on a blade though.
I think it's a great idea.
This shield isn't on a street blade -- it's actually attached to the traffic light wire.

What about multiplexed highways? Where does the blade sign size start to become an issue?
Used to be a bunch of these in Lawrence, Kansas, for KS 10 and US 59.

Speaking of shields on street blades; don't know if anyone notice any of these at the Canton meet.
Summit Co. (aka Akron) would have the county pentagon on their street blades.

I think it would be cool, but I could see where there are a thousand highways multiplexed, then yeah... that would be an issue.
I can't get it on Google Street View (I'll have to see if I have a photo), but IIRC there's a double shield at the entrance to the Crazy Horse Memorial it's US 16 and US 385.
The City of Dallas, Tx just started doing this a few years ago, but only on the signal arm-mounted signs.
