I'm looking for info about the existence and route of Alt US 46 near Passiac and Garfield, NJ.

That's a new one to me, and it's more recent than Google's Street View photos: http://g.co/maps/ca5p6 (though if you go to the eastbound side and look back the sign is there with all but the 46 body-bagged). The only other bagged sign I can find is on NJ 19 southbound, and it's bagged in his photo: http://www.teresco.org/pics/berramuseum-20090523/DSCF0014-640.jpg
Perhaps it is or was some sort of temporary detour.

Seems like it would go NJ 20-I 80-NJ 19 to get around the Piaget Ave area. My guess would be reconstruction of the Hazel Ave/RR overpass, which I believe I'd heard about not too long ago.
