Saw this idea in an old thread and thought it was interesting:

In your state (or province/territory), where are the geographically extreme traffic lights? Other criteria is welcomed, but for now let's say northernmost, southernmost, easternmost, westernmost, most central, and for a challenge, highest (elevation) and lowest.

For Virginia:

Northernmost is definitely US-340 and Harpers Ferry Rd northwest of Purcellville (outskirts of Harpers Ferry WV) at 39.320 degrees: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.3198597,-77.7124795,3a,75y,248.34h,87.73t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sIMLmqv5LSq006-8D15C2dA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Southernmost is tough, but I believe it would be at Business US-29 and Mayfield Rd in Danville (36.548 degrees): https://www.google.com/maps/@36.54748,-79.4614125,3a,75y,11h,89.75t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sEZJeRRrOXlliZSEJcnSrpg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Easternmost is almost certainly this ugly assembly at Maddox Blvd and Chicken City Rd in Chincoteague (-75.362 degrees): https://www.google.com/maps/@37.9315896,-75.3613394,3a,18.4y,316.39h,93.44t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sULMWxHiybYMQduL94hPzGg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Westernmost looks to be US-58 and Chappell Rd in Jonesville (-83.126 degrees): https://www.google.com/maps/@36.6845496,-83.1259668,3a,75y,256.98h,86.05t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sSUCDsflELMIcpUu01_chtQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Virginia's most geographically central traffic light appears to be at US-460 and a shopping center entrance in Appomattox, 10.88 miles south of the Wikipedia and USGS-defined geographic center of Virginia (which itself is about 1.7 miles south of Gladstone): https://www.google.com/maps/@37.364226,-78.8453519,3a,50.3y,274.43h,87.29t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1son8368h3HbH6nfPQa05XvQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

In terms of elevation, I don't really want to go through the effort of figuring that out, but Norton's lights at around 2200 feet present a good candidate for highest. Any of the lights along the VA Beach shoreline or on Chincoteague would probably be the lowest.

Where are the geographically significant lights for your state?

Ohio

Westernmost: Pretty much any light on the IN border. Here's one at Harrison Ave and State St in Harrison.

Easternmost: US 62 on the PA border. The OH-PA border curves to the east here too.
EDIT: Apparently the Google Maps marking for the OH-PA border is incorrect here, and it's actually a straight line like the rest of the border. With that, the easternmost signal is pretty much any one on the OH-PA border, with US 62 and Addison Ave just west of the above link as an example.

Southernmost: US 52 and Burlington-Macedonia Rd in Burlington.

Northernmost: OH 7 and OH 531 in Conneaut.

Centermost: Geographic center of the state is in Memorial Park in Centerburg. Closest traffic light to that point is at OH 3 and Clayton St.

There aren't any on the Lake Erie islands?

Given that Conneaut is father north than parts of Canada, it probably doesn't matter if there are.

Indiana

Northernmost: The entrance to the Indiana Toll Road at Howe (exit 121)...

Easternmost: any traffic signal that borders with Ohio...
Ex.: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.1490416,-84.8205211,3a,75y,71.6h,90.56t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sLBZMOoho-d9o1hoFxwKLQg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Southernmost and Westernmost: in Mount Vernon on 4th Street (Indiana SR 62) at Parke Street (old Indiana SR 69)
https://www.google.com/maps/@37.9288206,-87.9086258,3a,75y,264.12h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s7mN3L-3D6TBSQQIL_F6vZA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Fixed since Mount Vernon is more western than I thought.

Washington State:

Most central: 5th and Western, Wenatchee (8.83 miles from the geographic center)
Most northern (minus border crossing signals): H St and WA-543, Blaine (~3000 feet south of the border)
Most southern: Main/B and Washougal River Rd, Camas (3.22 miles NW of most southerly point of WA, at Reed Island)
Most western: Division and N Forks, Forks (tied with an emergency signal one block north)
Most eastern (excluding this signal on the WA/ID border): 2nd / Bridge / Diagonal, Clarkston.

GaryV

Michigan:

Easternmost - has to be in Port Huron; probably Military/Huron intersection with Quay
Westernmost - Ironwood, probably US-2, but maybe there's something south of the highway in town that's a little farther west.
Northernmost - I believe it would be in Calumet on US-41.
Southernmost - This is the hardest.  Somewhere along the Ohio border near Toledo or Sylvania?  (Sylvania is a little farther south, but not as built up on the MI side of the border opposite it.)

Virginia's highest would be one of these places:

Floyd 2493'
Tazewell 2503'
Rural Retreat 2513'
Hillsville 2516'

The US 301 stoplight at the NC line is slightly further south at 36.546 degrees

if it weren't for the fact that you seem to know your stuff, i'd almost challenge you on the 'north' one... there's traffic lights in craig and steamboat...

but, i don't have the speed to check this, so again i defer to your generally well-researched stuff
clinched:
I-64, I-80, I-76 (west), *64s in hampton roads, 225,270,180 (co, wy)

Thanks for the compliment!  Wellington is farther north than almost any town in Colorado and there's nothing in Julesburg, Sedgwick, or Walden (the other ones I checked out).

That intersection is entirely in Pennsylvania. Google Maps' state line data is inaccurate when you compare against USGS topos. The state line bisects the US 62/Addison Avenue intersection, although it is a PA-maintained signal. Mercer County, PA shows the plots for the buildings are on their tax rolls.

Illinois's Southernmost has to be the Traffic Light at the north end of Cairo, at US 51/IL 3/IL 37

Northernmost and Easternmost will probably be ties, as the Northern border and much of the Eastern border is a straight line with Wisconsin and Indiana.

Since Great Lakes Roads submitted a list of images for the Indiana Westernmost with signals on the border in the Chicagoland region, I'll quote and list those for IL's Easternmost (FYI these are not Indiana's Westernmost, due to the Southwestern trajectory of the Wabash River, which extends the Southwestern tip of Indiana to the west)

Easternmost: Substitute the opening line with "Easternmost: any traffic light on the border of Indiana within the Chicagoland region..."

NEVADA

Northernmost: Winnemucca Blvd (I-80 BL) & Bridge St, Winnemucca*
Southernmost: Casino Dr & Needles Hwy, Laughlin**
Easternmost: Sandhill Blvd & I-15 North ramps, Mesquite
Westernmost: US 50 & entrance to Zephyr Cove Resort, Zephyr Cove (Lake Tahoe)

*While the other three are all within 3 miles or less to the nearest state line, the Winnemucca signal is about a 70-mile straight line distance to the northern state line.
**Less than a mile from the nearest state line, which is actually along the eastern boundary of Nevada on the Colorado River. This signal is about an 8.5-mile straight line distance to the southernmost point in Nevada.

I couldn't even fathom a guess as to what would be the state's most central traffic signal, as there's a whole lot of nothing in the middle of Nevada. The three largest populated towns closest to the geographic center or "mass" center of Nevada are Tonopah, Austin and Eureka, and none of the three have a signal. In fact, there's pretty much no signals anywhere inside the triangle formed by I-80, US 93 & US 95. The closest might be something in Fallon or Ely, which are both a long ways away from center.

Not sure that I could pinpoint extreme elevation traffic signals. But my guesses would be that the signal at highest elevation would be one of the ones on US 50 between Zephyr Cove & Stateline near Lake Tahoe, and the lowest being one of the traffic signals along Casino Dr in Laughlin.

I meant, for example, northernmost traffic light to northernmost point.

How do you guys find out? Do you just go to the extremes of your state and use GSV and look for it?

Pennsylvania:

Northernmost - US 20 at Vine St. in North East

Westernmost - US 62 at Thomas Ave. Connector in Sharon (right on PA/OH border)

Southernmost - PA 163 at I-81 north/Citicorp Dr. in State Line (right on PA/MD border)

Easternmost - US 6/209 at Price Chopper entrance in Matamoras

As for centermost, I would guess that it would be in Bellefonte, as it is the closest town to the geographical center of PA.

Illinois's centermost would have to be Downtown Lincoln.

The town of Chestnut is IL's geographic center, right in Rural Central IL. Lincoln is 11 miles away (as the crow flies - no direct roadway). Clinton is 12 miles away - crow flying or driving along IL 54/Old US 54. Pretty sure those are those closest traffic lights to Chestnut
