Title: What stadiums have you visited?
Post by: Bruce on April 24, 2019, 11:29:18 PM
I suppose we need a thread for clinching stadiums, either watching games (bonus if it's multiple teams/sports), going on tours, or just getting a peek from outside the gates.

I'll start with my list:

Attended Games

CenturyLink Field (Qwest Field), Seattle - 20+ matches for Sounders (MLS), 1 game for Seahawks, 1 match for U.S. Men's National Team (World Cup Qualification)

T-Mobile Park (as Safeco Field), Seattle - 1 game for Mariners (MLB)

Olympiastadion, Berlin - 1 match for Hertha BSC (Bundesliga)

Toured

Husky Stadium, Seattle, UW Huskies (NCAA)

Visited Gates

Banc of California Stadium, Los Angeles FC (MLS)

Mapfre Stadium, Columbus Crew SC (MLS)

BC Place Stadium, Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS)

Providence Park, Portland Timbers (MLS)

RFK Stadium, DC United (MLS)

Coamerica Park, Detroit Tigers (MLB)

Ohio Stadium, OSU Buckeyes (NCAA)

Petco Park, San Diego Padres (MLB)

Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego Chargers (NFL)

White Hart Lane, London (Tottenham)

Westfalenstadion, Dortmund (BVB)

As a marching band alum, I have been to quite a few stadiums and arenas.  Limited to venues that have had pro sports in them at one time or another:

Death Valley (Clemson)--Besides my college's home stadium, I was at the inaugural regular season opener in 1995 for the Carolina Panthers
Raymond James Stadium (Tampa)--went to the Hall of Fame Bowl (now the Outback Bowl) in 1990
Georgia Dome (Atlanta)--two Peach Bowls
Ericsson Stadium, now Bank of America (Charlotte)--two years for the NC A&T/SC State game
Gator Bowl (Jacksonville)--Two Gator Bowl games
Baltimore Memorial Stadium (Baltimore, of course)--attended the 1990 Clemson/Maryland game

College Stadiums:

Doak Campbell (Tallahassee)--Florida State games
Byrd (College Park, MD)--two Maryland games, one as a spectator and one as a band member
Scott (Charlottesville, VA)--Several UVa games
Wallace-Wade (Durham)--Several Duke games
Carter-Finley (NC State)--several NC State games, one as a spectator.  Also 2005 NCHSAA state championship
Bobby Dodd (Atlanta)--several Georgia Tech games, also practiced there in 1993 for Peach Bowl show
Williams-Brice (Coiumbia, SC)--can't have a Clemson/USC game without the full bands
Keenan (Chapel Hill, NC)--several UNC games
Groves stadium (Winston-Salem)--several Wake games

I believe this is pretty complete. Some venues will appear more than once when I've attended a particular venue for multiple types of events. Not listing various high school stadiums in Northern Virginia because I don't really remember which ones I've been to aside from my own school, although there are several because I used to go to road football, basketball, and baseball games. Also, on a lot of these venues I've been there many times (especially Verizon Center) and I couldn't possibly keep count.

NHL

University Hall (UVA men's and women's; also 1992 NCAA Women's Tournament and 1992 men's NIT games; 1995 Midnight Madness event, though I fell asleep in the stands during it!)

Minor-league baseball

Conte Forum (Boston College hockey arena that's adjacent to Alumni Stadium, went inside to get out of torrential rain during halftime of a football game in 2005!)

Pro sports, for as much as I watched, has only resulted in me attending one venue for pro sporting events.  That place is the now-gone Kingdome.  The first time was a b-day present from my best friend at the time when the Seahawks hosted the Raiders.  That friend had paid $50 for two tickets he found for sale in the paper.

Remember, this is long, long, long before the net was around!  The tickets were authentic but as events revealed, they were stolen in the mail and then resold.  We found "our" seats and had settled into the game during the 1st quarter when stadium security along with the couple who had the replacement tickets issued by the franchise came by.  WTF?  While the husband, my friend and security went off to sort out the situation, the wife and I sat as the game went along.

After a while the friend, husband and security came back.  That is when we found out about the tickets being pilfered in the mail.  Bad news.  The somewhat good news is that we were left free to wander the stadium during the game and did so on the 200 level, which is where all the nicest seats with small TV's overhead were.

For the second event, the tickets were $4 per for a baseball game between the Mariners and Twins.  This time we got that 200 level and had seats!  Seattle came in 0-6 while the Twins had a team which would win the World Series that year but I told my friend that Seattle would win.  Why?  The Big Unit was on the mound!  Even though Ken Griffey, Jr. had no hits, he did make a spectacular catch in the outfield.  Mariner bats were alive for the game so they wound up winning 7-4.  This was definitely a happier experience!

Pro venues in PDX have the unusual grouping of two basketball arenas next to each other.  The first is Memorial Coliseum and the second is Moda Center.  I have attended various events at each over the years but never seen a Blazer game in person at either.

The former Civic Stadium was home to the AAA Portland Beavers.  One baseball game was attended before that franchise went away.  In Eugene, PK Stadium, home to the Oregon Ducks, also hosted the Class A Eugene Emeralds.  They were seen there one time.

...and that is it for my visits to professional sports sites!

College: Oregon and Oregon State for football and basketball, Portland State (at Civic) for football, BYU for football and basketball, Utah for football and at a time when the university had no football, SE Louisiana in Hammond.  That place did have Hammond High playing there though.  With lightning striking a half mile north, did the Louisianans run for cover?  Of course not and the game went on!  Below the stands there were small black kids gambling with dice.  They do things in an interesting way down there...LOL!

It is not much of a record as some who have posted on this thread have but oh, the stories that go with those places!

MLB Stadiums:
Milwaukee County Stadium
Miller Park

NBA:
MECCA (Now UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena)
Bradley Center
Fiserv Forum someday

NFL:
Lambeau Field
Soldier Field pre-renovation
Both visits to NFL stadiums were as a member of the marching band in college, and we were invited to perform. Both times I never actually sat in the stands, as we were seated down on the field and performed a pregame and halftime show. The game at Lambeau was Packers vs. Bears, and we were seated on the Bears sideline. The Packers beat the Bears, and we were heckling the Bears all throughout the game. There was one play where Bears hothead linebacker Bryan Cox committed some personal foul penalty and ended up getting ejected. He walked by us as he left the field, and of course we heckled him. He flipped us the bird as he walked by.
The game at Soldier Field the Bears played the Cowboys, who were just coming off one of their Super Bowl wins. Not being a fan of either hated team, it was hard to pick a team to root for. It was an exciting game as the Bears beat the Cowboys, who were heavily favored.

College football:
Camp Randall Stadium (too many games to count as my family has season tickets)
Division III stadiums at UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater, and UW-Oshkosh

College hockey:
Kohl Center

Why not? All the original post said was "stadiums":

I suppose we need a thread for clinching stadiums, either watching games (bonus if it's multiple teams/sports), going on tours, or just getting a peek from outside the gates. ....

I suppose I could expand my list to include venues I've driven past on the highway or parked outside (the latter in the case of the Brendan Byrne Arena in New Jersey–parked there for a Springsteen concert at Giants Stadium), but trying to figure out all of those becomes complicated and confusing so I don't want to bother.

Adding NFL to mine, I've seen Dolphins games at the Orange Bowl and what was at the time called Joe Robbie.  I saw a Bills game at what was then Rich Stadium.  And an LA Raiders preseason game way back in 1985 at the LA Coliseum.  I've seen baseball games in some of the old multipurpose places that were also homes to football teams, and my high school marching band performed at the 1985 or 1986 Peach Bowl at the old Atlanta Fulton County stadium.

There's no rules about which leagues and sports to include, though listing stuff at the high school level would be a little ridiculous.

If I someday get to attend a major e-sports event, I'd definitely include it in this list. Philadelphia is getting their own Overwatch arena, so who knows how long it will take other cities to build a dedicated e-sports venue.

MLB: Metropolitan Stadium (original home of Twins), Metrodome, Wrigley Field, old Comiskey Park, Kauffman Stadium, Camden Yards, Chase Field, Miller Park

MLS: TCF Bank Stadium (Minnesota United), Children's Mercy Park (Sporting KC, also the site of the only US World Cup qualifier I attended)

Minor League baseball: Northwestern Medicine Field in Geneva, IL, home of the Kane County Cougars (although I have no idea what they called it when I went to a game there), Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium and Werner Park (Omaha Royals/Storm Chasers)

Minor league basketball: Aksarben Coliseum (Omaha Racers of the old CBA)

Minor league hockey: Allstate Arena, home of the Chicago Wolves, although they probably still called it the Rosemont Horizon then. Also the Silverstein Eye Center in Independence, MO, home of the KC Mavericks

Junior hockey: all 4 arenas the Omaha Lancers played at when I lived there, Aksarben Coliseum, Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Omaha Civic Auditorium and Ralston Arena

I have been to Soldier Field and the Kohl Center in Madison, WI for concerts (U2 and Foo Fighters, respectively), but did not see sports there.

I did a tour of Allen Field House, home of Kansas basketball, once, but didn't get to a game.

I still have not been to an NFL game.

I have been to The Ballpark in Arlington a few times when I lived in Texas.  I used to go a couple of times a year when they played the Tigers.  Since then, I have been to Comerica, Great American Ballpark, Turner Field, and Guaranteed Rate Field.  I am going to Wrigley this August.  I have also seen the Durham Bulls play live and have been to Thompson Bolling Arena to watch bull riding.  I have also been to Wings Stadium here in Kalamazoo last October to watch the K-Wings and I have taken in a Kalamazoo College football game.

MLB I have been only to Shea Stadium as I was a die hard Mets fan living in NJ.
NFL I was to a Jets Game in Giants Stadium long before the Jets left Shea, but they nonetheless had a game played there.
College Football I was to Michie Stadium in West Point.

For concerts I have been to Giants Stadium (the Dead), the now defunct IZOD Center for many different acts including Eric Clapton.    The PNC Bank Arts Center for many as well.

For Ringling Brothers Circus I have been to Madison Square Garden, as well as a Globtrotters Game.

When I attended a bowl game at Boise State, nothing was blocking field access a few hours before the game, so I wandered out onto the blue turf. An employee came over and offered to take my picture at midfield (of course I accepted). That would never happen on the East Coast!

My story's even better. I went there and all the doors were locked. I stuck my head in, got a somewhat photo, and started walking away. Then I saw a door open to the underbelly. I waited around a minute, decided not to risk it, and as I walked away I saw a guy. So I talked to him. Guy walked me through the underbelly, right out onto the field where a genuine BSU player was working out, and I got to just stand there and take photos. Yeah, that wouldn't happen here. I'd be in jail already.

Oakland A's fan here who traveled to their series in Arlington TX this past weekend.  I need to count my MLB stadiums where I've attended games and this thread seems like the right place to do it.  Using a fairly common name for each, with former parks in italics.

AL West:
A's (1):  Oakland Coliseum
Angels (1):  The Big A
Astros (1):  The Astrodome
Mariners (1):  Safeco Field
Rangers (2):  Arlington Stadium, Globe Life Park

AL Central:
Indians (1):  Municipal Stadium
Royals (1):  Kauffman Stadium
Tigers (1):  Tiger Stadium
Twins (1):  Target Field
White Sox (2):  Original Comiskey Park, the New Comiskey Park

AL East:
Blue Jays (0)
Orioles (2):  Memorial Stadium, Orioles Park at Camden Yards
Rays (1):  Tropicana Field
Red Sox (1):  Fenway Park
Yankees (0)

NL West:
Diamondbacks (1):  Chase Field*
Dodgers (1):  Dodger Stadium
Giants (2):  Candlestick Park, AT&T Park
Padres (2):  Jack Murphy Stadium, Petco Park
Rockies (1):  Coors Field

NL Central:
Brewers (2):  County Stadium, Miller Park
Cardinals (1):  Busch Stadium II (the one where the football Cardinals also played)
Cubs (1):  Wrigley Field
Pirates (2):  Three Rivers Stadium, PNC Park
Reds (2):  Riverfront Stadium, Great American Ballpark

NL East:
Braves (0)
Expos/Nationals (0)
Marlins (1):  Marlins Park
Mets (1):  Shea Stadium
Phillies (0)

*Have never seen a Diamondbacks home game; those were World Baseball Classic games during an Arizona spring training trip

So if I counted that right it's 33 total, 13 no longer being used and 20 of the 30 current ones.

College:

Title: Part 2 of "What stadiums have you visited"
Post by: Billy F 1988 on February 26, 2020, 09:37:47 PM
Continuation of Bruce's original post "What stadiums have you visited?" since it's been a while since last September of 2019. Figure I'd give you a fresh list starting with a few places I've been to.

High school football
Broncs Stadium-Henry Lavoie Field, Frenchtown High School
I've been to the 2006 State A Championship game between Frenchtown and Beaverhead County High School (Dillon). We got creamed by ONE. Stinking. Point! One. It was Frenchtown's first time making it that far in State A.

Minor league baseball
Ogren Park-Allegiance Field, Missoula
I've gone to a few Missoula Osprey baseball games between 2013 to 2015 (the team is now called the Paddleheads)

College football
Washington-Grizzly Stadium, University of Montana
2015, I think, was the only year I went to one UM football game against Sacramento State

Automotive/Auto racing
Missoula County Fairgrounds, Missoula
I went to a monster truck show in 1997 when Grave Digger came to Missoula, then, a friend of my father entered a demolition derby a year later, but got beat because his car was already busted, and went to a car show in 2016

Caras Park, Missoula (not really a stadium, but I include it in this list)
Just went last year to the River City Rod Run and I may be going there this year again

Miscellaneous
Adams Center, University of Montana
One visit to a Trace Adkins/Buddy Jewel concert in 2009 and the annual Kyi-Yo Pow-Wow Celebration in 2012

A short list:
Title: Re: What stadiums have you visited?
Post by: Takumi on July 04, 2020, 08:43:05 PM
New race tracks since my last post here.

Attended an event:
Charlotte Motor Speedway (2018, inaugural race on the Roval hybrid road course/oval track)
Virginia International Raceway (2019, IMSA GT Challenge. Was planning to go again this year before the pandemic. I absolutely love this track.)
South Boston Speedway (2003. Just forgot to put it in the first batch)

Just visiting:
Dominion Raceway (new road course south of Fredericksburg. Stopped at the Sheetz at the entrance to get food and gas, and kinda peered around at the track itself. Friend of mine has done track days there.)

I obviously won’t be adding any venues in 2020, but in the future, if my Fiero project ever gets going I’m going to be using it as a track car, and will be adding more race tracks in the future, as well as other venues.

Both the Braves and Rangers had new stadiums built in the 90's and both have already been replaced. Granted the Braves stadium was built for the 1996 Olympics but it was configured for the Braves the following season and wasn't very old. The Rangers ballpark they abandoned wasn't even 30 years old.

Looks like I'll need to revisit Arlington. I wasn't aware. The previous one didn't seem too old, and from what I've read here, it wasn't.

I just find it funny that the Rangers previous ballpark was built during the era where they were building retro classic ballparks instead of the cookie cutters from the 60's-80's and that they didn't address the issue of playing in hot weather in Texas in the summer by putting a retractable roof on the stadium that opened in 1994.

The Braves ballpark, they whined because of the location of the stadium. Not real easily accessible via Atlanta's transit system and built around a parking lot that sat on the former Fulton County Stadium site so even though it was in the center of Atlanta it wasn't the easiest ballpark to access. Now they built a new ballpark near I-75 and I-285 on the north side of Atlanta which is easier accessible but still don't see the reason to leave a fairly new ballpark.

Maybe the Tigers can get a new stadium built soon, Comerica Park is over 20 years old and I have never liked Comerica Park since day one. One reason is that it's too spread out and some of the sightlines are terrible and last but not least it replaced Tiger Stadium, the Tigers real ballpark. A newer ballpark that I think is really nice, fits in with it's surroundings nice and is an overall nice ballpark to see a baseball game in and that's Progressive Field in Cleveland. Not many bad seats at that ballpark.

The new location is even worse for transit accessibility. Mostly because Cobb County has a bunch of NIMBYs who want nothing to do with MARTA. If you’re coming from downtown, getting up there via public transit requires two bus transfers from the rail line.

The Braves did not move because of the stadium location. They moved because their stadium needed some upgrades and Atlanta city officials weren’t about to give them a bunch of money to do it (even as they funded Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the Falcons, who consistently do worse in their league than the Braves). But Cobb County was...and that’s where they went. It just so happened that the majority of season ticket holders lived in the north and northwest suburbs, which it seems was only used to justify the move after it was a done deal.

The Braves lost a huge chunk of their fan base on the south and east sides of the metro. Indeed, attendance at SunTrust/Truist is well below what it was at Turner.

Sounds similar to the Chargers leaving San Diego. The city didn't want to build a new stadium, despite the Padres, arguably worse in their league until recently, had the newer Petco Park....which I'm sure Gaslamp businesses love. Anyway....

I recall hearing that they also justified the move saying a large portion of the Chargers fan base was in the Inland Empire, OC, and LA area so away they went.

I've got only three stadiums in MLB to visit before I've visited them all.

The Braves new stadium.

Great American Ballpark in Cincy

The stadium the Nationals play at.
I've been to 2/3 of those...Nats Park and Great American

My MLB parks list isn't that long (listed earlier in the thread), but I made it a point to get all the NL Central parks clinched - Great American was the straggler for a while

Have you been to the Rangers' new digs?  I wasn't aware until this thread that they got a new one, and I don't think they had any fans there last season for the inaugural, much like where the Raiders play now.

From tv their new place looks to be sweet.  I liked the Ballpark in Arlington(what I call it) but the fact that stadium wasn't domed is why it was replaced. Ballpark in Arlington was a perfectly fine ballpark

All are attended games, except the short Gate peeks at the end

MLB: Wrigley Field, Guaranteed Rate Field, Busch Stadium III, Great American Ballpark, PNC Park, Miller Park, Nationals Park, Minute Maid Park, Oracle Park for current facilities. Busch Stadium II and Riverfront Stadium for past facilities

NBA: United Center

NHL: United Center, Enterprise Center, Madison Square Garden, Honda Center, Busch Stadium III for a Winter Classic

NFL: Soldier Field, Ford Field, FedEx Field, Bank of America Stadium, Oakland Coliseum, NRG Stadium, Broncos Stadium at Mile High

I have peaked in the gates to Comerica Park and (new) Yankee Stadium
I can now add Dodger Stadium to the list - took a quick trip out to LA a couple weeks back when the Cubbies visited (and dropped 3 of 4) against the Dodgers

I was down in Miami last month where the Marlins did have the dome closed in 90 degree heat, and the air set at about 50 degrees. It was cold in there!

I have been to (to watch a game), for baseball:

Arlington Stadium
The Ballpark in Arlington
The Astrodome
Minute Maid Park (I actually went to a game during all three of it's names)
Wrigley Field
Comiskey Park (The one that's now U.S. Cellular)
Bank One Ballpark (Chase Field)
Angels Stadium in Anaheim (Can we just call it Anaheim Stadium already?)
Dodger Stadium
Qualcom Stadium
Petco Park
Oriole Park and Camden Yards
Citizen's Bank Park
Shea Stadium
Yankee Stadium (the second one, not the current third one)
Fenway Park
RFK Stadium
PNC Park
Great American Ballpark
Oracle Park
The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum
Turner Field
Coors Field

Honorable Mention is Rogers Centre.  I watched an Argonauts game, not a Blue Jay's game

I have been to the outside of:
Progressive Field (Jacobs)
Tropicana Field
Joe Robbie Stadium (when the Marlins still played there and I don't remember which one of the 342 names it had the day I visited)
T Mobile Park
Citi Field
Current Yankee Stadium
Kaufman Stadium
Comerica Park
I watched Game 4 of the 2013 World Series through tunnel from the outside of Busch Stadium
I was inside Olympic Stadium because the Montreal Marathon ended inside the stadium.  This was 7 years after the Expos left.

I have watched NFL Games at:
Texas Stadium
AT&T Stadium
Candlestick Park
Lambeau Field
I have watched a few college games at NRG Stadium

I have been to, but outside:
Arrowhead Stadium
Soldier Field
Lucas Oil Stadium
Lincoln Financial Field
Highmark Stadium
Heinz Field
Paul Brown Stadium
Nissan Stadium
The Superdome
Century Link Field
I saw SoFi Being built
Again, went to Qualcom, The Astrodome and The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum to see the Padres, Astros and A's respectively, and in all instances the town's NFL team was still located in that town and played in that stadium.
Invesco at Mile High Stadium
Giant's Stadium
That place in Jacksonville

All are attended games, except the short Gate peeks at the end

MLB: Wrigley Field, Guaranteed Rate Field, Busch Stadium III, Great American Ballpark, PNC Park, Miller Park, Nationals Park, Minute Maid Park, Oracle Park, Dodger Stadium for current facilities. Busch Stadium II and Riverfront Stadium for past facilities

NBA: United Center

NHL: United Center, Enterprise Center, Madison Square Garden, Honda Center, Busch Stadium III for a Winter Classic

NFL: Soldier Field, Ford Field, FedEx Field, Bank of America Stadium, NRG Stadium, Broncos Stadium at Mile High, Allegiant Stadium for current facilities. Oakland Coliseum for past facilities

NASCAR: Talladega Superspeedway

I have peaked in the gates to Comerica Park and (new) Yankee Stadium
I can now add Dodger Stadium to the list - took a quick trip out to LA a couple weeks back when the Cubbies visited (and dropped 3 of 4) against the Dodgers
And now I can add Allegiant Stadium for the Raiders opener with fans. Edited my initial post also to make it current
Totally forgot to update and add Petco Park, after taking in Game 4 NLDS Dodgers/Padres last year in Sunny (actually Rainy that day) San Diego

World Baseball Classic has the brain in baseball mode

I also got a pre-opening tour of Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati prior to its opening in 1970.

Just realized I left an NCAA Stadium off the list - Memorial Stadium at UC Berkley, Calif.  Was there to see Ohio State play Cal in 2014 - and there were more OSU fans in the stands than California fans.

Due to the promotion and relegation system in place in European leagues, the number of stadiums one has visited can vary. It turns out this season I've been to one La Liga stadium (Montjuic Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, temporary home of FC Barcelona while Camp Nou is rebuilt; when I visited it was still the home of Espanyol), and there were two seasons El Alcoraz in Huesca was there.

I've also been to an ACB (Spanish top tier basketball league) arena, Pabellón Príncipe Felipe in Zaragoza (kinda dated since Felipe has been king for almost a decade now), watching a... handball match.

I have two additions to my list so far this NHL season—I went to a Seattle Kraken game at Climate Pledge Arena when I was out there for work in November (I flew out a day early partly to get the chance to go to the game) and I went to a Florida Panthers game at whatever their arena is called this year when we were down there visiting relatives in January. The Seattle arena is a very interesting structure and the two videoboards made for an interesting design concept. The concourses were kind of cramped, which reflects the overall age of the building despite the heavy renovations. The Panthers' arena had nice wide concourses and good sight lines but could use an updated scoreboard.
