Title: New York State Roads
Post by: vdeane on June 15, 2013, 12:20:17 AM
Just got my domain name set up, so I figured I'd announce the website I've been working on.  The photo gallery portion is pretty bare bones right now, but I only just coded that section a couple of days ago.  I hope to work on adding more exit lists and photos soon.

And yes, I allow image hotlinking from AA Roads (but nowhere else).

Note: I only just purchased the domain a couple of hours ago, so if the link doesn't work, just wait a while and try again, as it might not have propagated to your local DNS server yet.

Worked fine for me here and my Mozilla Firefox browser. :)

Exit 21 Southbound 95 also include Midland Avenue for Rye and Port Chester because you can access it along with I-287

I go by the main signage unless something's wrong (such as region 2's over-use of the word "to"); it's on the I-287 page but I'll add a note in the I-95 page.

I-490 Exit 19 is for Culver Road, not Avenue. :-)

I-95 and others: It's officially "Borough of The Bronx"–the article is part of the borough's name but not the county's.

For I-86, are we thinking it's officially designated to Exit 59, or is that just in anticipation? As of last weekend those signs were still covered, or at least intended to be.

Hmm, that Monroe County SIN marker looks rather familiar...  :hmmm:

Any plans for more exit lists? One road I've never seen a listing for is Robert Moses State Parkway.

Can't wait to see what else you add!

Guess I must have been stuck on "Monroe Avenue" when I typed out Culver.  Can't believe it hasn't been caught until now.

Interesting.

They were uncovered when I drove through in March.

Hope you don't mind ;) I'm gonna look into using the Wikipedia one anyways though; it matches the green of the NY and VT reference markers.

In the immediate future, the remainder of regions 2 and 3; after that, the remaining upstate interstates and regions 1, 5, and 9 (already have 4, 6, and 7 complete, not that 6 and 7 are much of an accomplishment).  If you look at the page source for the exit lists index I have as comments all the other planned ones, which I think covers all the freeways in the state (unless you count the short piece of Northway south of I-90, which I plan to add a note on I-87's and I-90's lists for the mall exit to treat it like a ramp).

That's according to the borough historian, who is a neighbor in my building.

The plot thickens...why would they have them uncovered, then covered? (Unless they were just late on their garbage bag order!)

I seem to recall something similar happening on the eastern Binghamton segment.  NYSDOT jumped the gun and put an I-86 shield on some signage on I-81, covered it up a few month later, and then applied to have the segment designated when they were tired of that.  That's how we got the segment east of Binghamton.

Maybe I should have waited on that domain name.  My desktop just died.  The motherboard is stuck at the screen that says "press del to enter setup".  It's gonna be another month before I can get another server.  Currently running a down page from my laptop, but there's gonna be nothing but a blank domain this weekend because I'll be visiting family.  I was afraid this would happen.  My desktop is eight years old and the heat it's been generating lately had me worried.  I had hoped it would last long enough to get a replacement.

EDIT: Looks like my power supply decided to get super-picky about outlets the moment my motherboard decided it hated my external hard drive.  Lovely.  Can't wait until I have a desktop that's new enough to fully understand what USB is (mine can boot from USB but classifies all USB storage as an internal hard drive, which I can only assume is the reason why it won't boot with my external attached; to boot from a flash drive, I literally have to go into BIOS and change the hard drive boot order)

I'm finally moving through my photo backlog, starting with 2007 (when I started taking digital road pictures) and moving forward.  If you see any weird formatting it means I just created a state/route and don't have any images for it yet (I didn't think the query performance cost to making it smart enough to deal with updates was worth it; you'd need to join three tables to do it).

I just updated the photo gallery code to link to a "small" version of each image instead of the full-size one, which should help people with less bandwidth.  Let me know if you want the "back" functionality I introduced there on the rest of the site.

Next exit list plans: US 9, the Taconic, and expanding to Vermont.

May be off topic, but...

I love NY 22 and NY 23. I don't know why, though.

However, they seem to get no mention on your site, despite NY 22 being relatively important, and NY 23 crossing the Hudson River.

(Note: I have not been on either, although I have crossed NY 22 on I-90, NY 23 on I-88, and MA 23 on the Mass Pike.)

I never did writeups for all the state highways, and the photos are dependent on where I've taken pictures and how interesting the signs are (I do all the guide signs for freeways, but other roads are hit and miss... I'm also less likely to have a picture of something if I travel the road so often that it feels commonplace, or if I didn't have time to take my camera out for something I didn't know about (assuming I had the camera)).  I'll probably have photos for NY 23 if I ever get on the Rip van Winkle Bridge.

Damn near ancient history by now, but: http://www.empirestateroads.com/travel/ny22/

I never did NY 23; my next endeavor would have been NY 28.

If you can make it to the NYC meet, I highly recommend traveling NY 22 on the way down or back. In fact, it's a pretty good ride almost all the way to the southern end, even south of I-84.

NY 22 is one of the longest routes in the state, but it goes mostly through the middle of nowhere, so there's not that much occasion for one to drive on it unless one deliberately makes a point to.  My NY 22 photo gallery is pretty small, despite the length of the route.  Ditto for NY 32.

Just expanded into Vermont with the I-89 and I-189 lists yesterday; currently working on I-91.  Once I get the Vermont lists up, I'll probably take a break before doing I-278.

Hello Viatologists!

I have seen the light and it is with great enthusiasm that I announce my partnership with Lord Sir Carl Rodgers The Great.  Henceforth New York State Roads is renamed to the New York Transportation Library (NYTL; same URL for ease of use).  The site will be used to analyze the transportology of roads in New York and I look forward to hosting the Corning/Elmira Viatology Convention this weekend!

I don't think I've ever met anyone else who's self-hosted a private site.  Static IP is hard to come by.

It's not actually static.  Time Warner just doesn't change DHCP addresses often.  Periodically (once every 3-4 months) I have to change the DNS settings.

Quote from: dgolub on April 30, 2014, 08:29:51 PMI don't think I've ever met anyone else who's self-hosted a private site.  Static IP is hard to come by.

With dynamic DNS Web services available, you don't really need a static IP anymore to host a website on a home LAN.  The difficulties arise mainly from ISP terms of service.  My home ISP is Cox, whose TOS for residential cable subscriptions discourage running servers.  Cox blocks port 80 (the standard Web port) in the outgoing direction, port 445 (the standard SMB port, to force you to use VPN to log in securely to your home LAN versus making your network shares visible to the public Internet), and several other standard ports for server applications, but not ports 20 or 21, so you can run a home FTP server if you like sailing close to the wind.

Personally, I have a home FTP server set up on a ten-year-old Windows XP desktop PC, since that saves hassle all around compared to Dropbox (which doesn't work well for me because I refuse to install the Dropbox program) and the file-sharing sites.  However, I boot the PC and allow the server to run only when I have made an agreement to exchange files with a specific person.  I believe I have configured it securely by not using default passwords and by leaving security-oriented defaults in place (such as a slowdown in login transactions that takes hold after more than 10 failed attempts to login), but I don't really have the time or expertise to clean up the damage a random hacker could do if he or she managed to crack security by triggering a stack overflow or the like.

There are bots that roam the Internet and catalogue FTP servers (mine has already been found by one at the University of Bochum in Germany), and I'd rather keep mine off such lists; my log already shows multiple casual attempts to hack the server by entering typical default username-password combinations.  Moreover, Cox occasionally does automated port checks on its DHCP pool and I prefer to minimize the chances their bot encounters a login prompt when it checks port 21 at my IP.

Bandwidth is another issue, since up bandwidth tends to be quite limited on residential connections.  I can typically count on 55 Mbps down but only 13 Mbps up.  I have configured the FTP server with an up limit of 500 KB/s to ensure that outsiders' downloads from the server do not interfere with my routine nightly downloads, which a controller script launches at 6.01 PM and which can easily run for six hours every fourth Monday when the once-a-month scripts are launched.  500 KB/s is a bit slow however, so I will probably lift the limit to 1 MB/s, which still leaves 5 Mbps available for other purposes.

Lucky for me, I have Verizon FiOS, which doesn't block ports.  It hasn't changed my IP in the two months I've had it, and I've read that Verizon rarely (if ever) changes them even though they're technically not static.

As I mentioned in another thread, the Windows font renderer can't deal with the Roadgeek 2005 FHWA font I used, and as such, I upgraded to Roadgeek 2014.  Unfortunately, Internet Explorer 11 can't render that font properly either, so for that browser, I had to do... something else.  you could say that I've incentivised the switch to a different browser.

I just hope the FHWA doesn't kill me.

Are you hosting alternate versions of the font on your server for Internet Explorer? If you wanted some sort of sign graphics for exit lists or whatnot, I'd be happy to help.

I don't know if alternate versions exist, since both 2005 and 2014 both glitch.  I was going to just revert to the default serif (this was already de facto happening on IE8 and earlier), but then I found out that Clearview also works fine, and that is so much more fun.  I'm currently using PHP to detect the browser and load an additional stylesheet for IE.  It works pretty well and keeps everything all-text.

Next weekend I expect to finish up the fictional Thruway AET project. The question is, where to after that? There are a few fictional things I could do (the ones on my todo list: NY 365 freeway, Québec-style numbering of NY highways, US 4 freeway, and an A-73 extension). I also wouldn't mind expanding the information section, but the question is what to add. I don't want to just duplicate something that's on another roadgeek site or wikipedia (though if the only information on an existing site is dated or incomplete, I might be willing to add it). Thoughts?

I'd like to see plans for an affordable US 219 upgrade in Cattaraugus County. Eliminate 90 degree turns and bypass population centers.

I would like to introduce my new website, New York State Roads, which hit the internets today (I sure hope the servers are Y2K compatible!).  On that site is exit lists and some information about the roads of NY as well as links to other sites; photo gallery and guestbook coming soon!  I particularly recommend checking out the NY 17 exit list; it took a while to put together.

I didn't just roll back the appearance... I also rolled back the information, to the best of my ability.  That's why I called out the NY 17 exit list... it has all the various at-grades and whatnot that have been removed as part of the I-86 conversion (took me several hours to track them down).

I didn't go so far as to roll back coding methods.  The source code betrays the site's 2012 origins, but I figure few people would check and that would take WAY too much time.  It's amazing how few CSS changes were needed to give the site the 90s feel.  All I did was change the background, font style, move the navigation, and add a couple animated GIFs.  The bulk of the work was in the info.  Shunting the site over to the 90s version only requires a change in two lines of apache config.

It's just as well, since I'm not sure that nineties-era CSS would look right in modern browsers.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to take my website offline indefinately.  My desktop was damaged in a power outage back in February and the power supply fan has been working weird ever since (it spins at the wrong rate and generates a lot of heat; it's actually safer for me to jam it with a paper clip, which is how i've been using it recently).  I had hoped that I could limp along until I can set up my next computer, but to do that, I have to wait until the release of Linux Mint 18.  Unfortunately, that is no longer possible - the problem spread to my case fan last night, and as such, I am no longer comfortable running my desktop when I am not home, and the development of Linux Mint 18 is moving at a glacial pace unprecedented in Linux Mint history, and it won't be ready for a while longer.

As such, as of later tonight, my website will be offline until the release of Linux Mint 18.  I have no alternative hosting available.  I investigated setting it up temporarily on my Windows 7 laptop, and determined that setting up a web server on the laptop is a needlessly complicated task and not feasible.  I can only hope that this issue is resolved sooner rather than later.

Linux Mint 18 finally came out, so I was able to set up my new desktop.  Smoother than normal, actually, aside from having to learn how to make the proprietary drivers/codecs play nice with secure boot.  Fewer Apache changes than with my last setup two years ago.

It's amazing how fast this computer is.  Google Maps no longer lags, for example, and Travel Mapping pages take noticeably less time to load.  Guess it's to be expected - the computer is speced for Cities: Skylines.

If anyone's curious, my new desktop is named LapisLazuli, after the Steven Universe character.

Question: does anyone actually care about the archived April Fool's Day pranks?  I'm considering removing them from the site since they do sometime result in things being archived that I later decided to standardize another way, typos, etc. (heck, the viatology ones needs to be updated periodically when things break).  I'm also considering, however, archiving part of the 1999 site under the regular theme as a "historic exit lists" feature.

I think I might have forgotten about this thread when I started my photo gallery update thread (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=26074.0) (perhaps the mods could merge it?).  I'm pleased to announce that the new gallery is done!  This week, I also further improved the photo gallery accuracy and added photos for NY 7, NY 787, I-90 (Albany), I-390, I-90/Thruway, and a missing photo for I-66 (VA) that should have been added last update.

I also made minor updates to the mobile stylesheet, updated the header and footer, updated the home page, added an RSS feed, corrected a typo on the information page, updated the I-278 and US 4 exit lists, and updated the news archive.

Part of me is wondering if I should start posting my updates here as well, in addition to the site's news page, Facebook page, and RSS feed.

This week brings a big update. In fact, between the previous updates to the photo gallery and other pages as well as the new logo now featured on the homepage and other icons, it feels like a soft relaunch. I also removed the fictional pages, as they did not fit with my vision of the site going forward.

Additionally, I added/improved citations for the Inner Loop, Niagara Scenic Parkway, NY 17/I-86, and Regions info pages; updated the MPO page; updated the I-90, Thruway, I-86/NY 17, and NY 104 exit lists.

Finally, I completed the missing photos project, adding photos for NY 52, NY 52A, NY 56, NY 72, NY 74, NY 86, NY 92, NY 97, NY 104, NY 113, NY 153, NY 173, NY 178, NY 201, NY 206, NY 252, NY 291, NY 298, NY 300, NY 342, NY 345, NY 365, NY 383, NY 414, NY 418, NY 434, NY 458, NY 812, Ford Street Bridge, Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge, Marcy-SUNY Parkway, O'Rorke Bridge, and Winton Road.

Interesting idea.  I'll keep a note of the W3C lightbox page (https://www.w3schools.com/howto/howto_js_lightbox.asp) and keep the idea in the back of my mind - it might help deal with some of the now (ever since I got dynamic titles working for the gallery) redundant header info.  Of course, not all my photos are quite as well ordered as the AARoads ones: http://nysroads.com/photos.php?route=i590&state=NY

I also added missing photos for I-676 (PA) and Tipperary Hill; updated/corrected the Inner Loop graphics; updated the Northern State Parkway, I-87, Thruway, I-287, and Garden State Parkway exit lists; and updated the links page.

Hey, vdeane, looking at your site made me think of something I notice every time I'm on the Northway that I've always wondered about and I thought maybe you might know. Specifically, heading north at Exit 7 there's that strange pull-thru BGS for I-87 North to Montreal that's shaped sort of like an upside-down "T" (for lack of a better way to describe it). Nothing wrong with the sign, and it seems like a way to save some of the cost of sheet metal, but I've always been curious why that sign is shaped like that. Do you perhaps know?

The spur designations that you list in New York, are those attested to anywhere?  It would be nice if they existed, but I don't think that they actually do.

They have, some of them, reference route designations. And they often have mile markers of their "parent" route, but to my knowledge nothing has ever officially been called a "spur" in this state.

Your website has evidently been very helpful recently here in DOT Region 8 circles. A colleague who works in my field office (former TCI turned Junior Engineer) has been doing some preliminary work on an upcoming ramp-related project on the Hutchinson River Parkway and was utilizing your site's exit listings as a means of approximating distances between exits and around the service station near the North Street exit (probably for forthcoming WZTC purposes). Our work has real-life applications outside of this community and it's always neat to see professionals in my field utilizing our research & websites to their benefit. Keep up the good work!

Yes! That happens from time to time–information from my own site also made it into some NYSDOT materials about reference markers once. (Fortunately my info was itself derived from earlier NYSDOT publications.) And I know it's happened to others as well. Good to know what we do isn't entirely useless! :-)

Nice!

I remember a presentation in the Highway Data Services conference on references for research and "roadgeek websites" was one of the items (and the head of the unit at the time was aware of mine).  I also have a binder on the local reference routes in Region 1 and the first couple pages are a printout of the Empire State Roads page listing the Region 1 reference routes!

You should expand out of NY and do they neighboring states of NY such as CT,NJ,PA,MA, and VT, or make them separate websites.

There's actually a bit more VT on my site than you'd think; I got inspired to do the exit lists after the Burlington meet, and the Burlington meet page has some stuff there too.  I also have the breakdown of VT's reference markers on that page along with NY's and Monroe County's mainly because I knew I'd forget how they work if I didn't put that information somewhere.

Pennsylvania is actually covered on another site called Pennsylvania Highways (https://www.pahighways.com/).  There's a fair amount of info on NJ, CT, and MA on Steve Anderson's sites:
